There was a request for Detroit area tournament info.
There are good tournys at Hall of Fame, Plush Pocket, and the Q-Club. The
big boys play in the opens at Plush Pocket and Hall of Fame. I have played
in each of these rooms and the tables are in beautiful shape to say the
least. Brunswick Gold Crowns. Tripple shimmed. Very fast simonis. and if
you don't split the uprights on those pockets- As Mike would say on the WRIF
AM Morning show here in Detroit - NO! AHH AHH

The open tournaments at Plush Pocket and Hall of Fame are stocked with a few
pro or semi pro players every week. Some of the locals you may match up
against-
John Binion, 26-33rd at 2001 US Open.
Ronnie Wiseman, house pro at Hall of Fame, 13th place in 2001 BCA Open
9-ball
Norm Wines, 2nd place 2001 US Bar Table Championship 9-Ball
Jason Kirkwood, 4th place 2001 Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour Championship
I think Jason is actually living outside of GR but plays occasionally.
Richie Richeson, 1 hole specialist
Alice Rim, top 20 on ladies pro tour. Alice runs the handicap tourney at the
Q club on Tuesday night. Alice drew into her boyfriend and local pro Kim at
the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour Championship and was eliminated.
Kim Bennet, 17th at 2001 Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour Championship
Mike Mangrum, once skunked Alex Pagulayan 7-0 in the Plush Tourny.
Jeff Pillon 49th place, 2001 US Open.
Adam Smith, 1st place $1000 added Hall of Fame Championship.

More Mid-Michigan room info:
Both Plush Pocket, the Q-club and Hall of Fame all have a good handicap on
certain nights. You can read below for tourney schedules and results.
Nick at Plush Pocket sold me a new Predator shaft for a good price.
The guy at Hall of Fame did a great job on my last tip. (sorry don't
remember his name though.)

He certainly does. Beat him in a tourny in Lexington once, and you'd think I'd
taken his lunch money. Maybe I did.

LOL.....I did a "team" thing a couple weeks ago. Triple elimination, 4 man
team, race to 7. The team we played had John Binion, Richie Richeson and a
couple other shooters (one couldn't speak english very well). They spanked us
7-0. The young kid that didn't speak english very well missed one ball. That
was the only ball missed in 7 games of 8 ball. I kept wondering, what team beat
these guys? They didn't win the tournament. I am not sure how they finished,
but they was shooting great against us.
The team that won it was from Columbus Ohio. Dee Adkins, Chris Bartrum,
Charlie Conkle and I don't know who the other one was.

Hustlin' Hank,

Was the fourth man a Spaniard? Quite short? Little bit puffy cheeked?
Did he by chance have his raven haired girlfriend around speaking to him in
Spanish? Maybe translating a bit for him?

That would be a brutal team.
There would never be a second shot against those guys.

That spaniards name is Francisco Diaz, he's won the Thursday 'Hall of Fame'
Open tourneys a few times. He is known as Spains #1 ranked amateur player.

Sounds like the guy. He didn't have a girl with him tho. The other guy
looked to be from Hispanic decent too, but spoke good english and told the
young guy to "focus". Young guy looked like he was up all night or on
something. They were brutal shooters! Seemed like nice guys tho.

When I saw Francisco Diaz playing at the Q-Club he had a female friend that
was helping him with his English. I believe her name was Whanda. This was
aparantly just after his arrival in the US from Spain.

Francisco would fit the description I gave to Hank.
Hank, does that sound like the teammate of Richie Richardson, John Binion?
That would be a formitable team indeed!

Sounds like a good description. Can you call John Binion and find out who
was on his team in Sandusky, Ohio. tournament? I had his number but lost it.

Francisco is from Spain, now living in Motown.

Hank,
I don't happen to know anyone on that team you played personally.
Francisco Diaz just happened to be the sharpest player I've seen around
metro-Detroit that I noticed did not have much English when he arrived so it
was purely a guess when I asked if one of the teammates looked like him.
As I said, I don't know John Binion personally but he has an ad in the
local billiards rag for lessons. His add lists a phone number of
313-640-1943.
I played John Binion for the chair in the Plush Pocket handicapped
tournament back in mid-November. He is a strong A++ player. He knocked me
into the losers side where I won one more match to face him again in the
finals. Because the tournament was handicapped I was getting the wild 7 and
last three from him. I was very proud to get the first set from him in the
finals before he ran me over in the second set. I had choked pretty good
against him in our first match for the chair and I was feeling bad about
myself for being intimidated. The man plays a strong game - no doubt.

After playing quite a few of the local A++ players in these handicaps I have
learned that I NEED at LEAST the wild 7 and last 3 to even think about
playing
at their speed.
Kind of nice that you can match up with one of many A++ players like that
around here for a $20 entry.
I play competitively as a B, at any game, that's about it.
To be honest I don't think I'll ever be any better than a B player unless I
get my own table again some day. I'm cool with that though.
I try to learn from the big dogs whenever possible.
What I took from my three sets against Binion Nov. 18 was that his pre-shot
routine is like clockwork. Everything from eye movements to warm up strokes
was identical prior to every shot.
I have always devoted practice time to my pre shot routine on the golf
course with much success, once a pre-shot routine becomes automatic I KNOW
how it can really serve to calm the mind, eliminate distraction, and prepare
the body for success. It works better than anything to relieve pressure.
Playing John Binion illustrated to me clearly how my billiards pre-shot
routine needed work. I have been working on it. I ever so slightly a better
player already.

If I see John Binion in a tournament around here I will try to find out all
the
names of the guys on the team they fielded in Sandusky.
