For example, during the Magic-Pistons game tonight, Shaq and Laimbeer (the
crybaby thug) were happily banging under the boards. Then things got a bit
heated and they got in each others faces. Alvin Robertson then came over
and tried to separate them. With a bit of help, he managed to move Shaq
away from Laimbeer, and continued to talk to Shaq. I guess Robertson said
the wrong things, because just as Shaq was about to walk away, he suddenly
turned around and started arguing with Robertson. Next thing, Shaq suddenly
planted a huge, meaty fist on the right side of Robertson's head! He landed
the shot squarely, kinda like Greg Anthony's shot on KJ, except that Shaq
was in uniform and facing his opponent. The fight was quickly broken up, and
both players were ejected.
Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Derrick Coleman threw a wild right at someone on
the Sixers. I don't know why, but he missed really badly, and of course, he
was ejected from the game.
I hope that Shaq gets suspended for at least 2 games. I love the guy, and
think he's a great player, but he hit Robertson pretty hard. Besides, I'm a
big Knicks fan, and I'm tired of hearing how dirty they are, and how lily
white and pure everyone else in the league is. Shaq's flagrant shot should be
viewed as harshly as if it was thrown by a Knick. Just my opinion, though.
Also, players like Shaq and Coleman (not to mention all of my Knicks who
got into that fight) should get fined by their teams for sheer stupidity. They
are on teams that are fighting to get in the playoffs, or for better seeding
in the playoffs, and can ill afford to be suspended.
As a totally unrelated sidenote, people have been making much of Shaq's impact
on the league, and for good reason. Wilt himself, on ESPN's Sunday Night
Conversation this past Sunday, predicted that Shaq would be the greatest center
ever, Wilt included. Pretty surprising, huh? Anyway, the full interview will
be aired tomorrow (Wednesday) night.
Well, that's all...

Go Knicks!!!!
Sounds like you were watching a different game. Shaq was going to take a ball
up strong and Bill grabbed him around both arms to keep him from going up.
The foul was called Bill let go and Shaq turned towards him because he was
mad that he was held. Bill backed up players separated them and Robertson
called himself holding Shaq from behind. The thing is about over and Robertson
*pushes* shaqs arm and is still talking trash. Shaq said enough is enough and
lowered the boom. Twice with the same fist to each side of robertsons head.
Then they had to *hold* robertson back. Imagine a chihuahua going after a
rottweiller. Sounds to me like he didn't have any sense anyways.

Cause he didn't really want to hit him. If he did he would have and the fine
or suspension would have been more. He just wanted to send a message that
Gilliam couldn't come at him with elbows.

That is bunk. Shaq should not be suspended at all. Robertson grabbed him,
talked a lot of shit and then pushed his arm. He was looking to get hit
and he got hit. Shaq is a whole lot more valuable to his team than Robertson.
It looked to me like Shaq got set up. It didn't work though because Orlando
still won but we might not see Shaq against Charlotte Thurs night.

So Robertson threw his face at Shaq's fist. :0:0:0
Seriously though, Shaq should be punished for by the league by a large
fine and a suspension, just like any other player in the NBA would be.
Shaq is strong enough to have really hurt Robertson (or anybody else
he happens to punch.) As painful reminder of what these NBA physical
specimens can do to each other, remember what Kermit Washington did to
Rudy T. So please don't dismiss it by saying ...

So what you are implying by "Shaq should not be suspended at all" is
that the league knowing Shaq's value to his team and the league itself
should have a double standard concerning its one superstars. Now this
is true bunk.

I think the rule is if you throw a punch, you're ejected for at least
a game. Since Shaq was thrown out at the incident he may not have to
be suspended. I don't know how the front office will deal with this.
Remember Jordan? He wasn't caught throwing the punch until after the
game, when the league saw the film. Then he was suspended. I think the
speculation was that if he were ejected during the game, he might not
have had to sit out a game.
So it does not matter if you're provoked, or how much you're worth
to the team. If you throw the punch, you're out.
The question is for the NBA to decide: Is a fourth quarter ejection enough?

Boy, I'm replying to everything today.
Well, since this doesn't seem to be public knowledge quite yet, Shaq was fined
$10,000 and suspended for one game, and Robertson was fined $7,500.

No I dont think there should be a double standard. I dont think throwing
a punch at someone deserves an automatic suspension. I think the case
should be reviewed individually. In this case I think Robertson brought
it on himself and a fine should be sufficent punishment.

The league is going to fine Shaq, and probably suspend him. NBA had been
quite fair in handing fines and suspensions this season. They did not
spare MJ, remember? I think, anyone involved in punching should be heavily
penalized, whether he's Jordan, or Rodman.
Kaisar
I think the league will have a hard time not suspending him. They just
got done suspending Rivers and KJ for 2 games for throwing a punch that
didn't land (Rivers) and setting an aggressive pick (KJ). You can talk
about who brought what on until the cows come home, but neither of these
actions were as severe as Shaq's.

