I lived in Canberra for 4 years (I now live in Seattle), between 1985 and
1989, and followed the
Cannons. At that time they were pretty good (won a couple
championships). What's happened with them lately? How are they doing
this year? Who's on the team? It appears that Phil Smythe moved to
Adelaide.

Also, what are the new teams? Townesville, ???

Thanks for your replies.

The "unhappy" Canberra cannons.
that's what explains the team.

in your time, Steve Brehney would have been head coach, that was before
he head butted Damien Keogh *heh heh*

anyway, Brenhey left in 1991 from Canberra and head south to an ugly
state named Victoria, where he coaches the Geelong IOOF Supercats. Which
are a pretty kewl team, they boast Ex-la laker and "world title holder"
in the NBA that is, Adrian Branch.

off the topic, let me get back. He was replaced by Geelong Coach and now
current mens national coach Barry Barnes (who was assistant to Dr.
Adrian Hurley at the time he was appointed in 1992), so Barnes is pretty
kewl, he took the Cannons to the playoffs in 1992, BUT THAT WAS IT
they were quickly bundled out. That year they boast two big name
signing in Steve Hood and superstar Jason Reece, who vacated really
quickly at the end of 1992. Hood headed outta australia and Reece went
to play with the North Melbourne giants. Phil Smyth wanted to go back to
home town Adelaide and play for the 36ers.

Herb McEachin retired last year but only played very few games. So has
Jamie Kennedy. The only guy i'd guess youd remember is John Stelzer and
the palace!.

The Cannons are not a happy team, i think they are 2-5 and at the bottom
of the table. After 1989 when they went to the grand final with north
melbourne and lost, Willie Simmons left the cannons and at the end of
1991 or 1990, Emery Atkinson was kicked from the Cannons and now plays
in the Aussie CBA (or old SEABL)

they had some names there like Charlie Thomas but none were cracked up
to NBL standard.

Anyway, the Cannons manage to sign two superstars this years, it amazes
me!, Rodney ICE monroe, the greatest ever scorer for NC State and a
player for the Atlanta Hawks last year, and Fred Herzog, a star for
Fordham. Both are going to NBA training camps at the End of this year.

in 1991 the cannons missed out on the playoffs
1992 made the playoffs but lost early
1990 dunno

team
*lachlan armfield touted as a futre aussie point guard in the Phil
Smyth mode
*justin withers great aussie from Illawarra huge potential, rookie of
the year 1988
*rodney monroe the name says it all
*fred Herzog see above
*john stelzer and experienced campaigner
*simon cottrell big centre, gives them bulk inside
*matt witowski shining future australian talent
*mick barlow
*matt zauner
*adam kendrick
coach Barry Barnes, home Palace Canberra

lost: emery atkinson, willie simmons, steve hood, jason reese, phil
smyth, jamie kennedy, etc.

the end.

so which team shone while the cannons died?
