A few years back I bought a few Accustats tapes that featured Rafael Martinez.

He was playing some of the best 9 ball I ever saw. (finished 2nd to Archer)

Does he still play and why doesn't he enter the major tournaments any more?

Rafael has been living in Germany and thus playing in Europe up untill quite
recently. He apparently has established a good name for himself in Europe as
would be expected with his strong game.
He is now back in the U.S and just played in the BCA 9 ball tournament in the
Riviera in May(not sure how he did though). However I do know that he just won
the last Reno event last month so he obviously is still a force to be reckoned
with.
Plays with Predator too!

Hi,
I've never posted on the RSB so far, but I have been lurking for almost two
years now and really appreciate the great information
you guys provide. Ok, enough blah, blah....back to the topic.

Rafael came to Germany in 95 and had his first remarkable TV appearance
against Bustamante in Freiburg with a nearly perfect match.
Django lead 2-0, when he scratched on the break. After that he wasn't able
to make one single ball anymore, because Rafael ran 8 racks and
played great safety when needed. Rafael won the match 13-2.

In 96 I played with Rafael in a team which was a great experience, not only
that my game's pretty similar (in style ;)) to his and so I could
learn a lot by practicing with him, he also convinced me of the Predator
shafts, which were fairly unknown in Germany until this time.

I haven't seen him in the last two years though and don't know where he is
right now.

Raphael Martinez was seen as recently as a few months ago in Baton Rouge at
a local tournament. He looks like he is aging rather quickly. He placed
second in the tournament where King Kong (Chavez) of LA came out of the
losers bracket like a man possessed to whip RM twice and take home the
cheese.

You better watch it Karsted, you'll give newbies a good name. First you lurked
for awhile before posting. (2 years is overdoing it a bit, but commendable
nonetheless.) Next you post an informative billiard related message.
Tastefully brief.

Please let me encourage you to post more and join in. I think you're just the
type of poster we enjoy here.

btw, to add some billiards to the subject. I've added almost 80 tournaments to
playpool.com over the past several days. If you haven't checked out the
tourney finder in awhile now is the time to do it. Please let your pool rooms
and tournament directors know we list US and Canada tournaments at no charge!

>>Plays with Predator too!<<

I play with a Predator. I hated every stick I ever owned until I bought my
Predator. I will never play with anything else. It moved me up 1 1/2 balls in
9 ball. No kidding.

Thanks for the welcome, Ed.
lol, the two year lurking period was more a result of my search for a
newsserver I could actually post from,
not a case of being too cautious or afraid ;).

I played in the Houston Open in March (I believe), and i watched him play
almost flawlessly though the tournament which he ended up winning. And even
though i don't get to watch many big tournaments, Hes the best overall
player i've ever seen in person I would say.

Where in Freiburg did they play? I've been to Freiburg 5 times this year
and haven't found anything. Admittedly, I haven't had real time to look.

Is there somewhere on the net that lists pool halls in other countries,
especially in Europe?
