I just started playing again and need a real cue. I don't mind spending a
little more for high quality, but cosmetics are not that important to me. I
just want a cue with good action that will last.

I'm quite happy with the new Joss I just got last month. Very nice cue!

With this group it will be a toss up between Joss and Schon and I would
venture to say it will be about a 48 / 48 split (last 4% going to Meucci).

OH MY GOSH...you actually give meucci 4%??
so over rated.

my reason for picking joss from the 3 is the involvement in the sport! in my
opinion schon's have gone down hill a bit over the past few
years...however..i still own one

I don't think Meucci belongs on the same list as the other 2. I don't
know about the Schon, as I've never tried one, but I just got a Joss
and I love it. Don't forget Pechauer, I have one of those as well and
it's a great cue. Very high quality and the shafts are just awesome.
I also have a Meucci 95-15. I bought it mostly because of the way it
looked in Mueller's catalog. The quality is several steps below the
Pechauer and Joss, you can feel the silver rings. The Pechauer and
Joss are nothing but top quality. On a scale of 1 to 10 for quality,
I rate the Pechauer a 10, the Joss a 9.5, and the Meucci a 3. That's
just based on the 3 cues that I own. As far as shooting goes, I
usually grab the Joss. I have a Predator shaft for the Meucci and it
improved the cue quite a bit. It is unusable with the red dot shaft
as far as I'm concerned. Since I got my Pechauer, I never use the
Meucci anymore. Then I got my Joss and I alternate pretty much
between the Pechauer and the Joss. If I was going to a tournament, I
would choose the Joss. Just my 2 cents.

in MY opinion...the schon cues ive SEEN as of late, the shaft wood/quality
isnt what it used to be. the cues look good, but in my opinion dont play as
good as the "R" or "SL" series

It's really a matter of personal choice. You don't say how long
you've been playing or how long you played before you stopped playing.
Or how well you play/played. Do you play just for fun or do you take
it seriously? By seriously, I mean do you play/practice for several
hours a day or just maybe three or four times a week?
I had a Meucci out of Bob's first catalog. I liked it. Other people
liked it. I hadn't been playing all that long, and I played better
with it than anything else I had played with at that time. But I had
Dan Janes make me a custom Joss and it was the stone cold, gold
plated, Brazilian NUTS!! Like an idiot, I sold that for something
else, another custom by a top cue maker. I've played with Meucci cues
on and off over the years and finally quit playing with them because
of quality problems, cracked ferrules and joint collars and inlays
coming up through the finish. But I did like the way they played.
I bought one this year with a black dot shaft, just to see what all
the hype was about. Understand, I've owned and played with a Joss
sneaky pete with a predator shaft and wanted to see if there was any
difference. I played with the Joss with the predator shaft about
every other day for three months and hated it. And before somebody
pipes up and says I didn't "adjust", bullshit. I couldn't play worth
a damn with it. The black dot was another story. I liked it and play
pretty good with it. It doesn't play any better than my other cues,
though.
If you're going to play a lot of 9 ball, you might like one of these.
There is no "wobble", by the way. Pretty stiff hit. According to
Sammy Jones, who I bought the cue from, Shannon Daulton has said that
a Meucci cue with a black dot might be the best cue available for 9
ball. I don't know, I don't play that good. Meuccis' have always
been very forgiving.
If you play a lot of Straight Pool or 8 ball, you might prefer a Joss,
Schon, or a Pechauer (did I spell it right Hugh?) In my opinion, I
agree that Schons are not quite what they were, quality wise. Danny
and Jerry definately make two of the best of the production cues out
there. You might consider a Lucasi, also.
Try them all, if you can, and decide for yourself. I've been playing
with customs myself for a long time now and don't play all that much
with production cues. You might want contact a few cue makers about a
custom sneaky pete or a merry widow, no frills cue with a wrap and
rings.
I recently had Mike Gulyassy take down and retaper the newer shafts on
my Danbuilt (early Dan Dishaw) and put on new tips. It plays almost
as good as my Southwest cues, which I no longer own, and tha't saying
something!

Good luck,

Gary

ps: Meucci's quality problems have been pretty much solved, as far as
I know. A lot of people knock them, but a lot like them, too. But I
wouldn't trade my Danbuilt, Tucker or Gulyassy for one!

Ok, I haven't really looked at any recently. Mine's about 5 years old. Hell,
I'm not even sure what model it is. It's a 4 point plain jane, cocabola
butt, no inlays, two shafts, and it plays great. There's something about
that "plink" it makes and the feel of the hit that I just love. I have
several very high end cues by some of the top cuemakers, but the Schon is
the one I always come back to.

There are other guys that post here all the time that also have cues
and don't hound people like you. The primary person you're trying to
help is yourself. I'm here all the time, asshole, and will be here
again. YOU bother me. Take a hike and peddle your wares in other
ways.

I agree with Grady on the Schon. I've had a very plain (minimal
inlays), 19.5 oz Schon since '99 and swear by it.
