Cal Abrams - Outfielder, played 1949-56. Lifetime .269 hitter. Abrams broke in
with the Brooklyn Dodgers and played for Brooklyn for his first three seasons.
He attracted a lot of attention as a Jewish, "Boy of Summer". Abrams retired to
Florida and was frequently seen at Jewish Federation events wearing his Dodger
uniform and signing autographs. He died in 1997.
Mel Allen - Hall of Fame announcer.
Lloyd Allen - Relief pitcher, played from 1969-75. Played for the Angels,
Texas, White Sox.
Ruben Amaro, Jr. - Major league outfielder from 1991-98. His father is Reuben
Amaro, Sr., former major leaguer (not Jewish) and his mother is Jewish. Amaro,
Jr. is now asst. general mgr. of the Phillies. Amaro, Jr. played for the
Indians, Phillies, and Angels. Career stats and picture on following link.
Amaro
Morrie Arnovitch - Outfielder with the Phillies (1936-41; 1946; with short
stays with the Reds and Giants). Hit .324 in 1939.
Brad Ausmus - ACTIVE PLAYER. Currently (2001) a catcher for the Houston
Astros.Formerly with Detroit. Ausmus's mother is Jewish. According to an
interview, relayed by a site visitor, he is now "exploring his Jewish roots".
But this may only have been a polite comment to the press. It is pretty clear
he does not identify much as Jewish. But we will note that Ausmus showed real
class in a 1999 ABC interview when he spoke about his ex-roommate, former
ballplayer Billy Bean, who is not Jewish, but recently came out of the "gay
closet". Ausmus showed the same spirit of tolerance that Hank Greenberg showed
to Jackie Robinson. Official Astro Bio
Jesse Baker - This guy is a footnote since he only was up for one year--he was
a short stop for the Washington Senators in 1919. But his real name was Michael
Myron Silverman. In 1919, playing under his real name would have been almost
impossible.
Brian Bark - Pitcher who had a "cup of coffee" with the Red Sox in 1995. (He
was up for a very short time.)
Ross Baumgarten - Pitcher, Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates (1978-82).
Grew up in suburban Chicago.
Jose Bautista - Pitcher from the Dominican Republic. Mother, Jewish. Bautista
was with a variety of clubs from 1988 though 1997. He may still be in the Mets'
farm system. A Jewhoo visitor told us that Bautista is a nice guy, an observant
Jew who tries to keep the Sabbath, and that Bautista gave the visitor a
baseball with a Mogen David.
Bo Belinsky - Major League pitcher in the 1960's. His best years were with the
Angels. He was a pretty talented pitcher, but he best known during his heyday
as a "wildman" who dated Hollywood starlets. Pitched a no-hitter in 1962.
Mother, Jewish. Father, not. Update: We have been reliably informed that
Belinsky's mother converted to Catholicism at the time of her marriage and that
Belinsky was raised Catholic.
Moe Berg - Good field; "no hit" catcher for the Boston Red Sox, others. But his
off field exploits and personal quirks have made him the subject of many
articles and at least two books. Berg spoke a dozen languages and read half a
dozen newspapers a day. The US government recruited him to take secret films of
Tokyo before WWII while he was on a pro baseball tour of Japan. The films were
used during WWII as guides for bombing targets. During WWII, Berg served in the
OSS (the forerunner of the CIA) and was assigned to to kill Werner Heisenberg,
the head of the Germans' atomic research program, if he concluded that the
Germans were took close to getting THE bomb. Berg attended a wartime lecture of
Heisenberg's in neutral Switzerland and concluded that killing Heisenberg was
not necessary. Berg, tutored in atomic physics, was able to conclude from
Heisenberg's lecture that the German program was not as advanced as the Allies
feared. There is a side exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame about Berg--he is
such a "wonderful footnote" to baseball history. (Berg played from 1923-39;
mostly with White Sox and Red Sox, also Senators, Cleveland, and Brooklyn.
Lifetime .243 hitter.)