Provoked or not, he threw the punch. That's justification for ejection.

If you let a "potential-superstar-barring-career-ending-injuries-rookie"
get away with this, then be prepared for more of this sh*t in the near
future. Even the GOD of basketball (not Chambers!!) didn't manage to
escape this season. We've had enough of this fighting crap. I say slap
him with a suspension (which he got) and let's get on with the games.

IN NBA, PAYING THE FINE NO LONGER MEANS PAYING THE PRICE
Maybe it's an Irish thing, but I like honest fistfights. Punching a deserving
applicant in the nose is one of the 4 or 5 best feelings in the world. And
being popped a good one is far from 1 of the worst.
Putting a $290K price tag on that recent NBA skirmish in PHO is at least as
ludricous as inviting Jesse Ferguson into the ring with Bowe and calling it a
$6.5M spectacle. Knicks guard Anthony was the only participant in PHO who
deserved a fine and suspension. He copped a Sunday.
That's a phrase from Alex Hannun and another time: the days of wine and bloody
noses. "one thing you never did, you never copped a sunday" said Hannun, who
coached NBA champs in STLou and PHL. He meant you never sneaked a Sunday
punch. "you gave fair warning 'the next time down the court' a player would
whisper 'it's you and me.' There was honor to it.
During the 50s, in the era of MSG doubleheaders, all 4 teams-incl the Knicks-
often wound up at the same 8th Ave bar to settle outstanding accounts. Speaking
for himself, his brother and Jack McMahon, Al McGuire said: "You always knew
when a fight ready to go. All the Irishmaen started taking off their watches."
Weight classes were not strictly observed."If you don't respect me as a coach,"
Hannum finally told Wilt, "at least you're goint to respect me as a man."
They slugged it out in an arena bathroom. Neither has ever divulged how the
bout was scored, but Sancho Panza probably had it right. Whether the stone hits
the pitcher or the pitcher hits the stone, it's bad for the pitcher.
Red Auerbach once batted out a fan in the Celtics' locker room. He was one of
those maddening custumers who yammered insults throughout every game and, after
the games were over, custumerily stalked the team to the very portal of the
locker room, yipping at the last player's heels like a rabid schnauzer. Except,
this time, he made a horrible miscalculation.
One of the Celtics had lingered by the bench (Jim Loscutoff, of all people).
Coming up behind the barking fan, Loscy shoved him in and clicked the door
shut behind them. "I'll never forget the look on that fellow's face," Cousy said.
"The room was completely quiet. There he was, all alone with the Boston Celtics.
Arnold took care of him."
Calvin Murphy, who had to wear 8 pairs of socks to get to 5-9, used to chop
down 1 diseased redwood a year, usually the most obnoxious player in the league.
When Little Calvin made a spanish omelette out of Sidney Wicks, everybody in the
country, incl Sidney's mother, cheered.
Murphy was the poetic descendent of Al Attles, another lovely little guy with
hands like pistons. Z Beatty and Bob Ferry could testify to the fact, but Barry
Kramer knew it best of all. "Don't do that, Barry," Al told the latest hotshot in
the Warriors training camp. "This is the 2nd time I've told you, Barry. Now, don't
do that."
To arrange himself a jumper Kramer had a clever, albeit illegal, little method
of hooking his defender and casting off. The third time he hooked Attles, Attles
hooked him. Kramer woke up in a different frame of mind. Thereafter, not only
could he never hook Attles again, he could never hook anyone again. That was all
for Barry Kramer.
The NBA swore off honest fights in '77, when Rudy T's face was shattered by
Kermit Washington. In 1970, R_T's rookie season the veteren Paul Silas had balled
a giant fist in PHO and the rookie had run away. Perhaps that was the germ of the
catastrophe. R_T ran prow 1st into either the luckiest or unluckiest roundhouse
ever uncorked. Both R_T and Washington are good and decent men. It was an
accident. But, after that, the league established prohibitive fines.
The disgrace of ice hockey is that the fights are not really spontaneous. They are
contrived. Dismally, there are men whose primary function this is. It's what
they're hired for. It's what they do. It's dishonest and depressing.
Honest fights can be appropriate. It was honest for Eddie Matthews to pound Frank
Robinson and his high cleats into the dirt at 3rd base. It was appropriate for
Robinson to homer through closing eyes in the 2nd half of the doubleheader.
One of the primary differences between men and women is that men think there are
things worth dying for and women think there are things worth living for. But
don't we all think there are things worth fighting for? And isn't your work,
even if it's BBall, one of those things?
Greg Anthony, who came off the bench in street clothes to sucker punch KJ, drew
a 20,500 fine and a 65,000 suspension. What he really deserved was 10 minutes
in an arena bathroom with Wes Unseld.
