I thought some of you might find this interesting. Here are the cues
used at the 2004 World Pool Championship in Taipei.
http://www.worldpoolchampionship.com/

Here ate the top four cues used out of 128 professional players:
1. Predator 30%
2. Schon 8%
3. Bear 7%
4. Joss 3%

I am surprised to see that 30% of the players are using Predator.

Interesting that JJ was playing with a Schuler. I think he used to use an
Olivier before taking up with Lucasi for sponsorship reasons.

Must be the "Broomstick" model.

I'm really suprised that hardly any players are using "custom" cues.
Note that I consider Schon a production cue by today's standards.

Despite how popular Southwest and Scruggs cues are for whatever reason I
rarely see anyone actually playing with them in tournaments.

>Efren Reyes Phillipines-made cue

This I find interesting, Efren is known to use a Judd and he used a Judd in the
WPC, but it was around this time he was going to make a switch to a cue made by
Edwin Reyes (no relation) then at the US Open he was back to his Judd, seems
either politics got in the way or he was just trying to scam a cue out of
Edwin, either wouldn't surprise me.

>Despite how popular Southwest and Scruggs cues are for whatever reason I

in the 2003 US Open Parica used a SW cue although he wore a falcon cue jacket
and was announced as a team FURY member... Odd.

Also JJ used an Olivier when he won the US Open but then struck a deal with
Shuler, who knows what he using now. If I were a pro and just won the US Open I
don't think I'd make a change.

I wouldn't take this list too seriously, because this is wrong for sure.
Some of the other listing also seem fishy. Mika is using a Mezz as he's
sponsored by them now. Heck, in an interview with Sky Sports before the
Bergendorff match he even says:

"just changed my cue a couple of months ago into Mezz cues and it's really
working well for me".

(No, I don't have that good a memory, I just checked the match.)

I'm not... if you get sponsored to play with a cue, the likelyhood is
that you'll take the money and run. Marcus Chamat for example was
playing with a Layani until the WPC last year when a large percentage
of European players suddenly switched to Predator.

I'm not naive enough to think all of those players suddenly decided
that Predator was a better cue.

Not that it changes anything significantly but you should add the
Falcons to the Bear stats because it's the same company.

I imagine LCS and Hank would be pleased to see a couple of Pechauers
in the list...

It was Predator policy a few years ago that they did not sponsor
players. Perhaps this has changed now. Do you have a web site with
a list of the players that they sponsor? Or do you have any player
web sites that advertise Predator sponsorship?

I may be mistaken, but I think Predator actually did sponsor Gerda. What
the hell! So would I given the opportunity!

That would be their claim yet it's also their policy to give FREE shafts to
players. I think we all know that pool players like anything free. I consider
$300 pieces of wood to be some sort of compensation, but I guess it's all in
how you want to read into it.

Not just free shafts, but the top players can get free entire cues.
But, on the other hand, this puts them on a level playing field with
most other production cue makers, so the fact remains that if 30% of
the players choose Predator shafts or cues over the other equally
available brands, that means that, well, 30% of the players choose
Predator shafts, which was the original observation.

Nonetheless, it is not clear if Predator still has the same policy.
At their web site, they have pictures of players who use their
shafts. The heading of that page says that they are not paid to do
so. However, if you find some of the individual players web pages
(like Hoffstater and Baretta, for example), some of them include
Predator in their endorsement/sponsor list. I might understand a
player *endorsing* a product without payment if they really do
believe it does something useful, but I don't think a player would
claim that Predator *sponsors* them without them actually getting
paid just to get a shaft or a production cue; if they did, then that
would eliminate the possibility for paid sponsorship from some
competitor, which doesn't seem like good business to me.

Actually what it says is "What do over 50% of the top ranked male
pro's in the USA all have in common?.....They all use Predator
technology without being paid to do so."

That's in the USA only. In Europe apparently that's not the case and
they very cleverly skirt around the issue. Marcus Chamat's site also
lists his sponsor as "Predator Cues".

I could probably find you a lot more if I had the time. Jennifer Chen
is a puzzle. I can find references for her being sponsored by Falcon
as well as Predator, and she's listed on Thierry Layani's site as
endorsing Layani cues.

>I don't think a player would

You both think wrong! IMHO, they give away as many as they sell! Just not to
the public. They charge through the ass for what they sell, to pay for all
the advertising and "player reps" they give them to.

just more hot air!

And indeed, one way to view that is that the actual *brand* of cue you use
is largely irrelevant... and so all of the hype about how important THIS
feature or THAT is is probably just that: mostly hype [or else the top
players wouldn't jeopardize their chances by using lesser equipment].

[and I think that's actually been mentioned here before: that once you pay
enough to get decent workmanship in a cue, most all other considerations
are pretty much moot]