Skip Bertman - Head coach of the Lousiana State University baseball team. He
lead the Tigers to five national championships in the 1990s. Bertman also
coached the 1996 US Bronze medal winning team at the Olympics. He has announced
that 2001 will be his last season. Bertham Annouces Retirement/Stats
Seymour Block - Known as "Cy". Played second base for the Cubs in '42, '45-47.
Appeared in one World Series. One of the outstanding rookies of 1942. He is the
author of a book about his time with the Cubs. And he has a lovely
granddaughter and grandson-in-law who called our attention to him.
Ron Blomberg - Baseball's first "designated hitter". Played for the Yankees
from 1969-76; one year for White Sox. Hit over .300 in two seasons. By the way,
for search engine users--"Ron Bloomberg" is not the correct spelling.
Blomberg's full career stats are on the following link. Stats
Sam Bohne - Born Samuel Arthur Cohen. Played shortstop and second base for
Cincinnati from 1921 to 1926 (612 games), with a brief stop in St. Louis in
1916 and a final tour with Brooklyn in 1926. Lifetime batting average .261
Lou Boudreau - Shortshop with a good batting eye who played for the Cleveland
Indians from 1938 to 1952. Father, not Jewish. Mother, Jewish. Lifetime, .295.
Hit over .300 four times. In Baseball Hall of Fame. Boudreau's parents divorced
when he was very young and he was raised by his father. His ties to anything
Jewish were minimal and it was not known--until long after he retired--that his
mother was Jewish.
Rod Carew - This great Panama born baseball player was long rumored to have
converted to Judaism following his marriage to a Jewish woman. He recently
confirmed he never converted in an interview with Minnesota-based American
Jewish World. A pity; not many great Jewish and Black players. His children
have been raised Jewish. Adam Sandler simply got it wrong in his Hannukah song.
Ron Cey - Former LA Dodger Star. His wife is Jewish and his children were
raised Jewish, including current minor leaguer Danny Cey. Jhoo has received, to
put it mildly, conflicting reports whether Ron has actually converted. Update:
We have received definitive information that Ron Cey never converted. Danny Cey
unexpectedly decided to retire in 2000.
Frank Charles - ACTIVE PLAYER. Currently playing Triple A ball with the Houston
Astros' New Orleans farm club. His mother is Jewish, his father is not. UPDATE:
Frank Charles just broke into the bigs. He was called up to the Astros line-up
at the beginning of September, 2000. He is listed on the roster as a
catcher.//Charles is back in the minors again at the beginning of 2001. He
played four games with the Astros in September, 2000.
Al Clark - Active major league umpire. In an amusing sidelight, Shawn Green
recently told an LA magazine that he came up to bat, in 1999, when Clark was
umpiring and Jesse Levis was catching. They all laughed; said, "Hi, yids"; and
since it was near the Jewish New Year-- wished each other a happy new year.
Tony Cogan - ACTIVE PLAYER Cogan, a left-handed pitcher, broke into the Kansas
City Royals roster at the start of the 2001 season. He played college ball with
Stanford and pitched in two college world series games. He only spent one year
in the minors and racked up impressive numbers. Cogan graduated from Highland
Park High School (Illinois) and we are reliably informed that his bar mitzvah
was held at Temple Am Sholom. A biography with stats are on the following link.
Stats
Andy Cohen - NY Giants player, 1926-29.
Sydney Cohen - Brother of Andy Cohen. Pitcher. 1934; '36-37. All years were
with the Washington Senators. He was 3-7 lifetime with a 4.54 ERA.
Jason Robert Crews - Graduated from Appalachian State Univ. He was named
Organizational Pitcher of the Month for June 1999 w/ the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He played this past 1999 Baseball Season for the Arizona Diamondbacks AA El
Paso Diablos Baseball team.
Harry Danning - New York Giants Catcher, 1933-42. Lifetime .285 hitter. His
brother Ike played 2 games for the St. Louis Browns (1928). Nickname was "Harry
the Horse". He was on the all-star team between 1938-40. Once hit for the cycle
(single, double, triple, hr. in one game).
