I'm not trying to reopen this discussion but while reading Play Your
Best Straight Pool by Phil Capelle, I came across a section called
"Curve the Object Ball Shot". Since there was no way I could read that
entire RSB discussion, I don't know if Bambu realized he had Phil
Capelle on his side -- I doubt he knew because if he did, I probably
would have heard him mention in it at least one of the posts I read.

Capelle diagrams this shot:

Fkv4kEut4kEFs4kDgs4kCat4kCJu@

Here is the text exactly:

"The 2-ball is blocking just enough of the pocket so that the 7-ball
can't be made, at least my means of a conventional shot. You can pocket
the 7-ball by jacking up slightly and using left English with a sharp
stroke. You can aim almost directly at the 7-ball. The cue ball will
deflect to the right and then curve back to the left. The spinning cue
ball will throw the 7-ball to the right. It will also put enough right
spin on the 7-ball to enable it to curve around the 2-ball on its way to
the pocket. Note: don't play this shot without first mastering it in
practice." -- pg 337

I don't think this reference came up in those threads. Just goes to
show that even the experts make mistakes and get things wrong.

BTW, did anyone ever try the wax paper thing to actually look at
object ball paths?

Phis is most certainly wrong here. Left english on the CB puts right on the
OB, which, when struck softly, can help the OB roll into the pocket by
hitting deeper on the far facing. That's all there is to it.

Capelle has a footnote to that section which says, "The curve can be
demostrated with wax paper".

And to bring it back to where the discussion started -
Phil says on page 346 that a frozen rail shot that is two diamonds or more
from the pocket has little chance of going with outside english. I, as well
as anyone, now know how wrong that is.

I noticed that one too and thought of you. Since both of those shots
should come up very infrequently in straight pool, one can be wrong
about those issues and still be a very good player as I'm sure he is.

I only followed the discussion with mild interest, tried the diagrammed shot
(s),
and only thought I was showing throw...howsumever..
on one of the ESPN trick shot shows, Tom Rossman did a shot that had extreme
ob curve. I have no idea how he did it. The cb went into a "tent" made of
large playing cards.
When the ob came out, it went straight for about a foot or 2, then
curved greatly. Haven't the faintest clue on how this was accomplished.
It was so severe, it probably wasn't related to spin transfer, though.

LOL. Too funny! I haven't read that book in a long time, but I seem to
remember Capelle writing in the forward that the information in the book is
knowledge that he accumulated from various pro players, and represented the
conventional wisdom on any particular subject. Maybe this is one of those
things he heard about but never really tried.

I think what he meant was: "...a frozen rail shot that is two diamonds

or more from the pocket has little chance of going with outside english

*If Dean is shooting it*"

Dean <-- hates that shot

Does anyone know how good Capelle is as a player? There are some
instructors around that aren't much better than hacks...

Thanks John, that info is appreciated. But as you can see, it wouldnt
have made any difference.

Exactly. If it can't be reproduced, it isn't scientifically sound. I can
tell you I produced cold fusion all day long, but it doesn't mean squat
until someone else can follow my procedure and get the same result.

LOL. A lab of sorts, I suppose. Actually Cold Fusion is a new Snapple
flavor (or should be).
