Joe Tucker - teacher, author, and pool player - showed this weekend
that you can't forget he's one of New England's top pros. As Mike
Zuglan's Joss Northeast 9-Ball tour came to Scooter's for its largest
added event of the season, 59 players showed up to compete for almost
$15,000 in prize money.
This three-day event was a first for the tour. Friday night was the
players' auction and the first round. The excitement started right
off. Frankie Hernandez and Billy Lana went hill-hill with Lana
sneaking out a victory after Hernandez missed a carom on the 5 ball.
In another great match, John Fernandes held on to beat Mike Zuglan 9-7
after jumping out to an early 6-1 lead.
After presenting the main tournament sponsors (Joshua Teeter and Buffy
Friedman) gifts for their generosity, Saturday started with some great
matches right out of the gate - George San Souci bested Tony Robles
9-7 and then beat veteran Joe Frady. Chuck Altomare overcame a 2-6
deficit to beat Bobby Hunt on the hill, then fell to San Souci.
Tour newcomer Paul Rota beat women's pro-tour player Nicole Mancini,
then beat Norm Pincence, and then upset Nelson Oliviera before going
against Joe Tucker and losing 9-8. Young Billy "the kid" Lana beat
all his opponents on Saturday, as did Steve Lipsky from New York City.
At the end of Saturday four were left undefeated - Ginky vs. Tucker
and Lana vs. Lipsky. On the one loss side were Bob Madenjian vs. Matt
Tetreault, Danny Basovich vs. Chris Uhlman, Rick Matarazzo vs. Chuck
Altomare, and Frankie Hernandez vs. Paul Rota.
Joe Tucker, author of the popular book "Racking Secrets" as well as
two other books met up with George San Souci in Sunday's first feature
match. Tucker came out firing at the heavy favorite, and did just
about everything right in winning 9-5. Steve Lipsky could not stand up
to Billy Lana and Billy cruised to and easy 9-5 win.
On the one loss side Rick Matarazzo beat Nelson Oliviera and then
completely dominated four-time Joss event winner Chuck Altomare 9-4.
Unfortunately for Rick, his next opponent was Frankie Hernandez.
After losing his first match, Frankie tore through the one-loss side
defeating Ryan McCreesh, Tony Robles, TJ LaFlamme, and five others to
setup a match with Ginky.
Hernandez, known for his great break, started out slow against San
Souci and fell behind 3-1 before coming to life with good offense and
outstanding safety play. In the end, Frankie beat San Souci 9-7,
sending Ginky home with fourth place. Tucker beat Lana to get in the
electric chair and then Lana beat Hernandez on the one-loss side,
setting up Lana vs. Tucker for the title of this great event.
These two Rhode Island guys have matched up many times before, and the
final match was as exciting as everyone hoped. The match was close all
the way to hill-hill, when Tucker edged out Billy to claim the big
prize. What a great turnout and great event. Over 100 spectators
watched and two cues (a beautiful Joss and a really gorgeous Mike Webb
"Jump Break Extender"). After all was said and done Joshua Teeter
said that $1000 was raised for the LAM foundation as a result of this
tournament.
Thank You all.

Finally, and yes, I had to get this in....to Joe Tucker.....I TOLD YOU YOU WERE
GOING TO WIN THE EVENT!
A big thanks to the Teeters and Pat Murray.
stik
Stik,
Pat and Joshua and the rest of his staff did a great job! Even the "Pro Dogs"
were excellent! This was a great tournament. I am glad that the local, Joss
Tour regulars were the ones that cashed. This was the most generous purse I
could remeber since probably Mike X's Eastern States events.
If we could figure out a way that we could get pursses in that amount every
tournament, these guys could do ok.
As a roomowner, from an ego standpoint you like to have the "big names", but
when you think about it, all they would have done is taken the money out of the
area. Pat gave up a Friday, Sat & Sun from his room receipts (a big hidden cost
when holding an event and another reason why no one should have a problem with
a roomowner taking a green fee), he and his staff worked many extra hours, and
he did not charge admission. It was great that he received the support of the
"regional" players. Take a look at the chart (www.roadplayer.com). The majority
of the players play in the pro events anyway!
As far as Joe Tucker goes, I have no doubt that because he knows how to read
the rack he was able to win! Check out "Racking Secrets" www.allaboutpool.com
It costs just $10!