Barney Dreyfuss - Owner of Pittsburgh Pirates, credited with organizing the
first World Series.
Tiby Eisen - Outfielder in the "All American Girls Professional Baseball
League", which was portrayed in the excellent film, "A League of Our Own". She
played for four teams in the Midwest btw. '44-52. She made the league all-star
team in '46. Grew up in an Orthodox home.
Harry Eisenstat - Pitcher for Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians between 1935
and 1942. He was the winning pitcher for the Tigers in game which Indians'
great Bob Feller pitched a no-hitter, but did not win.
Mike Epstein - Played first base from 1966-74, mostly for the (old) Washington
Senators and the Oakland A's. Epstein was a lifetime .244 hitter, but did hit
130 home runs. His best season was 1969, when he hit .274, with 30 home runs. A
Jhoo visitor tells us he saw the A's play shortly after the 1972 Munich killing
of Israeli athletes. Three players wore a black mourning armband: Epstein, Ken
Holtzman, and Reggie Jackson. Reggie was always a class act.
Jon Farber - Farber was a member of the Rochester, NY team which took second in
the tournament (World Series) to determine the champion of the 13 year old Babe
Ruth League. Farber's team finished second in the tournament. Farber was named
all-tournament left fielder.
Donald Fehr - Executive director of and counsel to the Major League Baseball
Players' Association.
August Foreman - Better known as "Happy" Foreman. Pitcher. 1924; 1926. Pitched
a total of 8 games with White Sox and Red Sox. Decent stats; no wins or losses.
Micah Franklin - ACTIVE PLAYER Outfielder who was briefly up in 1997 with the
Cardinals (17 games; hit over .300).His mother is Jewish, his father is not. In
1999, he played in Japan for the "Nippon Ham Fighters" (!) (What does the team
do in its spare time, try and make Japan kosher? )In 2000, he was injured at
the beginning of the season and came back to America. We have heard that he is
trying to get on an American team roster. There is an interesting profile of
Franklin in the following article from the No.Cal Jewish bulletin. "Ham
Fighting Man"
Murray Franklin - Shortstop for the Detroit Tigers, 1941-42.
Howie Gershberg - Minor league shortstop w/the NY Giants and minor league
pitcher with the Dodgers (1950's). Pitching coach St. John's Univ. (1980s).
Pitching coach Anaheim Angels (1987-present).
Dennis Gilbert - Ex-super agent who had the biggest stable of players in the
game. Jose Canseco, Barry Bonds, and Mike Piazza were but a few of his major
clients.
Joe Ginsberg - Catcher from 1948 to 1962 for a variety of clubs (Detroit,
Cleveland, KC, Baltimore, Chicago, Boston and Giants). Most active years 1951
and 1962, when he played 102 and 113 games, respectively. Most other seasons he
was his team's back-up catcher. Lifetime average .241. "Joe" was his nickname.
His full name was Myron Nathan Ginsberg. Ginsberg was known as a clubhouse
comedian according to one web based biography we saw. He also holds two
"footnote" records. He broke up Yankee Vic Raschi's near bid for a no-hitter in
1952 and he was the first catcher to catch a game for the Mets. He caught two
games for the Mets in the Mets (inaugural) 1962 season.
Keith Glauber - ACTIVE PLAYER Reds right-handed pitcher who broke in the 1999
season, but was sent back to the minors in 2000. UPDATE: Glauber was called
back to the Reds roster as of 9/6/00.//He is back in the minors at the start of
the 2001 season.
Al Goldis - Scouting co-coordinator for the Reds. He was a minor league
outfielder with the Reds in the 1960's.
Jonah Goldman - (1906-1980). Shortstop for Cleveland 1928, 1930 and 1931. Was
in 111 games in 1930, had 44 RBIs and hit .242. Lifetime average .224.
Greg Goosen - Played for Mets (4yrs) and Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers
(2yrs). Catcher and first baseman. Lifetime .241 hitter. Father, Jewish.
Mother, not.
