Sadly, I don't think Tony was planning to play anyway. Maybe he'll be watching.

I wonder if I could get a gapper out of Mike Sigel if I tell him he's
eligible to play??

All kidding aside, thanks for the information, Joey.

On behalf of my country: Hey! You've got enough pros of your own,
don't try to assimilate ours too.

I know a lot of those German players. While they are all very good they are
not professional players. Nor are they a lock to win in a race to four
against a lot of the players that probably will participating.

I wonder where they got their information???

John

You have got to be kidding me?? I am from the Northeast, and there are
numerous professionals that you have left off your list. Frankie Hernandez,
Danny Basavich, Robb Saez, Mike Zuglan, Scott Richardson...just to name a few,
there are tons more up here, as well as around the US. This IS NOT an amateur
tournament, it is a semi-pro, and professional tournament. I think their
criteria for making that list were for players who played on the Camel tour.
I'd like to see a very good A amateur player match up against Hernandez or
Zuglan, LOL...what a joke. No offense Steve Lipsky, but you are borderline
pro. I think the people putting this tournament together are COMPLETELY
misleading the amateurs out there. I was going to make the trip from NY, but
not now. It should be advertised as an OPEN tournament with semi-pro and
professionals allowed. If you want to make a list of top pro's that are not
allowed to play fine, but as you have it now, there WILL BE PRO's IN THIS
TOURNAMENT. KB.

That information which I posted came right out of the BCA's site which
maintains a list of professional pool players.
JoeyA
P.S. BTW you are invited John. It is only a weekend Friday Sat & Sunday
Feb 2-4.
If you are not on that list of professional pool players you should make
plans to attend. It is a short race and anyone can win a race to 4. It's
eight ball on 4 x 8 tables. The pocket size is generous, I am sure...
That would benefit someone who has an aiming system which might not be quite
as accurate as a laser beam.:-)

And what is your definition of a pro?

BTW, Frankie Hernandez, Danny Basavich, Robb Saez, Mike Zuglan, Scott
Richardson...just to name a few, may be on the other LISTS.

Keep in mind that Joey prefaced this post by writing that it is only a
partial list. This part of the list may indeed have come from Camel
records. But, again, there's a larger list out there somewhere.

I wonder what your classifications are for professional status? Are
they based on:

1) Absence of another, permanent job?
2) Skill level?
3) Tournament placings / winnings?

While I can't speak for all of the players you mentioned, most of them
do have alternative means of employment. As to skill level, none of
the players you mentioned would make the top 75 list on the pro tour.
Where is your cutoff? Finally, as to tournament winnings or placings,
should someone that makes less than $10,000 a year from the game (as
I'd imagine most of the players you named would) not be considered an
amateur?

I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm just trying to see where
you're coming from. If you're comparing these players to the way YOU
play, that's something different than comparing these players to the
way a mid-level pro plays. And since the debate is about if the named
players are pros, one must compare them to the latter, and not the
former.

Steve, I spoke to the lady running the tournament before i posted. I asked
her what her definition of an amateur is... and she didnt have one. She led me
to believe that the field was weak last year, saying a few women placed in the
money. I would say this though, all those players that I mentioned, and i
left out many, are professional pool players. Whether they are in the top 75
or not. Zuglan is not a top professional player in this country?? C'mon
Steve, I thought you were smarter than that, no offense. Who knows what the
definition of a pro player is? I don't. Just because you cannot compete on
the Camel Tour doesnt mean you are not pro. There are definitely more than 75
pro players in this country alone. Some are on a higher scale of pro, but on
any given day Frankie Hernandez, for example, can beat a Ginky, Rempe, or
Varner.

Zuglan is probably an exception. But I would be willing to bet that
his name will appear on one of the lists to which Joey was referring,
even if it wasn't the list he published earlier.

My point was simply to ask what your criteria was in defining people
you feel should not be allowed to play. Your Supreme Court-ish "I know
them when I see them" is really not valid, in my opinion. It gives too
much power to the Tournament Director, and also naturally lends itself
to hometown favoritism. (The Texas-version of Mike Zuglan will
conveniently be left off the list.)

A standard must be set somewhere. It sounds as if the list they have
compiled (the whole list) does just that. Let's look at it before we
make judgments.
