Which of these makes the stiffer shaft in the $600-700 range?

I know Jerry will make it as stiff as you want it.

I don't know about the other fella.

A large percentage of Josey's cues go to Japan, where they like a very stiff
cue. And I also know that Keith will make it as stiff as you want it. BTW,
his cues are awesome.

Good Luck,

All of Keith's cues hit about the same. I've got a $275 sneaky pete and an
$800 cocobola and I can tell very little difference. I played with a
Southwest for 5 years and once I picked up the Josey I never went back. I
feel that I've been shooting close to a ball better, especially on long
shots that require a harder stroke. Check out his cues at www.joseycues.com
or email him at kjo...@joseycues.com . I've hit with Pechauer cues, but I
prefer Josey. John.

Any thoughts about what specific characteristics of the josey cue might
make you play close to a ball better than you played with the southwest
you were accustomed to?

Since I've purchased and played with multiple cues from both these
guys, I'll take a stab at this. First, I'd say both make cues which are
quite consistent. Any differences are likely be a result of the type of
wood used in the forearm. Ebony, for example, will sound and feel a
little different than maple.
Next, I'd say their respective cues play pretty similerly. I can go
back and forth with little or no adjustment. Both guys offer incredible
service (i.e. no "cuemaker's time"), and true custom capability. They
will make a shaft as stiff as you like. Keith offers laminated shafts
which are really stiff.
Both guys prefer to make cues which are on the stiff side, and a little
forward balanced. I think I remember Jerry saying that if he were
making cues just for himself they'd have a little less taper, but the
demand is for a longer taper. Of course, he'll make it any way you
like.
You can get a fine cue from either maker for less than half your price
range, so style might count for a lot here. Keith offers Uni-Lock
products, so if that appeals to you, perhaps you should take that into
consideration.
Whichever you choose, you won't go wrong.

Sorry I can't compare to Pechauer cues (never seen one), but the Josey cue I
have is a great stick and holds its own against other custom cues in my
collection. Hit is solid on the cue that I have, forward balanced, with a
very nice feel (this is my personal opintion naturally). The workmanship and
finish is absolutely flawless for this cue (I would think anybody who takes
a look at that cue would agree with me)!

Put me in your will, PLEASE.

My God, Joerg, don't you own any poor quality sticks?

JoeyA, a little greener than yesterday.
That Josey is beautiful.

I could hit hard with the southwest and the shaft would vibrate, however
with the Josey I can hit harder than needed and there is NO shaft vibration.
Maybe the shaft size also has something to do with it also. Have you ever
hit with a Josey cue?

John, what is the shaft size and taper of the Josey you are speaking of?
Thanks,
Joey

Oh yes I do. Recently got a stick from China, right from the factory. All
decals and deep green stain. Cost 10 USD. I think it's still value for
money...was just a mock gift from a friend but I still have it ;-)

How does it hit?

Uh, the hit is not too bad, what would put me off is that the cue doesn't
feel very balanced, hard to describe. Seems to be a very light cue with some
heavy weight somewhere in the butt.

I can speak about both cues, seeing as I have owned a Pechauer and a Josey.
Jerry makes a very good cue. I used to played with a JP-4 early into my
pool "career", and it was a very good cue. I currently play with a Keith
Josey cue (hustler-style) that has caused me to sell every other custom cue
I own. I have ordered another cue from Keith that will be delivered some
time in September. My preferences are a stiff cue with good deflection
characteristics and a good hit. Keith has made some changes to his cues
that reflect his emphasis on playability - Micarta ferrules, Talisman tips,
Radial pin to name a few.

Your choice will most likely depend on your budget. If you have the extra
money to step up to a Josey, I'd do it.

What's all the hubbub about "radial" pin? This only means it has flat
threads as far as I know (please, enlighten me if I'm wrong). This may
have a bearing 10 - 15 years into using it, I don't know. I have cues
that have 3/8-10 pins that are 6-8 years old, used regularly, and are
still tight fitting with the original shaft(s). So, wassup with this
"radial" pin thing?