Sid Gordon - Played in the majors from 1941 to 1955 for the Giants, Braves and
others. He hit 202 homers while hitting .283. He struck out rarely. His ratio
of bbs to ks was 731/356. He was a .985 fielder. Sid was so popular in his
native Brooklyn that he was given a "Sid Gordon" day in the Brooklyn Dodgers
stadium, Ebbets Field!
Shawn Green - ACTIVE PLAYER The best Jewish ballplayer of this generation and
already he has to be ranked among the best of all-time. In 1999, he accepted a
$84 million dollar contract with the LA Dodgers. With Toronto, in 1999, he hit
.309, 42hrs, 123 RBI's. In 2000, he had a disapointing season--especially the
second half when his production tailed off. But he played every game and hit
.269 with 24 home runs and 99 runs driven in. He has associated himself with
several Jewish charities including, "Jewish Big Brothers" and a Jewish
community sponsored literacy program that sends volunteers into the LA public
schools. The linked on-site profile was written before the 2000 season. Green
Profile
Hank Greenberg - Hall of Fame slugger who played for the Detroit Tigers for all
but his last season. Greenberg played from 1933 to early in the 1941 season and
from late in the season in 1945 to 1947. (The break in playing time was due to
his WWII army service.) He was a career .313 hitter and he had 7 seasons when
he drove in over 100 runs. His most famous year was 1938 when he hit 58 home
runs and was a serious challenger for Ruth's record. (While Greenberg says he
ran out of "gas", he was subject to a lot of "pitching around him" so a Jew
would not break Babe Ruth's 60 home run record.) Greenberg was the subject of a
critically acclaimed documentary, "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg"
(1999). After retirement, Greenberg went on to be a part owner for a time. But
he and Bill Veeck (not Jewish) were the only former owners to testify on behalf
of Curt Flood in the landmark suit to overturn the "reserve clause". (The only
former player to testify against Flood was Joe Gargiola. Who was also notorious
as one of the worst verbal baiters of Jackie Robinson. The editor of this site
couldn't resist "outing" smiley Joe for the hypocrite he is.) See also: Aviva
Kempner (directors); George Moriarty (righteous gentiles). Following is a good
recent piece on Greenberg that makes most of the important points about him.
Greenberg's career stats are on the second link. Add on: the last link is to
the official site for the film, "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg". It is
truely "Greenberg heaven". Everything is there. Including the famous Edgar
Guest poem about Greenberg. Hank Stats Film Site
Eric Helfand - Catcher who played for Oakland between 1993 and 1995. Not much
of a hitter.
Ken Holtzman - Excellent left-handed pitcher who played for the Cubs, Oakland,
and the Yankees (1965-1979). Like Koufax, Holtzman declined to pitch on the
High Holy Days. Pitched two no-hitters. 4-1, in World Series. Twice named to
the All-Star team. Full stats and playing history on link. Stats
Joel Horlen - 1961-72. Pitcher with the Chicago White Sox and the Oakland A's.
Horlen won a total of 116 games and pitched one no-hitter. His best year was
1967, he went 19-7 and lead the league in ERA (2.06). Horlen converted to
Judaism following his marriage to a Jewish woman. According to a published
article, he told Mike Epstein about his conversion at an oldtimers' game. Mike
said, "Welcome to the tribe."
David Jacobs - This is an "amateur listing" but an interesting one. Mr. Jacobs,
the son of Holocaust survivors, is a top baseball pitcher for the top
international adult amateur baseball league. In 1999, his team won the league
World Series and he pitched in one of the winning games. Former major league
pitcher, Bill Lee, is on his team. Mr. Jacobs is in the "masters" (over 50)
division.
Gabe Kapler - ACTIVE PLAYER. Played outfield for Detroit in 1999, dealt to the
Texas Rangers in 2000. His mother works at a Jewish pre-school. A good
ballplayer who shows real potential to fill in the gaps in the all-star Jewish
team lists. Kapler had a good season in 2000, hitting .302 with 14 home runs.
