What an event. I went to play in the one pocket and got there Saturday
afternoon. It was like the fall of Saigon. 180 something bank pool
players, 156 one pocket players checking in, sweators and backers to the
rafters in a huge room with two dozen tables, Accu-Stats taping matches, and
vendors with dozens of wonderful cues in the hallway. The equipment was
first rate. Oak, cherry, and walnut Diamonds with matching lights (with a
beautiful cocobolo table for the Accu-Stats matches), Simonis, nice new
shiny Super Aramith balls. Scotty Smith in charge. Heaven.
The talent was awesome. Though the Filipinos were reportedly absent for a
tournament in their home country, Dalton, JJones, Cooney, Spaeth, Varner,
Mathews, Vickery, Crane, Coltrain, Kucharo, Gay, Hoa,Santos, Townsend,
Medina, Flaherty, Ellin, Deliberto, Icardona, and many others did show up.
In the "legends" bracket: Weenie Beanie, Cornbread, Dallas West, Cole
Dickson. And as an added bonus, Eddie Taylor and George Runde came into the
room to a round of applause and stood around shaking hands, signing
autographs, shooting a few trick shots, and telling stories. I believe
Accu-Stats did a group interview with Taylor, Runde Staton, Mathews that may
eventually be for sale.
It was non-stop action. $50 nine ball games and five ahead sets of one
pocket for $500 constituted the "cheap" action. Upstairs in the action
room, with another half a dozen tables, Cooney and Waldon (sp?) were at it,
eight ahead one pocket, for many, many, many Pokeman cards -- with many,
many, many, more Pokeman cards bet on the side. When I left Wednesday, they
were on a break after a day and night of play, with Cooney up one game. It
was all like a three ring circus. You quite literally didn't know where to
look and what to watch there was so much going on.
I cashed, finishing18th-24 out of 156 -- for me, a great tournament.
Overall I played real well, keeping the "dog" well leashed. And, if you
ever get a chance to see the Accu-Stats Grady/Varner match, you may catch a
glimpse of me playing Dallas West on an adjoining table. He beat me 3-2 (I
had him 2-1!) but provided me with what was probably the highlight of the
tournament for me personally. Now admittedly, he may say this to all the
girls, but as we were shaking hands after the match he said, "I really like
your game. I was lucky to beat you." For a guy that came up playing
straight pool and idolized the 14.1 gods, that meant a lot coming from a
world champion Hall of Fame type of guy like Dallas.
It was also a pleasure to meet Fred Agnir and Frank Brent. Of course it was
also a pleasure to see Sherm again. Sorry I didn't meet Barenada, Tom
Simpson, or Mike Janis. Where were you guys?
Well, that's it. Not much sleep over the course of four days, but well
worth it. The tournament is still going strong, albeit nine ball. If
you're within firing range you must go.

I don't think there are enough Pokemon cards in the world to cover that
match.

Congrats on a great finish in a great field.

Definitely a match to get. I'm not sure if you got a chance to watch it
while you were playing. It was one of the best in the tournament.

Aw shucks Lou, it was a pleasure meeting you too. ;-)

So, who won the one-pocket?

Before you buy.
So far, my pick to win the 9-ball is Buddy Hall. He shot .886
in beating Howard Vickery, and regrouped after a couple of
mistakes to take care of Dennis Hatch. Last year's winner, Troy
Frank, won a long, tough match against an older guy (Hal White I
think), and I know he must have been pretty mentally exhausted
by that match - I know everyone watching the match was.
Nick Varner is, well, Nick Varner. I don't think he's really
been tested yet in the 9-ball. Ginky and Banks winner Shannon
Daulton were just starting a match on the TV table when I left.
Daulton seemed pretty unbeatable in his earlier matches.
While I was watching the Frank/White match I sat behind Danny
DiLiberto, and listening to him chatter away with his old crony
buddies was pretty interesting. Every few minutes Grady
Matthews would stop by and tell some story or another. I'd
really like to see Grady do an autobiography some day as I know
it would be hilarious.
The big action upstairs is just ridiculous. They're playing 10-
ahead for $90,000. Apparently they've agreed that if they don't
finish by the time the tournament ends, they're going to buy the
table from Diamond, rent the action room themselves, and finish
no matter what. I don't know the names of the two players, but
the older guy was 3 ahead when I left.
Some tidbits:
Shannon Daulton has the worst taste in clothes on the planet.
Bill Stroud is a heckuva nice guy.
If you're Buddy Hall, and you've got Dennis Hatch 6-3 in a race
to 7, Dennis will half-ass his way through the rest of the match.
If you've never seen Dennis Hatch or Roger Griffis in person
before, you might get them confused (I did).
Howard Vickery uses an open bridge a lot - even on his breaks.
Nick Varner is using a soft break in 9-ball, and making the
corner ball almost every time. Isn't this what Corey Deuel did
that pissed Earl off in Milwaukee?
Ginky and I are exactly that same height.

