I haven't seen any information on High School Girls' basketball in this
newsgroup. I'm not sure if this is the place to post this, but let me
know if it isn't.

This is a list of the top girls' and girls'teams from the current Street and
Smith's College/Prep basketball issue.

PREPGIRLS' TOP 15
By Dick Weiss
New York Daily News
Reprinted from Street & Smith's College/Prep Basketball

1. PICKERINGTON, OH (27-1)

Coach Dave Butcher was one victory away from another perfect season and a
fifth state crown until last season's 59-54 loss to cross-state nemesis
Garfield Heights Trinity in the Ohio Division I state final. The 74-game
winning streak is over, but Butcher retains four starters for another run.
Heading the list is 6-0 senior forward Beth Ostendorf (19.3 ppg), whose
presence gives Pickerington the scoring punch needed to get to the state
finals again. The Stocks sisters, 5-11 senior Amber (5.4 ppg) and 6-3
sophomore Tamara (10 ppg, 5.7 rpg), also return with 6-1 forward Jenny
Anderton (10 ppg), 5-9 junior Cori Shade (11 ppg), and 5-9 junior Jenny
Fersch. The biggest test this year could come if Pickerington plays No. 2
Oregon State in its own Christmas Tournament (December 27-29). That field
also includes Albert Campbell of Ontario, Canada; Springfield Cardinal
O'Hara, PA; Christ the King from New York City, Gulfport Harrison Central,
MS; Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA; and Sparta White County, TN. Pickerington
will also play in the Chicagoland Classic in January.

2. OREGON CITY, OR (26-1)

Oregon City's Class 4A state championship last season could be character-
ized as a family affair. Coach Brad Smith can look forward to daughter
Ashley, a mistake-free 5-5 sophomore lead guard, to run the offense again.
The star of the show, however, is 6-3 all-state center Tammy Arnold, who
averaged 22 points and 15 rebounds and is rated the best post player in
the Pacific Northwest. Also returning are 6-0 senior forward Michelle
McKinney, 5-10 junior Shelly Alderman, and 5-6 junior Stephanie Osorio.
Look for major contributions from 6-0 sophomore Brianne Meharry and
talented 6-0 freshman Lindsay Yamasaki to get Oregon City through the
tough Portland-area competition.

3. ST. JOHN'S
Lake Central, IN (25-1)

Knocking off Kokomo's two-time defending state champions wasn't easy, but
coach Tom Megyesi did it twice, once in the preseason and again in the
finals of the tournament. Eleven of 12 players, including four starters,
return from last year's roster, so repeating is a distinct possibility.
The team revolves around 6-1 senior forward Kristina Divjak (22.6 ppg,
7.7 rpg), 6-3 senior center Leslie Rossa (12.5 ppg, 7 rpg), 5-9 senior
Jessie Mitchuson (the MVP of Final Four), and 5-0 senior point guard
Jill Raven. The top seven will be fleshed out by 5-10 junior Beth Bonic,
5-3 senior Paula Doring, and 5-5 freshman guard Kelly Komara. Lake
Central's only loss last year was to East Chicago, 57-56, in a regular-
season game. Looking to stand in the way this fall is East Chicago, Kokomo,
and Chesterton. St. John's faces West Lebanon Seeger with All-America guard
Stephanie White on December 30.

4. EAST CHICAGO
Central, IN (21-1)

If there is any team capable of stopping Lake Central's bid to repeat as
state champions, it is East Chicago. Coach Joe Huppenthal has all five
starters back, headed by a pair of preseason All-America selections in
6-1 center Tenille Adams (18.3 ppg) and 5-10 senior Monica Maxwell
(18.9 ppg). Two other seniors, 5-5 guard Madalyn Rivera (11.6 ppg) and
5-9 Jeanine Moore (10.4 ppg), rejoin them. Depth will be provided by three
juniors: 5-4 Crystalle Shelton, 5-6 Trese Parker, and 5-8 Kristie Gibbs.
East Chicago will prep for the tournament with a trip to the Chicagoland
Prep Classic in January and with games against Pickerington, Whitney Young,
Chicago Marshall, and Lincolnshire (IL) Stevenson. The team faces Lake Cen-
tral on January 21.

