You should feel dirty -- you scammed a cue from Pechauer after all.
Great story Hank.
I'm watching the state finals in Wheeling WV circa 1983 and Willie is
there to do an exhibition and referree the finals. Well it's getting past
Willie bedtime because the tournament is dragging along and so he offers
to let all comers take him on in 9 ball (it was a 9ball tourney) for $10
-- money to go to charity (the Willie pension fund?).
So I pays my money, and break (everyone gets spotted the break). I make
the 7 ball but have no shot on the one so I play Willie safe! You would
have thought I did the unthinkable -- Willie makes a big show of me
playing HIM safe. And just to teach me a lesson he safes me back putting
whitey behind about 5 balls. I'm literally surrounded by object balls.
BUT I'd been jumping balls for years then and he didn't leave me against
anything so I pop over the interfering balls and make a good hit on the
one. Naturally it stopped where Willie could get a shot, and he starts
knocking balls in. Well I had my moment of fame and I'm happy just to
watch him run them -- but he jaws the 6 ball on the new felt and I'm back
up. I make the 6 but miss my angle for the 8 a little and when shoot it
the cue ball rolls toward the middle of the table. The nine is about 2
inches off the head rail so I grab the rake. Lay the cue on it an slow
roll the bank into the opposite corner. As it's rolling there, Willie's
exclaiming, "it's gonna go, it's gonna go!" And it did. Never been
happier in my pool life than that one moment.
I posted a link to the picture last week but since you know the nature of
my sh$t-eating grin now, I'll post it again.

The guy that owns the local pool hall here (and won that table as part of
the prize for the tourney) beat Willie by breaking and running out.
Willie intentionally (obvious to everyone, including his opponent) dogged
the 8 ball against his only female challenger. She was so pissed that she
missed her shape by 3 feet (it was a dink-dink out) and had a razor cut
along the rail on the nine to beat him. She made the shot (a damn nice
shot I'll add) and won her game. I think many of us wondered
(marvelled) at her attitude. We all saw it as Willie being a gentleman
and letting her win -- but she was a competitor and saw it as insulting.
I wonder what she thinks now...
Those were the only 3 wins that night against the champ.
--> Mark0 <-- and now you know the REST OF THE STORY (apologies to the great
