My third one was a Brunswick. I got it from a storage unit sale for $200.
It looked old. I was living in Lafayette, Louisiana, working in the
oilfields, and living large. Had it professionally set up,repaired,
recovered, polished, etc. That was $700. More than I wanted to spend, but
it shone. It weighed a ton. My house was center to a lot of parties, and a
couple of the bosses were pool players, so they'd ask to use the place
occasionally to entertain clients, high stakes poker and pool games.
One night, the owner of a oil company played on it. "I want this table,"
he said. I said I'd think about it. My boss cornered me about five minutes
later, and told me that he was working on this guy for a big job. If I'd
sell it to him, he'd make up the difference up to $5,000. I told him to
roll $5k into the bid, so it would cost him nothing.
I told the drilling company boss that when our company finished the XXX job,
he could have the table as a gift. I also told him I wanted to be a diver
on the project. We got the job, and I got the $5k before the table left the
house. Turned out to be an old one, and pretty valuable.
The bottom dropped out of the oil market right after that, and I went back
to Las Vegas. Out of all the tables I owned, I liked it the best. If I
could get another under those circumstances, I'd do it. IIRC, it was about
1930 manufacture.
If I had the room right now, I'd add a snooker table. Snooker or games on a
snooker table are much more relaxing. Even 8 ball with the 2 1/8" standard
colored balls. But it's hard to find enough guys who know how to play golf
and insurance who are any good.
