I'd like to say that the competition was pretty powerful. I played in the
Houston Open, which was a really big tournament with some top pro players
there, and I didn't do any better in this tournament than i did in the
Houston tournament. My matches were close, so that was kind of
disappointing, i lost my first match 11-9, won the next one 11-2, and lost
my 2nd time 11-8. It was my first time there, so i'm not disappointed, and
I had a lot of fun. I have to say i was most impressed by some of the girl
players and the young players, especially the girls champion Sarah Rousey,
who is about 5' 100 pounds and breaks like Earl, and 12 year old Justin
Berkman, who i saw literally running around the table running racks, lol.
Anyway, it was a good experience and i'll be back next year.

2000 National Junior 9-Ball Championships

McMinn Captures Third National Title

The talk all week at Magoo's Billiards, host site in Tulsa, Oklahoma, of
the 2000 Billiard Congress of America National Junior 9-Ball Championships,
August 3-5, centered on whether Tulsa's own Shane McMinn could join Kara
Wroldson ('93-'95) as the only players to have won three national junior
titles. McMinn (aged 16) - the 1998 National 14 & Under Open titlist, 1999
National 18 & Under Open titlist, and 3rd in the 1999 WPA Junior World
9-Ball Championships in Alicante, Spain - was the prohibitive favorite in
the 18 & Under Open division; but the pressure to repeat in front of a home
crowd can be daunting, and Shane had his moments during this year's
Championships when his hold on the crown was tenuous.

McMinn started strongly enough with an 11-0 whitewash of 15-year old Chris
Wilson (Ft. Collins, CO), but he escaped with a win in the next round when
16-year old Ruztin Cortes (Daly City, CA) missed an awkward 3-ball with the
score tied at 10-10. McMinn marched onward undefeated with further wins
over Ryan Ziegler (aged 15 - Washington, PA) 11-1, Jason Cruz (aged 17 -
Guaynabo, PUERTO RICO) 11-8, Bobby Dickerson (aged 18 - Terre Haute, IN)
11-0 and Brandon Sluzalis (aged 18 - Redding, PA) 11-5 to capture the
winners bracket. McMinn's challenge in the tourney finals came from
Brandon Sluzalis, who took 4th place in the 1999 event and was gunning for
the title outright in his final year of eligibility. To reach the title
match, Sluzalis outshot Jamie McWhorter (aged 18 - Wellson, OH) 11-2,
Collin Hennen (aged 16 - Washington, PA) 11-8, Jesse Melton (aged 15 -
Owasso, OK) 11-3 and 1999 runner-up Neal Jacobs (aged 18 - Northbrook, IL)
11-7 before a setback to McMinn 5-11. Brandon recovered in the loser's
bracket finals to relegate Jason Cruz to 3rd place 11-5 and get another
shot at McMinn in the title match. Sluzalis showed great form in set #1 by
handing Shane McMinn his first loss of the tournament, 11-6, but McMinn
gained some early momentum in the deciding set and coasted home after
Sluzalis crept to within one game at 6-5 to claim his third straight
national crown by an 11-8 tally.

While much attention was centered on McMinn and his title quest, action was
just as furious in the 18 & Under Girls and 14 & Under Open divisions,
proving that the future of USA cue sports in both skill and sportsmanship
are indeed in good hands. In the 18 & Under Girls division, 17-year old
Sarah Rousey from Bloomington, Illinois was trying to finally wrest the
title after years of struggling to two 2nd-place and two 3rd-place
finishes. Being the prohibitive favorite in this year's Championships, she
also felt the same pressures as McMinn. Rousey began with an authoritative
9-3 decision over 1998 National Girls Champion, Jana Arnold (aged 17 -
Texarkana, AR). She followed up with wins over Mary Rakin (aged 12 - Daly
City, CA) 9-2, Megan Hyke (aged 13 - Stewartville, MN) 9-1 and Michelle
Rakin (aged 16 - Daly City, CA) 9-7 to claim the winner's bracket. Her
opponent in the finals proved to be Michelle Rakin who, previous to her
loss to Rousey, upended Danielle Shipman (aged 15 - Dunaweg, MO) 9-5,
Regina Rakin (aged 13 - Daly City, CA) 9-2, Michelle McDermott (aged 16 -
Tulsa, OK). In the loser's bracket finals Michelle clipped Melissa Morris
(aged 16 - Desert Hot Springs, CA) 9-8 to gain another shot at Rousey.
Sarah Rousey was determined to claim her first title, and she controlled
the final set well enough to claim a 9-7 decision for the crown over Rakin!

The 14 & Under Open division evolved into an all-Oklahoma affair with Tyler
Strawn (aged 13 - Oklahoma City, OK) facing off against Joey Gray (aged 13
- Bethany, OK) in the finals. Strawn took the indefeated route by
eclipsing Isham Overby (aged 14 - Prague, OK) 9-7, Daniel Rakin (aged 11 -
Daly City, CA) 9-3, Joey Gray 9-6, Shannon Murphy (aged 14 - Lawrenceburgh,
IN) 9-2 and 1999 National Runner-up Justin Bergman (aged 12 - Fairview
Heights, IL) 9-4. Prior to his loss to Strawn, Joey Gray closed out Rocky
Pfisterer (aged 14 - Masillon, OH) 9-5, Rick Weir (aged 14 - Palatine, IL)
9-5 and Justin Hall (aged 12 - Hamel, IL) 9-4. Gray recovered in the
loser's bracket to eliminate Jonathan Fasking (aged 14 - Tulsa, OK) 9-2,
Rick Weir 9-7, Joe Kraft (aged 13 - Marshallville, OH), Shannon Murphy 9-7
and Justin Bergman 9-4 in the "B-side" finals. In the Championship finals
Strawn closed out Gray by the identical 9-6 margin as their earlier bout to
claim his first national crown.

The 2000 National Junior Artistic Pool Championships, conducted by Tom "Dr.
Cue" Rossman, produced all-new Champions. Daly City, California's Mary
Rakin outpointed Sarah Rousey for the 18 & Under Girls crown; Tyler Strawn
added to his hardware collection in the 14 & Under Open division by
clipping Lawrenceburg, Indiana's Shannon Murphy for the title; and Colorado
Springs, Colorado's Nathan Smith captured the 18 & Under Open division
title over Newark, Delaware's Matt Krah.

These Championships determine most of the North American entries for the
WPA Junior World 9-Ball Championships each year, and this event qualified
Shane McMinn, Sarah Rousey and Tyler Strawn as the nucleus for the 2001
squad competing in Quebec City, Quebec, CANADA. Scores of industry
companies - too many to list here - generously contributed over $40,000 in
billiard-related products to the 135 entries, which when added to the
$18,000 (courtesy of the Billiard Education Foundation)in college
scholarships awarded brought the total value in prizes to over $60,000!

Scheduling and sanctioning for qualifying tournaments (to be held between
April and June, 2001) and junior leagues will be solicited in the upcoming
months. Interested rooms and league operators may contact Bill Meacham at
the BCA at 719-264-8300 or <bill-m...@bca-pool.com> for information on
qualifying players for the 2001 Championships.

I agree completely with Todd. Most people dont realize how powerful
some kids are. I was really impressed with the 14 and under division,
those kids can play. The 18 and under boys was definitely some future
professionals. The girls, well, there was talent, just not strong like
the boys. All in all, i recommend this tournament to everyone under
18, its alot of fun and great experience.

Sarah Rousey