He really seems to be coming into his own. The following link gives his basic
bio and stats; it will update as the 2001 season progresses. (He was on the
disabled list as of the start of the 2001 season. His game statistics will seem
"light" until well into the season). Here's a Jewish sidelight on Kapler that
was recently reported in Jewish community newspaper, the NY Jewish Press. It
has some relevance in light of the recent widely-publicized Charlie Ward
incident with the Knicks. We will leave the name of the other player out since
he "has reformed". A former NY Yankees centerfielder had a reputation of
hectoring NY Jewish sportswriters that they "might go to hell--if they didn't
convert." He was traded to the Rangers and he tried to "convert" Gabe Kapler.
Kapler, it is reported, experienced some minor anti-Semitic incidents while in
the minors and he had shrugged them off. However, he decided to confront this
outfielder head-on. Kapler figured he needed some religious heavyweights to
help him discuss religion in an informed way. Therefore, he invited the player,
a rabbi, and his agent (who is a religious Orthodox Jew) to a restaurant. The
other player said that he came away with a "revelation" that he shouldn't
preach the way he had been preaching at Jews and stopped pursuing Kapler.
Kapler said he came away with a better knowledge of Judaism. Kapler
Stan Kasten - President of the Atlanta Braves organization.
Sandy Koufax - What can we say? Koufax holds a place so deep in the hearts of
Jewish baseball fans that words are not enough. In our humble opinion, he
narrowly edges at Hank Greenberg as the greatest Jewish baseball player ever
(there is no one even close to third place in such a race). Sandy was born in
Brooklyn and started as a "bonus baby" with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He showed
flashes of greatness until he came into his own in 1962. Like a lot of southpaw
fastball pitchers, it took him time to gain control over his pitches. Simply
put, from 1962 to 1966 he was the dominant pitcher in the major leagues. He
pitched four no-hitters. He was the MVP in 1963 and 1965. There are more stats
like this on the second following link. Koufax, as most people know, declined
to pitch in a 1965 World Series game that fell on Yom Kippur. This fact has
added to the "reverence" Jewish fans feel for him. Needless to say, Koufax was
a Hall of Fame first ballot selection. Two fun facts: Tommy LaSorda was sent to
minors to make room for him on the roster and he was on the same Brooklyn
basketball teams as Mets' co-owner Fred Wilpon. On the first link is an article
that analyzes, with Talmudic-like scholarship, Koufax's record of pitching on
Jewish holidays. It's fun, in a strange sort of way. Koufax/Holidays Koufax
Stats
Barry Latman - Born Arnold Barry Latman. Pitched for White Sox, Indians,
Angels, and Astros. (57-67). Journeyman pitcher, best season: 13-5. He was a
graduate of Fairfax High School, Los Angeles. In the '59 series, he played
against his fellow Jewish Fairfax graduates--Larry and Norm Sherry.
Al Levine - ACTIVE PLAYER. After years of struggling in the minors, Levine
broke into the Angels roster in the 1999 season and has established himself as
a pretty good middle reliever. Stats on link. They update as the season goes
on. Stats
Jesse Levis - ACTIVE PLAYER Catcher with the Brewers, Milwaukee, and Tampa Bay.
Levis broke into the majors in 1992. Levis spent the 2000 season with AAA
Buffalo recuperating from an injury. He is a a career .256 hitter. Levis is a
good catcher, he committed only 5 errors during his 8 years behind the plate.
He hit .333 in 1995, .285 in 1997, and .351 in 1998. The question is whether he
will make it up to the bigs again on a regular basis.
Marvin Lieb - Marvin Lieb was recruited by Branch Rickey to play on the 1948
Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a first baseman. His career was cut very short by an
injury. He was depicted on the cover of Life magazine on April 5, 1948 in a
story about Dodger Rookies. Marvin died in FL on 2/5/00.
