Must be nice to have a durometer - care to brag some more.. :(

Could you let me know what equipment you used.
We manufacture laminated cue tips and I would be interested to send you some
to test. I am also interested to see your answer to Paul's post regarding
whether or not the testing damaged the tips. If you send me your address
I'll send you some of our Talisman PRO range and also some of our new tip
the Talisman WB which we are just about to launch.
TIA

Durometers are kinds of harness testers. They are specifically designed to test
the harndess of FLEXIBLE materials. There are many other types out there, but
this type is the one you want.
How they work is a probe in penetrated into the substance being tested. At some
point the probe stops. Basically, the measurements are a reflection of the
encountered resistance (amount of probe depth).
Do they damage the tip? No. The probe usually penetrates around .005" IF YOU
ARE USING THE CORRECT SHORE SCALE.
Basically, a shore scale is the point shape of the penetration shaft. Two
scales you will encounter will be shore scales A & D. Shore scale A is the one
you want. The A scale has a 35* blunt nose. The D scale has a sharp 30* point
nose.
Shore scale A is what you want to use. It can cost you between $500 and $2500+
depending on what way you want to go. The $500 unit should be adequate.
When searching through a catalog, sometimes durometers are not listed in the
index. However, most of the time they can be found with the hardness testers.
Hope this Freds, err I mean helps.
