An Espiritu cue that belongs to a friend is very front heavy, I cant speak for
any of his other cues though. I would guess any custom maker can make you a
front heavy cue if thats what you want.

Mine are, but I'll make any balance the customer wants (within
reason). I like a forward balanced cue because I like the cue to lay
on your hand when you use an open bridge.

It seems that many cuemakers make "forward weighted" cues these days.
Then again, so did Balabushka and Szamboti. Most custom cuemakers will
put the balance point (or distribute the weight) anywhere you like. If
they won't, find one who will.

I'd decide exactly how forward you want the weight, before you buy the cue. I
had Kikel make me a cue that had a balance point that was 21&1/2 inches from
the butt. It played like shit. It felt like a brick in my bridge hand. You
might also want to deal with a cuemaker that will do it right and stand by
his/her work.

Easier said than done. My sense would be most custom cuemakers make cues
for a couple of reason (1) The artistic side, and (2) They have found a
consistent way to make a cue that they feel is great in their eyes (hands).
For you to go in with your own specifications and get a cue made (addressing
the 'do it right' comment), then ask them to do what could be endless
tinkering on a finished product doesn't make sense unless you plan to
compensate them for their time (addressing the 'stand by their work'
comment).

These guys are Pros in their field. Negatively referencing a cue Kikel or
anybody else makes a cue to your specs is wrong, blame the designer,
yourself. The way to accomplish this is simple - tell the cuemaker what you
are looking for and ask if he has anything like that you can try. If he
says no or doesn't like the idea, you may want to move on to the next
cuemaker. For most good cuemakers, unless they make an intentional
departure (Pechauer makes a couple of completely different feeling cues, for
example), you have to think that they are striving for consistency in the
feel, the art is the expression of their work.

DS,

I am interested in your comments. Let me see if I get this straight.

Dave Kikel builds you a front weighted cue at your request.
Cue plays bad.
You complained and he didn't do anything about it?

Joe
Visit www.classiccues.com for a vast selection of collectible cues We will be
supplying pre-ban ivory cue parts very soon. Will be available for trade on new
cues, for cuemakers obviously. New cues always coming...

I asked Kikel to make me a cue that weighed approx. 19 to 19&1/2 oz. (a pretty
broad range). The cue ended up weighing 20 oz. I told Kikel that I wanted a
cue that was balanced approx. 18&1/2 inches to 19 inches from the butt (cue was
21&1/2 inches).

To sum up...Kikel made me a cue that was not even CLOSE to what I requested. I
understand that a cue cannot be made to specs exactly as requested because of
the variables in wood, joint, etc... but this was way off. Everyone who tried
the cue thought it was terrible playing cue. I waited 8 months (he said I
would have the cue in 5), played with it for a couple days, and ended up
selling it for $300 less than what I bought it for.

On a side note, I collect cues. I own, or have owned Martinez, Schick, Omen,
Southwest, Bender, and others. Everyone of these cues was built to my specs
and turned out virtually perfect (give or take a quarter of an oz.). One of
the above cue makers played with and examined the cue that i bought from Kikel
and it said it could be used as a break cue or firewood, take your choice.

ds

I have owned 5 Jim Buss cues, 3 of them bought directly from him. The 3 from
him were built to my specs were finished in a very timely manner, and i
couldn't have been more pleased.

Well that sound like a totallay different scenario. I would be quite upset
myself. I have heard nothing but good things about Kikel and I am suprised he
didn't do anything for you.
