From what I've heard it was sudden and "inexplicable." Surprising enough that
it caused Van Gorp and another teammate (I forget who) to jump ship and migrate
to Duke. Sorry can't be more help, but am confident someone will shortly give
you a better account.

Yes it was Erickson. Summer Erb also played at Purdue and left. So did
Leslie Johnson and Danielle McCully, who went to Western Kentucky and
graduated last year.
the reasons for Dunn's dismissal were murky but she did receive a $100,000
settlement, which suggests that something wasn't quite right with the
situation. There's a nice article about her on the ESPN website right now,
as she watches the players she recruited square off against each other
from the stands at the Final Four.

In reality, Lin Dunn wasn't "fired." Her contract expired and wasn't
renewed. Negotiations to extend the contract stalled and were called off
as "too distracting" during the season and were never resumed. Even
though it was a case of not renewing her contract, Purdue did reach an
out-of-court settlement in which Dunn was paid what was rumored to be
$125,000 to drop her sexual discrimination suit.
As to why her contract wasn't renewed... There were all sorts of rumors
about things discovered when the police raided a party attended by either
Dunn, her assistant coaches and/or some of the players, but I've never
heard the exact same account told twice. I have to think that this is
mostly rumor.
It is only speculation on my part, but I think it was signs of a program
beginning to get out of control which lead to Dunn's ouster. Purdue
returned almost its entire team following its 1994 Final Four appearance,
but player personnel problems developed the following season resulting in
two players including a "national freshman of the year" transferring and
a disappointing regular season though we did make it to the elite eight.
The following year (Dunn's last) was even more disappointing with an early
exit from both the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. Purdue assistants were
found guilty of minor NCAA recruitment violations, an assistant quit
without reason midseason, there were reports of more player unrest and it
was found that some team members were selling their complementary athletic
equipment at a local sports store. I think all of this combined with the
stalled contract negotiations convinced the athletic department that the
program should head in a different direction.
With Dunn's departure the program seemed to be in shambles as four players
transferred out and two or three recruits went elsewhere. Purdue was left
with only six scholarship players of whom only three had played any
college minutes. Enter Nell Fortner who talked Stephanie and Ukari into
staying and in a truly magical season managed to put together a Big Ten
Co-championship and came within an overtime loss of knocking off ODU and
making the Sweet Sixteen. She also brought in an assistant named Carolyn
Peck.
Hope this answers some questions. Sorry it's so long.
The other Duke transfer was starting guard Nicole Erickson. There were other
players that transferred to other schools, but I don't know their names.
Somewhere I read that they were upset not only that Dunn was fired, but that
an attempt was made to ruin her coaching career and reputation. No
explanation was given regarding what was meant by that or what occurred.
There were some minor recruiting violations found in 1995 and Dunn and her
assistant were not allowed to recruit from Feb 15 to March 15th of 1995. Don't
know if that has anything to do with the firing.
CBS Sportsline is reporting that Dunn was asking for a raise, and that she
was only the 8th highest paid coach in the conference despite a winning
record every year and conference championships and NCAA tournament
appearances (final four appearance one year).
It is reported she won a $100,000 settlement from Purdue concerning the
matter.

Heheheh, :-)
"rumor has it" that Dunn was 'let go' for her personal conduct. "rumor has
it" that if you or any of the ace reporters at ESPN/FOX/CNNSI had checked
the police records they would find that the cops where called to Dunn's home
on more than one occasion. While she was generally very well liked in the
community (she is hilariously funny), she also made some pretty poor choices
in public - where and who to get drunk with being a minor example. This did
give Purdue and the program a black eye with several 'money' people in the
area. While much of the above will be dismissed as 'rumor', I've heard
very similar 'rumors' from too many people who would know. Basically Dunn
and her program was getting out of control and it needed to stop.
On the Purdue side, just the fact that there was basically no explanation
for Dunn's 'release' left other potential employers coming to their own
conclusions - and there were also rumors that some in the Purdue athletic
department went to previous final 4 tournaments and made 'off the record'
comments to generally plant a seed to ruin Dunn's credibility in the
basketball community. The 'contract negotiations' excuse was a timely side
issue to get rid of her, thus covering up the actual reasons. Interesting
that they coughed up some coin for Fortner and then ended up paying Dunn
$100,000+ to shut up and go away. I would bet that she knew they would
settle the sexual discrimination lawsuit just to get on with life - but BOTH
sides had a lot to lose if that one went to court.
Personally, my opinion is Dunn loaded the gun and pointed it at her own
head... Purdue had the stones to pull the trigger. I would guess the
reason she and Machelle Joseph were so visible at the game was they need a
job and the extra press attention might help jog the memories of people who
might need a coach (and staff) - as well has getting the opportunity to pour
a little salt in the reopened wounds of her former employer. Her leak of
supposed recruiting violations by the men's program only shows that Purdue
was right to get rid of her. While I am not a huge basketball fan, I has a
smile on my face last night when I saw Dunn sitting in the stands and not on
the Purdue bench.
Now comes the 4th coach in 5 years....
