Highlight of meeting the players was greeting Tricia Bader with
"Do you know somebody named Karra in Utah? She says you got no
game and were just taking up bench space for the Starzz." Of
course, she knew I was kidding, and told me Karra is "a neat
lady". Even told me a little about Moab.
As often as you hear the cliche, it is true about Eva Nemcova -
she is much better-looking in person than on TV or in photos. I
didn't recognize her and wondered if the team had made some
last-minute trade. When she said "I'm Eva", I told her I felt
really embarrassed, since Several of my ancestors had come from
the present-day Czech Republic.
Also was surprised that Ann Wauters looks much less gangly
up-close. I asked her if she felt any pressure about being the
first draft choice, and she said "not really". Vicki Hall was
very pleasant after I told her about the newsgroup and how I had
been promoting her cause. Suzie McConnell Serio was kind of a
disappointment - perhaps she was miffed about having to be away
from her family for part of the holiday.
Once I recognized Janice Braxton, I told her "Coach says you're
playing Wednesday in Minnesota - somebody tore a ligament." I
thought of asking the Louisiana Tech alum if she knew anything
about the Leon Barmore resignation-return, but she was busy
circulating amidst her adoring public. Told Helen Darling I was
glad she had joined the team, as I would be able to pun off her
last name all season. Forgot to ask for dirt on her ex-Penn
State teammate, Chrissy Falcone...
When I saw people lined up for Merlakia Jones's autograph, I
yelled out "She's only charging $5 a pop!" Thought of sharing
the little poem I had written about her, but just then someone
who obviously knew her quite well showed up. Saw a girl in line
for Mery Andrade's signature, and asked "Do you even know this
player's name?" When she confessed she didn't, I said "It begins
with an 'M'!" Mery thought I was funny - razzed the kid about
signing both a shirt and a paper when "you don't even know my
name". Saw Pollyanna Johns and Chasity Melvin, but didn't get to
talk to them. Never recognized Rushia Brown if she was there.
Happy Birthday to the Duke Blue Devils' Michele Matyasovsky,
who turns 19 this 29th of May.

Thanks for the scoop on the 5k. Sounds like it was a lot of fun. Too bad
you didn't get to talk to Merlakia Jones much, because I hear she is a big
cut-up. Remember the mouthguard with the teeth blacked out she wore during
a televised game last year?
(sooz)

Indeed, I invoked it in the quatrain to which I alluded. For
newcomers or those who have forgotten:
Cleveland Rocker All-Star Merlakia Jones
Sings the National Anthem in her dulcet tones.
She does the move she calls the Lake Shake.
Thank goodness those teeth in the last game were fake!
One additional note: there was a huge inflatable replica WNBA
ball on display outside Gund Arena. Based on the messages
applied by various signers, it appeared that the sphere had been
in Houston before coming to Cleveland. I printed "STERNVOGEL -
Proud Rockers poster on Usenet rsbw" and added that three
particular members of this newsgroup "rock". Of course I could
have added many more names. Cultural diversity fact: Janice
Braxton dated her autograph "5/29/00", while Belgian Ann Wauters
appended "29 May 2000" to her signature.
