The Reyes/Mathews match was a joy to watch. Efren really is a great
one-pocket player and didn't have much trouble with Grady. The first game
with Efren breaking didn't take much time. He won it 8 to 1. The second game
was a lot closer. At one point Grady had 6 to 2 on Efren but Efren gets four
balls and the game is tied at 6 to 6. Grady gets unfortunate and scratches.
Worst yet Grady scratches 2 more times in the next few innings. Grady didn't
give up and got back to 6 to 6 before Efren finally beats him 8 to 6. The
third game was real close with Grady leading 7 to 6. Efren comes to the table
and has a ball just off the rail and up about 8" from his pocket. Grady
leaves him on the bottom rail with the other ball a little farther up table
from the ball by his pocket. He tries to make a 3 rail bank on it and comes
up a little short. Fortune was on his side though and as the ball is rolling
down table off the third rail it hits the ball next to his pocket and the
ball goes in. The other ball settles near his pocket and he quickly draws a
bead on it and pockets it to steal the game from Grady. You could tell that
Grady was real disappointed by the sudden turn of events. But to his credit
he finds the focus necessary to win the fourth game 8 to 2. It's now Efren 3
and Grady 1 in a race to 4. Grady's fortune turned for the worst in the fifth
game and Efren wins it and the match 8 to 0.
However the news of the tournament so far is about our own r.s.ber Joey
Aguzin. He gets matched up with Shannon 'the cannon' Daulton. Most of the
people in the room are betting he isn't even going to win a game. Well that
was quickly proven to be false because he wins the first game. Shannon wins
the next two and looks like he is going to easily handle our Joey. But when
all the dust settle Joey sents Shannon to the one lose side. He played great
and put in a respectable showing for us r.s.bers. More tomorrow.
Thanks - Alan

Reads like he was playing this shot. If the ball doesn't "fortunately" go
down, where did Reyes leave the cue ball. Would Grady have been able to kick
or bank to sweep both of Reyes' balls out towards Grady's pocket. Again, it
reads like Reyes was playing this shot like a true one-pocket player would.
BTW, congrats to Joey. Shannon Daulton is an extremely strong all-around
player. He is a notorious one-pocket player.

Efren is good but he was playing to pocket the 3 rail bank. He left Grady up
on the end rail on Grady's side of the table. Grady would have had to make a
real tough 1 rail bank to win and I think Grady won't have fired at it.
Because Efren gave out that great big grin of his whenever something
fortunate happens to him.
Great report. I wish we could get reports like these from other tournaments.
Thanks,
Mike
Question? Where is Troy Jones from?

Loree Jon and Sammy Jones?
How about ex-spouses Ewa and Jim Mataya? ;-)
Fred and Sharon Agnir? No chance in hell.

Fred,
I was sitting on the side where Efren faced when he made that
shot. He laughed, covered his face, mugged at the Accustats
camera and stuck out his tongue like he was gagging. However, he
sure accepted the outcome of the shot, like any true one-pocket
player would!
Best,
Tom Bellhouse
My opinion of Allen Hopkins is simply one word...CHOKE.
Can anyone tell me if Earl Strickland is still married and if
his wife is still playing pool as well? I played with him during
an exhibition match back in '92 and was just curious.