5. WHITE COUNTY
Sparta, TN (28-3)

It may be a small town, but it's big time basketball for coach Steve
Holland. The road to the state finals was halted with a 59-52 defeat at
the hands of Franklin County in the Class AAA semifinals. But despite the
loss of starters Christine Hutchings (UT-Chattanooga) and Andrea Baldwin
(Tennessee Tech), the beat should go on. Most of the load this year will
fall on the shoulders of 5-9 all-state senior guard Kelly Jolly (22 ppg),
who has already committed to Tennessee, and to 5-10 senior Amber Clark
(13 ppg) and 5-5 senior point guard Cara Sims (4 apg). Help will come from
6-0 sophomore Miranda Moore and 5-11 senior Sabrina Stafford. The sched-
ule is imposing. White County will play defending state champion Oak Ridge
and Livingston Academy twice, then compete in the Pickerington Holiday
Tournament.

6. DOHERTY
Colorado Springs, CO (23-1)

It was almost a dream season for coach Carl Krug before a 54-50 loss to
Boulder in the Class 6A state semifinals. Star guard Val Johnson has
graduated with a scholarship to Colorado, but the nucleus is back with
5-8 junior Jacque Johnson (9 ppg), 5-10 senior guard Dena Koskovich
(15 ppg), 6-2 sophomore center Nikki Swagger (12 ppg, 8 rpg), and 5-7
senior Stephanie Frisch (12 ppg, 6.3 apg). Moving into the starting
slot could be 5-8 junior Jenni Logli (10 ppg), 6-0 senior forward Karen
Rants (6 ppg, 5 rpg), or 6-2 senior center Chelsea Richardson (9 ppg,
9 rpg). Two freshmen, 5-9 Heidi Koskovich and 5-6 Ami Podczervinski,
move up from an undefeated JV program. The Doherty team played during the
summer as the Colorado Hoopsters and won the West US Junior Nationals.

7. ALTOONA, PA (26-5)

Could this team be better than the school's PIAA Class AAAA champions
of 1986 and '88? It may be a long time before coach Art Tanneyhill can
put out a starting lineup with five Division I prospects. Tanneyhill
returns six of his top seven players from last year's squad, which
reached the Pennsylvania state finals. His starting five will consist
of 6-0 guard Jill Bartley (9 ppg), 6-0 forward Jessica Montrella (10.7
ppg), 5-9 guard Julie Sommer (12 ppg), 6-2 center Krista Thomas (12 ppg,
6 rpg), and 5-9 guard Michelle Lenhart (4 apg). Look for 5-5 junior guard
Courtney Kaup (6 ppg) and 6-1 junior center Jill Humbertson to contribute.
Altoona will host St. John Vianney of New Jersey and Baltimore Western in
its holiday tournament .

8. WASHINGTON
Cedar Rapids, IA (22-1)

It should be no surprise that Washington is considered the top team in lowa.
Coach Paul James has four starters back from a team that reached the state
4A regional finals before losing to Dubuque Senior, 50-45, in overtime.
Senior Amy Herrig, 6-4, stopped the Warriors in the lowa 4A state regional.
Runninq the team again will be 5-8 firstteam all-state senior point guard
Stacey Frese (18.5 ppg, 5 apg, 60 three- pointers). Other starters are
6-2 senior Kayla Pirtle (14 ppg) and 6-0 junior Amanda Bartz (6 ppg),
with 5-8 senior Tammy Sloane (10 ppg) and 6-0 senior Deliese Brewster
(6 ppg, 7 rpg).

9. CLOVIS WEST
Fresno, CA (27-2)

California Division 1 state powers don't usually come from the central part
of the state. The Golden Eagles are the exception. Coach Jose Hernandez has
some of the best talent in the Fresno area since the mid-'80s. Clovis West
returns his top seven players and nine of 12 from last year's Northwest
Yosemite League champion. He can build nicely around 6-3 senior center
Adrian Williams (15 ppg, 11 rpg), a second-team all-state selection; 5-11
junior guard Paige Bowie (13 ppg), 5-11 sophomore forward Lindsey Dion (11
ppg), and 5-9 senior guard Doreen McCauley. The final spot will be between
5-9 junior Becky Jones and 5-10 junior Sarah Lien. The team's only losses
were to Alterton Sacred Heart (69-59) and Lynwood (62-51) in the Southern
Sectional finals. West Clovis will play in the Sacramento Shootout, the
Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, and the Great Alaska Shootout in
December.

