Hi everyone,

We just received our new pool table, so time to start learning!

I want to protect our table from the cats! They can hop up there, and I'm
worried they will tear the felt up, even if there is a soft cover.

Does any company offer a hard cover for pool tables? Or are there
alternatives to a hard cover?

Thanks for the help!
- Adrian

(PS: Ok.. not "get rid of the cats" jokes.) :)

Ask your vet. There is a spray he gave us that I spray on the outside of
the wood rails and the cats won't cross that boundary. I suppose I could
spray it on the cloth, but if I had to screw with the playing surface, the
cats would be gone.

BTW, my cats each have their own spectator chair and will sit and watch
balls moving and disappearing into the pockets for hours. When the older
cat was young he used to chase the balls as they went into the pockets.

I spent a day or two with a water pistol gun protecting the table, cats
are on Deno's side, and respect only those people that come armed and
ready to shoot. After a week, they will generally see the error of
their ways, and you should have no problem.

Donald <-- evry pool table owner needs to arm themselves

PS. If you buy one of those gardening squirter thingies instead of a
water pistol, the spray nozzle can be adjusted to a stream, and the
reservoir is much larger. After the training is over, you can reset it
to a fine spray, and use it on an indoor garden.

Mine climb up to the ceiling pipes, cross over to above the table, then
jump down onto the top of the table lights to watch. They go back the
same way, as they know that jumping down onto the table will result in
the stew pot being brought out.

Cats don't like garlic and I've heard they also detest citrus/orange.
Which could be correct because I alway try to feed the neighbours cats
with
foam from my beer (Orval) which has stron orange-peel scent.

Now rubbing the wood with garlic doesn't sound that bright but citrus
would
be even a nice air refresher.

You could also divert them to a corner by placing some catnip... but I'm
not sure how other cats in your surroundings will react to that ;)

Get a fitted nauguahyde (sp?) cover - there are lots out there. I
think Muellers has them for example. The cat would have to be a
mountain lion to scratch through one of them. It's also impervious to
liquids which is useful when my boozing buddies come over...

I have a four piece fitted insert that fills up the cloth playing area.

They are made from styrafoam inside, covered by naughide.

The four pieces are easy to take out and store under the table in a stack.

Also, when they are in, they make the pool table into a nice large table for
working. (The resulting table surface is 1/4" above the rails)

When an overall naughide cover is added then it can double as a waterproof
surface (i.e. buffet table or extended eating table).

My kids like to put them in and use the surface as a play area. I put my
table tennis top on top when I want to play TT a bit.

They are made for pool tables can be purchased for 7, 8 or 9 foot tables.

Go buy one of those vinyl table covers and 4 X 8 sheet of insulation sheet
at Mennards/Home Depot. The insulation sheet is very light and comes in 1"
to at least 4" thick. Glue the cover onto the insulation sheet with 3M
spray cement.

If you need a piece bigger than 4x8 then buy a second piece and cut stripes
to glue on to the full size board. Glue the edges on and then drive 1/8 to
1/4 glue covered wooden dowels in from the side to reinforce the
connection.

Cheers,
Jim

Adrian,
I use a padded cover by Fabricon (they advertise in BD, or I can
get you info) that is cat proof. Also, if you go to www.aerostitch.com
you will find a really great, effective, cat deterrent that is imported
from Japan, where there are a lot of cats. It is completely safe and
natural, but cats for some reason don't like it.

Tony---> has 2 cats and 1 table.

Here in the Land of the Free we frown upon shooting our pets...even with
water. I suggest a sachet with cat repellent on your cover.

Is it considered violent if you cook them with rice? The young ones are the
most tender.

Or search for "cat repellent" using their "search" link if the above doesn't
get you there.

Cover? You have a pool table and you cover it up? How do you play on it?

Donald <-- thinks "helpless ktten" is an oxymoron, like "helpless women".

Well they might need to be a mtn. lion to SCRATCH thru it but my little
alley cat had no problem ay all CHEWING his way thru it! Lucky for him he
only ate at the corners. I am still on my first cover (4 years) and the
corners are the only thing he has attacked. I cover the table every time it
is not being used even if it is only for dinner and we are going to play
some more. You can never tell when a cat might jump up on it. And if he did
and there was no cover on it...................somebody has mentioned cat
stew!

I am wondering the same thing. We would like to buy one but have 4 rescue kitties. They really have access to everything in the house and there is no way to keep them off of a pool table. Did you figure anything out that is effective to prevent damage, etc.? Thank you, Kat