Triple wow!!! Won a few pokemon cards betting on the side...bought a '95
Southwest cocobolo 6 pointer with 2 shafts) <gloat>....... sat between Beenie
and Cornbread in the "action room" and watched a 10 year old kid play $100 sets
(the kid was getting the last 4 and losing). There were signs showing the way to
the "action room." They said, "Action Room," with an arrow pointing the way.
Honest! Helluva tournament!! I'm going back next year and staying longer.
Did anyone see Mark Jarvis after Sunday night? How bad a shiner did he have?....

They had other business and non-business meetings in adjacent rooms
including a CPR class and some sort of cop convention.

Actually, I played him in the tournament Monday night and he looked pretty
good. Said he made up his own butterfly to close up the wound over his eye.
Tuesday I saw the hulk that hit him. He had a neck as thick as my thigh.
He wanted to talk to Mark, presumably to talk him out of pressing charges,
but security was escorting him out of the building telling him he was better
off just letting Mark get over it.

Don't ask me how or why he got slugged -- I don't know much more than the
above.

Shannon might make Mr. Black's ? worst dressed list but he makes my top ten
pool players list.
So Rafael really does play one pocket. He said he couldn't spell one
pocket... Gee, I guess he just got lucky.
Grady Matthews HAS ALREADY written the book. And it contains all of the
stories you heard and more. The book is its latter stages and I believe he
may be seeking a publisher.
How much would you pay for the book?
Paperback or Hardback?

I had a successful business meeting in Louisville saving the company roughly
a quarter million dollars. How'd you do?
Regards,
Fred Agnir <----- kept his $80 in his pocket
The LARGE money 8-ahead one-pocket match wound up after 4
days. I'm not "allowed" to say any more on this one, but
let's just say it was beyond what you could get away with in
the movies. The whole event reminded me of Mark Twain's
famous line:
"Truth is stranger than fiction, and that's because in
fiction, you have to stick to the possible."
I got to spend about 4 hours with Bill Stroud. We fooled
around with the squirt test, and his new laminated and
graphite shafts, and I heard lots of old stories of the
road. Man o man! What a guy.
The 9-ball tournament action was excellent. Buddy and Nick
played an Accu-stats match Friday night that was the closest
to perfect I've ever seen. Nick had a couple of bad rolls,
and was eliminated. Maybe somebody else can post the
Accu-stats numbers on this match.
Shannon took Buddy out. Ginky took Shannon out.
The finals came down to Dee Adkins (Columbus boy!) and
Ginky. Ginky won, having beaten Dee twice. Dee was the
crowd's favorite, unassuming and casual in his jeans and
omnipresent baseball cap, playing with only one stick and
shaft. In both matches, it really came down to who made
balls on the break (Ginky). Dee won the Overall Points
Championship (this will put him on the map), and Ginky won
the 9-Ball event in a hard-fought close one.
Ginky had his war face on the entire time. He finally
cracked a smile after the last ball went down.
The mini-tournaments every night were packed. At 4:00 am,
the room was always filled to the gills, with $10k and $15k
matches running constantly on the sides of the tournament.
The woofing was hilarious. I'd walk into the action room,
and guys who've never even seen me before would ask to play
$500 one-pocket.
There was no time to sleep, or even look out the window. We
had the best seats in the house, right in front of the
Accu-stats commentators. We got to play several hours on the
feature table, a $22,000 cocobolo Diamond. What a pleasure.
Even I looked like a real player.
The main tournament room was non-smoking every day until
after 11:00pm. How nice! The action room was so smoky you
couldn't see the games on the other side of the room.
I've got enough stories to last me a year (and then I'm
going back).

Funny, you saved your company that much money and I make over 1/2 that. Any
chance you are into engineering? Or let me guess, a lowly salesperson?

I'd respond with something witty, but you wouldn't get it anyway. If you
want to hurl insults, I'd rather take it to ASP.

Sorry, but I did not see any of Ralph Carnes' matches so I have nothing
to report.
