I can't seem to get any further than the diagram shows. Is there a
trick, tip placement more right less follow, that will allow me to get
to the fourh rail? Is there a better way to get on the nine? I know
better shape on the eight would work, but from where they are, how
would you go? Stun to the end rail with left? Draw to the end rail
with right?

take the CB back down for the nine. Perhaps y'all didn't put enough
right on it. However if the lie is bad, I'd for sure use low-right
back to the short rail for two-rail shape.

I have 760 and my table stays clean. Like I said, I cheated the
pocket. I went back and tried again and I scratched in the corner
once, but the other two times I made it. I see nothing wrong with the
shot you suggested, I just like mine better. On slow cloth, I may
play the safe.

The problem is that you are already using too much english, which is
widening the rebound angle off the first rail. If you hit it too soft,
it brings the corner pocket into play off the second rail. If you hit
it too hard, it brings the corner pocket into play off the third rail.
IF YOU WANT TO PLAY THE SHOT AS YOU SHOW IT (not that I necessarily
would do it that way), then you do it using pure follow and a good
stroke. This allows you to shorten up the angles off the first and
second rails, and the cue ball will pick up english off the third
rail, giving you the right path. Also, this kind of path completely
eliminates the scratches in the side and corner.

If you don't have enough stroke to get the cue ball this far, then you
need to work on letting your stroke out a bit. Getting this kind of
distance is not that difficult.
Can you lag the cue ball 35 feet (4 table lengths, up and back twice)?
If not then you need to develop a little more power in your stroke.

a viable shot on the nine. The only real danger here is coming off the two
track and into the corner pocket if you get a good stroke on the eight. No
disrespect to any of the other methods suggested but they all call for
pretty precise speed control. If you stun left and the cb doesn't carry
you'll get a narrow angle on the nine. If you go to the head rail and lose
spin and do not get to the foot rail you'll get a narrow angle on the nine.
Dale's two-way is probably the best choice, but again, speed is an issue.
If the eight banks, fine, as long as the cb doesn't rebound from the foot
rail too far you'll be in clover. If the eight does not make it to the foot
rail you will leave a cut shot or a bank shot with natural position on the
nine.

Have you ever seen the 8 or 9 rails to land on a bill shot? I can do
that one, but this one gives me trouble. Maybe I'm using too much
english. If I come off the second rail with residual follow it could
be slowing the cue ball on its way to the third? It is a nappy cloth,
I have been playing on, that may be a factor. I am going to experiment
with these suggestions to see which ones work best for me.

Actually, the scatter was much greater than this. These were my best
attempts (i.e. when I didn't leave it near the head rail). I tried
Frank Glenn's suggestion first, and like you, couldn't bring it around
with the exception of one try. He must have one helluva stroke.
Mind you, I hadn't played in a month and my stroke was some random
function of the intended direction plus or minus forty-five degrees
to either side (the same as before the break).
At any rate, this seemed to be the most forgiving strategy. The left
allowed for a little thinner hit on the 8-ball, and the less muscle
required to propel the cueball the necessary distance made it
considerably easier, well, "to control". It also more or less took
the upper right corner pocket out of the equation, except when the
stun mysteriously tranformed itself into follow :}

Yeah, it's relatively simple.

IMHO, probably too much english and too much follow.
The way you have this shot diagrammed, you do not want english off the
first rail because it opens up the rebound angle too much.
All the english that you need, which is just basic running english,
will be provided by the second and third rails. They are designed to
provide it.
Similarly with respect to having too much follow, you want to have
enough overspin to create a shorter angle off the first rail.
But you don't want so much that the cue ball still has a lot of
overspin off the first rail because it will tend to want to drift
long, creating a similar problem to what you had with too much
english.
It is really hard to tell sometimes with these WEI table layouts. But
based on what you have shown, and if I were in good stroke and
familiar with the table and balls, then I might look at some other
options like:

wrap on the 11. My record is 12 rails.

I know it looks way harder, but it's not. You have to use a good stroke,
and stroke hard.
You need just enough low to make the sidespin take on the first rail. Also
the CB doesn't lose as
much energy because it only hits two rails.
The biggest problem is scratching in the corner. Fell short only once.
Often to keep speed, low is better than high.
There was a tie-breaker on one of the Trick Shot Magic matches
involving 8 rails around to get to a dollar bill in the corner. I tried it
with the usual high running english.
Didn't come close. When I used low running instead, I got around just about
as far as the pro's did, and
I'm not a particularly powerful shooter.

Well, actually, the tables have Simonis 860 on them, a bit dirty but
still fairly fast. As a gauge, I can hit it 0 to 4-1/2 9' table
lengths, depending on where/if the contact is made.
I think yours was an excellent alternative, but with practice one should
be able to sink the eight in the side and get reasonable position on the
nine pretty consistently. It doesn't seem to require, as you put it, a
"King Kong" stroke (I like it) when you use the stun with left.

You definitely made it look easy. It also looks like the most natural
way to play it. But, although it's a bit hard to tell, it looks like
the eight in the video is about 2-1/2 - 3 ball widths from the cushion
(~ 7" - 8" to its center). If so, can you do more or less the same thing
with it 10" from the cushion? Sorry to nitpick.

shooter has over-rolled shape on the 8 ball. Usually though, the 9
ball is not in the exact center of the short rail as in the
illustration. So whichever side of center the 9 ball lays-- that will
dictate whether to use stun-left, high-left, low-right, etc.

Thanks. The asf is MPEG 4. My new little (size of a pack of smokes!)
video camera does MPEG 4. I can get about 40 min on a 64meg card! The
files will go straight to DVD without any more rendering, too.
The table is a Gold Crown I. It has been painted black except for the
Formica rail tops. S760. Built like a tank. Unfortunately I will be
selling it when we move (probably later after the US Open).

You are right on that one Larry. I have hit 9, and takes about all I
have. Being a great teacher does not so much take great ability, as it
requires knowledge, patience, and the ability to reach the student.
