I recently dug up an old "Hoop Scoop" magazine from the summer of '88,
which had pre-summer camp All-Americans (High School). The First Team
was Bobby Hurley, Kenny Anderson, Allan Houston, Jimmy Jackson, and a guy
named Orlando Lightfoot, who was their #1 player in the USA.
I saw two years ago in a pre-season college magazine that he was
a predicted player of the year in the conference for some team like
Idaho, I think. Anyone know what became of this once-highly-touted
player who was supposedly better than these other four, now NBA players?

Just curious,

Pete

P.S. I'm assuming he was a JUCO first since he wasn't heard of for three
years after high school...maybe injured?

Someone else will chime in with a more complete rundown, but he was
a 20+ ppg scorer at Idaho (POY as a junior (and senior??)) but two
slow to make the NBA. Probably in Europe or CBA right now. His
junior year was 22.3 ppg 8.6 rpg and 32.5 % on threes, 6-7 235 lbs.

Yes, Lightfoot was a JUCO all american and then played for I think Idaho
in the Big Sky. He was a major league gunner, he could definitely put the
ball in the basket but he forgot about the "minor" aspects of the game
like passing, rebounding, guarding your man etc. Exciting to watch but he
had no conscience at all.

I think he originally committed to Oklahoma but even Billy Tubbs couldn't
get him in academically. Likely now playing overseas or in the CBA, has
the talent but not the discipline to play in the NBA.

I actually saw him play on espn once...around midnight, in some
idaho team...he scored like fifty points...the way i remember
it, he was about 6'7", and a great college power forward who
wouldn't be able to hack it in the pros, and iddn't have many
outside skills.

Played for Idaho I believe (maybe Boise St, NOT Idaho State though). He
is from Chattanooga, TN I believe too. Great all around player, could be
a major sleeper.

Once, when I was in Hawaii, on the island of Kauai, I met a mysterious old
stranger. He said he was about to die and wanted to tell someone about the
treasure. I said, "Okay, as long as it's not a long story. Some of us have a
plane to catch, you know." He started telling his story, about the treasure
and his life and all, and I thought: "This story isn't too long." But then,
he kept going, and I started thinking, "Uh-oh, this story is getting long."
But then, the story was over, and I said to myself: "You know, that story
wasn't too long after all." I forget what the story was about, but there was
a good movie on the plane. It was a little long, though.

Lightfoot was indeed a JUCO first -- at Hiwassee JC, where he averaged
21 ppg and 7 rpg. He did originally sign with Oklahoma.

After that, he went on to have a stellar career at Idaho, where he
finished as the school's all time leading scorer, surpassing Brian
Kellerman. His stats:

Lightfoot rewrote the record book at Idaho, finishing 1st all time in
points scored, scoring average, field goals made, field goals
attempted, 3-pt field goals made, 3-pt field goals attempted.
He also finished as the school's 2nd all-time leading rebounder
behind Dwight Morrison. Quite a college career, but mostly i
the shadows as he did it all in Moscow for the most part...