Mike Lieberthal - ACTIVE PLAYER Current Phillies catcher. His father is Jewish;
but he was not raised Jewish. He is unquestionably a talented player with good
power and a strong throwing arm. He made the all-star team in 2000. (We just
wish he was "more" Jewish). Profile and stats on link. They will update as the
season progresses. Stats
Lou Limmer - First baseman for the old Philadelphia A's. Played in the '50s.
Andrew Lorraine - ACTIVE PLAYER Left-handed pitcher who has played for the
Angels, Chicago, and ended up with Cleveland at the end of the 2000 season. His
career stats to date have not been impressive. His father emigrated from
England and Lorraine's uncle is an orthodox rabbi in England. The family's
original name is Levin. His grandfather, who served in the British Army in
Alsace-Lorraine, liked the name "Lorraine" and changed it.
Bob Lurie - Former owner of the SF Giants (now owned by a group headed up by
Peter MacGowan, heir to the Safeway fortune). A very sweet guy who bought the
team to save them from re-location out of San Francisco. Always soft-spoken.
Elliott Maddox - African-American outfielder who played from 1970 to 1980. He
played mostly for the Yankees and the Mets (3 seasons with each team). Two
years with the Rangers. Lifetime .26l hitter. Two .300 seasons with the
Yankees. Convert to Judaism.
Jason Marquis - ACTIVE PLAYER Pitcher out of Manhasset, LI (where he was a
member of the National Honor Society). Highly touted Braves' minor leaguer.
Reached Double A ball in 1999 at the age of 20. Throws the ball in the mid 90
mph. range. Derailed by minor injuries in 1999, lets hope he comes back this
season. UPDATE: Marquis has made the bigs for the 2000 season. He is up with
the Atlanta Braves. Correction: He is from Staten Island, not Manhasset, Long
Island.//He is on the Braves roster as a relief pitcher at the start of the
2001 season. Stats on link. They will update as the season progresses. Marquis
Mike Milchin - Milchin was a star pitcher with Clemson University. He was up in
the majors briefly in 1995 and 1996 with the Twins and the Orioles,
respectively (3 games total). Milchin was a member of the US Olympic team which
won a gold medal in the 1988 Olympics (baseball was a demonstration sport that
year). Milchin's father is Jewish, his mother is not Jewish.
Norm Miller - Outfielder, Houston Astros,Atlanta Braves, 1965-74. Executive
with Mets and Astros. Casey Stengel once said, Norm Miller had the sweetest
swing in baseball.
Marvin Miller - We have long had Miller up in our lawyers category, but he
really should be cross-listed. Miller, a former lawyer for the Steelworkers'
union, became Executive Director of the baseball players' union when the
association was a joke, and the prospects were dim. He got the players to stick
together, got contract arbitration and got the arbitrator to throw out the
reserve clause, which had held the players in servitude for a 100 yrs. He then
out-lawyered the owners at every turn regarding free agency. Its an old story,
if you stick together and have smart leadership, you sometimes get what you are
worth in the market.
Buddy Myer - Second baseman who played mostly for the Washington Senators
(1925-41). Lifetime .303; nine .300 seasons.
Sam Nahem - A Brooklyn College star pitcher, he had a brief career in the
majors--pitching a limited number of games over four seasons ('38,
41-42,'48)--with Brooklyn, Cardinals, Phillies. He was also a lawyer.
Billy Nash - Played 1884-1898. Regular 3B. Mostly Boston, National League.
Lifetme batting avg. .275. Sources differ on whether Nash was Jewish. We put
him up for informational purposes.
David Newhan - ACTIVE PLAYER Currently a back up second baseman with the
Philadelphia Phillies. He broke in with the Padres in 1999 and was up for a
brief time. Newhan again made the Padres in 2000, but was dealt to the Phillies
in September, 2000 and played some games last September with Philly. His father
is Los Angeles area sportswriter Ross Newhan. A baseball journalist was kind
enough to share her source with us. Thanks. Official team biography, photo, and
stats on the following link. Newhan
Jeff Newman - Played 438 games as a catcher for the Oakland A's. Currently a
third base coach for the Indians.
Yaron Peters - All-state (California) third baseman. He plays for Cuesta
College in San Luis Obispo.
