Last Friday night I was at Shooters in Wichita, KS watching a 9-ball match
between Junior Brown and Mark Rogers...I was told that both are top notch
players and that Junior used to be (he's about 47 now) one of the top
hustlers in the south. I was also told that he is mentioned in a book
called "the green felt jungle" or something like that. Just wondering if
anyone out there has heard of him. He embarrassed Mark a little bit with
sets of 6/2, 6/0, 6/0, 6/3, and an exciting 6/5 final match. Mark's backer
(they were calling him "Fat Man") stopped the bankroll after that last set
and Mark and Junior resorted to a set of 9 ball banks. I'm not exactly sure
what the 9-ball sets were worth, but I heard $150 ea...so Junior did pretty
well. He was really on, only missing one shot that he could have made in 5
sets. Great safety play, excellent cue control, and a big, big break.
They kicked us all out when the place closed at 2, and the money changed
hands in the parking lot. I think I saw 7 Franklins at least leave the "Fat
Man"'s pocket. Junior was pleased.

Yep, he plays REALLY well. We've seen him around the OKC area plenty over
the years although it seems like it's been awhile. Back in about 91 or 92
he dogged a hill-hill 9-ball in one of your Southwest Tour stops in Norman
against Fat Ralph that cost me $50.00. Might be the only ball I've ever
seen him miss... funny how ya never forget those, eh?

Junior is probably the best bar table 9 ball player I have ever seen wearing
cowboy boots. Wichita loves to back him and he is good action. I have
never really seen Junior "hustle", he is usually matched up against a top
player, playing hard to win a tough game.

Junior (Cliff) Brown and Mark Rogers are two of the best players around
(regardless of game format) and have been for many years. It is a great
feeling to know both of them personally. Having played against both of them
in league and in local tournaments (and usually holding my own against them,
not winning mind you) I have much respect for both of them as well as many
others in Wichita. I've heard that Wichita has the most top pool players
per capita than anywhere in the country, but I can't substantiate that.
Junior showed up recently at Side Pockets in Wichita for the weekly Saturday
night 8 ball tournament and took third (thanks to Bob Jewett and his ideas
for the handicapping format). Mark Rogers has also played in this
tournament a few times as have Jeremy Vulgamore, Scott Fraser and many of
the top players from the area.

Jr. Brown spent a lot of time in the New Orleans area. That is why he is
mentioned in the book "Green Felt Jungle", webm...@thegreenfeltjungle.com.
It was written by Gerald Huber "Humphrey" that still resides in New Orleans.
According to people in the NO area that I know, Jr only booked one loser the
entire time he was there, to Reed Pierce, former US Open winner. Not bad
company.
