I know everyone is raving about the Sledgehammer by Mike Gulyassy
right now, but has anyone tried the Mace jump/break by Rich Howard?
How do the two compare?

They both make a very fine jump/break cue, but I personally think the
sledgehammer is a lot better due to the phenolic tip. Rick'c cues cost
quite a bit less though and they use a leather tip, which is good or bad
depending on how you view that sort of thing.

FYI - In the course of doing research for the new "Blue Book of Pool
Cues", I learned that Rick Howard no longer makes the Mace. He sold
Mace Custom Cues to an Asian company, and now is making cues under the
name "Rick Howard Custom Cues".

I was in Rick Howard's shop 10 years ago and saw a jump cue or two
with phenolic tips. Eddie Pruitt was also using one-peice phenolic
tips on his Eddie's 747 about 10-11-12 years ago out in Los Angeles.

Rick Howard has NOT sold Mace Cues and still markets and sells them.

Just spoke to Rick Howard - apparently I received incorrect information. Rick
is still making Mace cues and has not sold the company. He also is continuing
to make some custom cues, which are signed R. Howard, in the $1000-3000 price
range. My apologies to all for passing on this erroneous info. My only excuse
is that I had tried to reach Rick (unsuccessfully), and have been up to my
eyeballs trying to update 250 listings plus adding 100 or so new listings and
taking 800 + cue photos for the new book.

Umm, that does not speak well for the potential accuracy of the book.
I would hope that, especially for a reference work, the factual
content would be verified from primary sources wherever they still
exist. I hope the rush to deadline does not compromise the book's
reliability.

The latest issue of one of the two Pool mags (I forget which) said
March, 2004. Is that the plan?
