Margo Dydek
Center, Utah Starzz
"I know that there are a few players capable of doing it . . . It is
simply difficult to do. It seems to me that it is much easier to dunk
in men's basketball. In the women's game you encounter stronger
fighting and more aggressive defense that effectively prevents you from
dunking. There are no easy layups, and everyone is fighting for every
single ball. . . . I dunked, myself, quite a few times during
practices. I did that also in one of the games against the Belgian team
a year ago in Europe. I haven't had a chance to do so playing for Utah,
because most of the time I have spent . . . on the bench. But if I had
a chance to dunk  I would."

I read that quote a few days ago and meant to ask something about it at the
time: What does she mean "most of the time I have spent ...on the bench"?
Since when?

Well, Margo's helped Poland compile a 3-1 record so far, but another
player of Polish stock and WNBA experience has contributed to France's
4-0 start. In today's _Plain Dealer_, the Olympic Log devotes a few
paragraphs to Isabelle Fijalkowski, the Rockers' center for the team's
first two campaigns. She apparently wants to return to Cleveland
eventually, but said "Next season we have the European championships" to
indicate she would be staying with the French national team through that
tournament.
The blonde, whose ponytail has given way to a bob, scored 18 points,
including 4 overtime free throws, to keep France undefeated with a 73-70
win over Brazil, which slipped to 2-2 in Pool A competition. Margo,
incidentally, dropped in 32 as Poland dropped Cuba to 1-3 in Pool B.
Fijalkowski said she followed the Rockers over the Internet this year,
but was not able to keep in touch with her former teammates to tell them
how pleased she was by their progress. "With the national team, I've
been gone since June," she explained. Isabelle is a belle averaging
11.2 points and 5.4 rebounds for her team (not sure just what games that
includes, as such figures are impossible to achieve after 4 contests).
France will close out pool play with a showdown against undefeated
Australia tomorrow. Too bad we USA residents can't see that game live.

Hmmm. Well, I'd rather have 100% of a B-player than 80% of an A-player, so
I guess it makes sense.
Thanks.
(sooz)
But she is still attracted to playing in the United States. "It is
difficult for me to forget the big arenas I played in," she
recalled. "It helped me a lot. You get recognition from the media and
the fans. But the individualism might be too sharp, whereas in Europe
you work and train more as a team. So it is good for me to have the
experience of both sides of the Atlantic Ocean!"

This is one of those threads that neer dies.
For god's sake, the woman is 7'2". So dunk already and shut the heck up. All
this angst is unbecoming.

I guess she's frustrated with her minutes, but even though she was
selected All-Torch, even the All-Torch committee has noted and bemoaned
her lackadaisical play. Another question is why do people in Utah think
she is reluctant to dunk, when she actually wants to?

Oh, dear ... how horribly unloving!
I'm sure Poland's opposing teams would love to believe this...

Yeah, but wouldn't it be more impressive if another Polish woman who
has played for the Starzz returned to the WNBA and became the first
player to slam one home in league competition? Krystyna Lara, the point
guard whose national team lost in the Olympic quarterfinals to the host
Opals, leads off the September 30 birthday list as she turns 31. Erica
Mashia of Southern Cal Women of Troy fame is 23. Born in 1976 was
Angela Hamblin, who played at the University of Iowa. And finally,
blowing out 19 candles is the University at Buffalo's Rachel Martin.
Rachel's Lady Bulls gave the eventual champion Kent Golden Flashes quite
a tussle in one of the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals
I attended last March at Cleveland's historic Public Hall. Her team has
also been added to my page after Buffalo student Andrew Weber convinced
me he has indeed spent some time in the university's library - you know,
that big-ass building with all them books 'n' stuff...

Minor correction: they're not the "Lady Bulls" (and wouldn't that sound
dumb anyway?). They're just the Bulls women's basketball team. Until a
few years back, the women's teams were called the Royals, but that changed
in 1997 and all teams were given the same nickname. So, no "Lady"
prefixes are needed or used.
So, off to the library, then...
Andrew "hmmm...'The Pop-up Book of Agrarian Socialism" Weber

(reply here not above)
And I was so proud of myself for remembering that it's not the
University OF Buffalo, but (State) University (of New York) AT Buffalo.
But if you think "Lady Bulls" is absurd, how about the Centenary Lady
Gentlemen, or "Lady Gents" for short?

Speaking of the Mid-American Conference, Abby Glover of Eastern
Michigan's Eagles turns 20 this 1st day of October.

A couple of Olympic leftovers:
As visitors to Sydney packed downtown emporia Friday in order to make
last-minute purchases of Olympic souvenirs and gifts, many Australians
joined some of their international guests in congregating around
department store television displays. The attraction? The women's
basketball semifinal which pitted the host nation's Opals against the
Brazilian squad. Many barrackers stayed glued to the action even after
Michele Timms and her teammates had matters well in hand.
According to the e-mail sent to the _Plain Dealer_ by Cheyrl and
Stephen Schwind, a couple from suburban Lakewood staying at a bed and
breakfast about 8 miles from the Sydney Opera House during the Games,
emu tastes more like Canadian bacon than like the proverbial chicken.
The Schwinds have also sampled kangaroo, camel, and barbecued octopus.
One competitor Cheyrl and Stephen met is a 45-year-old German who runs
her own veterinary practice. After three tries, she finally made her
country's equestrian team and was thrilled to finish 18th in Olympic
cross-country competition.

I once had occasion to have an all emu dinner- emu soup, emu liver
sausage, emu steaks and (thank God for small favors) Angel Food Cake.
It did not leave me with any desire to have a second meal featuring
this particular ratite.
On a women's basketball note- Isn't that Stephanie White-McCarty
something?

> On a women's basketball note- Isn't that Stephanie White-McCarty

Once a certain Fever fan was sitting in a Fieldhouse
Under the shade of a sycamore tree
And she asked as she watched her fave ex-Purdue Lady Boiler,
"Who'll come a-watching McCarty with me?"
Watching McCarty, watching McCarty
Who'll come a-watching McCarty with me?
Down to her courtside seats came a visitor
Wearing the shirt he called his Caprismall T,
And she sang as an attempt to catch his attention,
"You'll come a-watching McCarty with me."
Watching McCarty, watching McCarty
You'll come a-watching McCarty with me.
Up from the bench jumped coach Nell Fortner
Wearing the gold Wolters won in Sydney,
And she asked the visitor to take the chair next to her
"Will you sit down and cheer on McCarty with glee?'
Cheer on McCarty, cheer on McCarty
Will you come cheer on McCarty with glee?
As he approached the bench, the visitor was blindsided
By an angry point guard who'd come back from Sydney
To hear how she'd been trashed - to retaliate, she told the man
"You won't ever sit down again unless you say 'Sorry!'"
Sorry to Karra, sorry to me, Tremitiere
Trash talk is my forte, it doesn't become thee!

Happy 22nd Birthday this 2nd of October to Miami of Ohio RedHawk
Valerie Jones. I'm sure anyone who calls her "V. J." does so with no
intent of insulting the New York Liberty's Vickie Johnson.
Yet another Sternvogel classic. Thanks. I think you deserve a waltz
with the player of your choice for that one.
