Sometimes you just get lucky. I'd bet he'd miss it next time. :-)

I think the hardest part of shots like this isn't making them It's
not looking surprised when it goes in.

PatH...surprised any shot goes in

I agree Pat. Maintaining that " I meant to do that" look takes many
years of practice.

Another possibility for this shot is to play the cue ball off of the
pocket facing on the long rail. This is also a low percentage shot,
but it is better than the three rail shot as the object ball is
moved farther from the other corner pocket. It depends also on the
table characteristics which is actually the better shot to take, but
there is another reasonable alternative to consider in this
situation.

When your opponent says "What luck!", say "It is not luck", then try
to keep a serious face...

I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean bank the ball off the area of

I think that is what he means. I've tried that shot once or twice
but never successfully and it's certainly not a shot I would bother to
practice.

Pat...tries to play better shape.

Watch a marvelously creative use of the doubling-the-corner-pocket-
points technique with a near-miraculous successful kick at the one-
ball out of a lock-up safety. We can readily forgive Grady
exclaiming, in the moment’s great excitement: “That may be the single
greatest shot in pocket billiards I’ve ever seen.” No doubt he’s seen
hundreds. I can say you *will* definitely enjoy this one by
Davenport:

Player: Kim Davenport
Event: 1989 Coors Valley Forge 9-Ball Classic
Date: Dec. 17, 1989

For jaw-dropping surprise, it doesn’t get any better than Kim
Davenport’s doubling of the corner-pocket points in the final of the
1989 Coors Valley Forge 9-Ball Classic in King of Prussia, Pa.

Here’s the link:

Btw, be sure to view some or all of the of the other 19 wonderful
shots listed month-by-month immediately below the video and
descriptive text about Davenport’s terrific doubling the points shot.

I have both won games by making that shot and lost games when my
opponent made that shot. It is an oddball kind of shot, but it is
one that pretty much every pool player knows. As far as practicing,
I don't think a player should spend hours trying to perfect it, but
it is a good shot to know at least well enough to be able to assess
when to take it and when to play something else. With the right
speed, for example, you can get a pretty good safety after some
misses, so you should at least practice it enough to be able to
judge the right shot speed. And if the object ball is near the
center of the cushion, then you can't shoot the 3-rail shot because
the side pocket is in the way, so what else are you going to try?
