Anyone;

I've heard that in many tournaments nowsdays.
Particularly in televized 9-Ball tournaments/matches,
the balls are racked with the 9-Ball on the foot
spot vice placing the 1-Ball on the foot spot.

Can anyone verify this or does anyone have comment
on this or can anyone point me in the right direction
to obtain more information on this?

I think the balls may have been racked in this manner
during the Mosconi Cup games in London that were
televised this last Sunday. I noticed that they were
making more balls than usual on the breaks but I
could not tell about the rack placement and, far as
I know, the announcers did not bring up the subject.

Happy New Year & Thanks !!

I'm not sure about the origin, but the UPA tour (www.upatour.org) requires the 9 racked on the spot and also imposing breaking areas for the cue ball.  You must break inside a box between the first diamond from each side of the table (still behind the head string, of course).  In other words, no breaking from the "rails".  I'm just getting back into 9 ball and desire to play at a high level.  The UPA tour in Ft Lauderdale was my first tournament in 8 years.  I was explained this the night before the tourny at the "play around" ...  The reasoning was to try at prevent the "wing" balls from going as often.  Same with the break changes.  I do not believe the Mosconi was played this way??  Not sure, but I noticed a LOT of wing balls going straight into the corner pockets.  ????

Thanks, Duane, for your response.
I'll look forward to hearing fm. others on
this subject.....
I've tried the 9-Ball on the spot breaks lately
and there's no question about more balls being
made on breaks and signficantly greater spreads
after the breaks............

I too, was watching the Mosconi Cup and trying to learn the 'cut break' which the pros use to make the 1ball. After looking at it, the 9ball was on the foot spot when racked.

I regularly play on 'bar boxes'. I have a 7ft Diamond at home. I do not regularly play on big track tables. So I went looking for answers where the foot spot is located on a 9fter. Like 7ftrs, it is centered on the second diamond from the foot rail.

Obviously, racking a little forward (9 on the foot spot) allows for better ball making and spread. One rule a the Mosconi provides that 3 balls must either be pocketed or cross the head string on the break to be legal...