10. CHRIST THE KING
Middle Vlllage, NY (26-2)

The Chamique Holdsclaw golden era is coming to an end. During her first
three years, the 6-1 forward/center was the catalyst for three state
titles and a combined record of 78-3 against national competition. Coach
Vince Cannizzaro, who is be looking for his fifth consecutive New York
Class A state crown, can surround Holdsclaw with an underclass nucleus and
the vestiges of a strong JV team. Help should come from 5-6 junior Kristina
Alexander (8 ppg), 5-9 junior guard Catherine Tubridy, 6-0 senior center
Sue Serowick (8 ppg), and 5-10 junior Jill Kraft (10 ppg). Christ the King
opens the season in Altoona and travels to Pickerington, Ohio, for the
Lady Tiger Classic in December.

11. SEQUOYAH
Canton, GA (29-3)

New schools aren't supposed to dominate this quickly, especially in Georgia.
But coach Scott Birdsmith, who took over the reigns at newly built Sequoyah
four years ago (93-26), guided the Lady Chiefs to their first Class 4A
state championship. Even with the loss of three starters, Sequoyah will
be the favorite again with 6-3 sophomore center LaShonda Stevens (20 ppg,
10 rpg) and 6-4 junior Chelley Landry (12 ppg, 8 rpg). Junior point guard
Danielle Doneyhew, 5-8, should make a big impact. The other two starting
spots will among 5-10 senior Whitney Christian, 5-9 senior Susan Audia,
5-7 freshman point guard Tiffany Padgett, and 5-3 junior Michelle Cantrell.
Sequoyah faces Marietta Lassiter during the season and will defend its title
in the Deep South Classic in Atlanta during holidays.

12. STEVENSON
Lincolnshire, IL (30-1)

Expectations are high for coach Frank Mattucci. Stevenson returns four
starters and 10 of its first 11 players from the team that lost to
Libertyville in the sectional championship. The Catchings sisters, 5-10
junior Tashia (14 ppg) and 6-0 sophomore Tamika (18 ppg), daughters of
former NBA player Harvey Catchings, give Mattucci inside/outside punch.
Other starters returning are 6-0 junior Katie Coleman (10 ppg) and 5-7
junior Trish deClark (7 ppg). Mattucci was the coach of the Chicago AAU
team which captured the 16-under championship, while Tamika Catchings
and Katie Coleman were members of the 15-under AAU title team. Stevenson
could face Pickerington in the Chicagoland Classic in January. Chicago-area
powers Maine West and Chicago Whitney Young are also on the schedule.

13. TRINITY
Garfield Heights, OH (26-2)

Don't tell Pat Diulius that last year's Division I state championship was
an upset. It was billed as the big game, and Trinity came away the winner
over Pickerington, 59-54. The Lady Trojans should be strong again this
year, but they will depend heavily on guard play after losing 6-2 Na'Sheema
Hillmon to Vanderbilt and 6-1 Malika Willis to lowa. The leadership burden
falls to 5-10 sophomore sensation Semeka Randall (17.7 ppg, 8.8 apg) and
5-5 junior guard Chrissy Falcone (11 ppg). Other help comes from 5-11
junior Sasha King (10 ppg), 5-9 seniors Kahilah Cunningham and Lisa Wool-
lacott, and 6-2 senior Jessica Vanco. Trinity has Pittsburgh North Catholic
on its schedule and could face Pickerington again in the state playoffs.

14. WESTERN
Baltimore, MD (23-2)

They are babies no longer. Coach Breezy Bishop's class of '95 has now
arrived. The core group of six seniors, which dominated play in this city,
includes 6-0 all-state forward Chanel Wright (16.4 ppg), 5-5 point guard
Kim Smith (12 ppg), 6-2 forward Danielle Davis (11 ppg), 5-9 guard Tesha
Tinsley (10 ppg), and 5-10 senior Felicia Burrows (10 rpg). The Doves got
revenge for a crushing defeat by state power Old Mill in 1993 by taking
last year's Maryland Class 4A state championship. Bishop will take the
Doves to the Altoona Rotary Tournament in December.

15. SACRED HEART
Aterton, CA (38-0)

Prolific scorer Alexis Felts has gone off to Colorado, but coach Mike
Giaradella should have another Bay area powerhouse. The tiny private
school, which won Divison V in 1993, moved up to Division I last year
and beat powerful Lynwood in the state final, 59-53. Giaradella will
rebuild behind 6-2 senior Jenny Circle, who averaged 19 points and 12
rebounds and is one of the top post prospects in the state. Also draw-