Lipman Pike - The first professional baseball player was a Jewish ballplayer.
He acheived this status in 1866 when he accepted $20 a week to play for the
Philadephia Athletics. A good hitter and baserunner, he played for the Reds in
1876, the first year the National League was in existence. Born 1845, in New
York. He also managed. His five season National League average was .306, with 5
home runs, 36 doubles, 16 triples and 88 RBIs.
Jake Pitler - Brooklyn Dodgers First Base Coach, 1950's. Played for Pittsburgh,
1917-18. Second base and outfield.
John Powers - Current Minor Leaguer. Now Double A with the San Diego Padres'
Mobile, Alabama team. He's an infielder. In 1998, he was a Double A all-star.
Out with injuries in 1999. Father, not Jewish. Mother, Jewish.
Scott Radinsky - ACTIVE PLAYER Currently a relief pitcher for the St. Louis
Cardinals. His mother is Jewish. His parents divorced when he was young and his
mother has been quoted as saying that she regrets not sending him to Hebrew
school. He has expressed no interest in his Jewish side.
Jimmy Reese - Born James Hymie Solomon, in San Francisco. Played for the
Yankees, from 1930-31. Cardinals in 1932. Second baseman. He was Babe Ruth's
roommate. Reese has said this meant he usually roomed with Ruth's suitcase,
because the Babe liked to "party". Reese played in the Pacific Coast League for
12 seasons, sandwiched around his time with the Yankees and was a coach with
the Angels for decades after his retirement as a player. He is in the Angels'
team hall of fame.
Jerry Reinsdorf - Owner of the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls.
Consistently left off voters' lists for "nice guy" of the year and Michael
Jordan's gift lists.
Ed Reulbach - A great pitcher in the first two decades of the 20thc. Pitched
mostly for the Cubs. Reulbach has long been listed as Jewish in most books
about famous Jews in sports, etc. However, recent research, as reported by
"Total Baseball", states he is not Jewish (other notable "assumed, but not"
include George Stone and Benny Kauff). If anyone out there has info that
contradicts/confirms this report--contact us. One person has--a gentleman named
Reulbach who is researching any biographical reference he can find to other
Reulbachs. He says he has never encountered a single Jewish person named
"Reulbach" among all the Reulbachs he has researched. Final nail: A friend of
Ed Reulbach's family contacted us. He was Catholic and went to Notre Dame.
Dave Roberts - Pitched for Padres, Astros, Tigers, Cubs, Mets, Seattle. Best
season 17-11; 103 lifetime wins w/some weak teams. Father, Jewish. Mother, not.
Saul Rogovin - AL Pitcher (Tigers and White Sox). Led league in ERA in 1951.
After retirement he became a schoolteacher in Brooklyn, NY.
Goody Rosen - Born George Goodwin Rosen. Canadian. Played for the Dodgers
between 1937-39; 1944-46. Outfielder. Lifetime .291. Told Jon Blank, who runs
the "Jewish Baseball Western Wall of Fame", that "his proudest accomplishment
was being the only Canadian Jew to ever play in the majors". Also in Canadian
Baseball HOF.
Al Rosen - 1953 American League MVP (by unanimous vote). Cleveland Indians.
General Manager of SF Giants in the 80's and early '90's. Rosen hit over .300
in 3 seasons. Came w/ in less than a percentage pt. of winning battle title in
'53, had he done so, he would have won the triple crown. Nickname "Flip" from
the way he pitched softball. Was a college boxing champ, and used these skills
dealing with some anti-semites in baseball.
Steven Rosenberg - Pitcher who was with the White Sox btw. 1988-91; part of his
last season with San Diego.
Harry Rosenberg - Harry played 9 games for the NY Giants in 1930. His brother
Lou played 3 games for the White Sox in 1923. But their name leaves little
guess work about their background.
Johnny Rosenblatt - Former mayor of Omaha, Nebraska and minor league ballplayer
who lead the renovation of what is now called the "Johnny Rosenblatt" stadium.
The College World Series is now held there annually.
Max Rosenfeld - 1931-3 Brooklyn Dodgers. Outfielder.
Wayne Rosenthal - Pitcher, Texas Rangers, 1991-92.
Marv Rotblatt - Marv Rotblatt, a native Chicagoan, pitched for the Sox in 1948,
1950 and 1951, compiling a 4-3 lifetime record. He was a little southpaw,
standing only 5'8".
Jared Roth - An amateur listing--but we couldn't resist. Jared, who is from
Rochester, NY, was named All Tournament Utility League Infiedler. The

finished second in the Tournament.
Larry Rothschild - First and present manager of the new expansion team "The
Tampa Bay Devil Rays". Rothchild was a successful coach w/other teams, incl.
the Marlins. He was a pitcher who appeared in 14 games w/the Tigers in 81-82.
Father, Jewish. Mother, not Jewish.
Mickey Rutner - A third baseman who played eleven games for the old
Philadelphia A's in 1947. A visitor who met Mickey relates this story. Mickey
couldn't stay up because the A's had a first class third baseman already. He
asked manager/owner Connie Mack to trade him. Mack said he couldn't do that
because it would come back to haunt the A's--Rutner was too good. Rutner asked
Hank Greenberg to speak to Mack--Greenberg said it was hopeless--Mack wouldn't
lift a finger to help a Jew.
Al Schacht - Had a short career as a pitcher with the Washington Senators
(1919-21). Came back as "The Clown Prince" of Baseball, clowing around at
"Old-Timers" games, etc. This title was sometimes also held by Max Patkin,

('65-'67); and the Mets from '68-'71. Outfielder. Hit .300 (best season by far)
in the Amazin' Mets Amazin' '69 Championship Year.
Norm Sherry - Catcher and pitching coach, played mostly for the LA Dodgers, one
year for the Mets (Active as a player btw. 1959-1963.) Larry Sherry's brother.
He was a better pitching coach than a player. Generally regarded as one of the
best in the game.
Larry Sherry - Pitcher for the LA Dodgers, Detroit Tigers and Cal. Angels
(1958-68.) Won two critical World Series games for the LA Dodgers in '59.
Lifetime ERA 3.67. Brother of Norm Sherry. He and Norm (and Barry Latman) were
all graduates of Fairfax High School, Los Angeles.
Steve Sigler - Steve Sigler is the head of the MSBL, the Mens Senior Baseball
League. The league is an amateur league for players 25 and older. Sigler is
also serving as the coach of the American junior baseball team (14-16 years
old) that will represent the United States at the July, 2001 Maccabiah games in
Israel. Sigler's son, Brian, is now assistant coach of the University of
Michigan baseball team. Steve's daughter is Jamie Lynn-Sigler, who plays Meadow

Moses Solomon - New York Giant who played two games in 1923. Remembered for the
nickname Mgr. John McGraw gave him: "The Rabbi of Swat".
Dolly Stark - Prominent National League umpire, 1930's.
Ethan Stein - ACTIVE PLAYER Stein, a right-handed relief pitcher, played single
A ball with the Wilmington club (KC affiliate) in 2000. We will update him on
2001 soon. There is a great journal piece on the web by Stein that he wrote in
2000. We usually don't quote this long an excerpt, but Stein has written very
eloquently about issues that often face Jews in professional sports and in
other places where they are a small minority. Specifically, the awkward and
sometimes offensive attempts to "evangelize" Jews and the assumption that
everyone is a Christian and should be happy to be to be part of a "captive
audience" for Christian preaching. Stein writes in his 2000 journal, "There was
something that occurred two nights later that several of my teammates and I did
not appreciate, though. That was a prayer on the field just before our game was
slated to begin. It was in honor of it being National Prayer Day. A preacher
spoke into his microphone about Jesus, before telling all in attendance, both
players and fans, to repeat after him the Lord's Prayer. The prayer ended with
him yelling, as if at a revival, "in JESUS' name we pray! Amen!" As I've
written before, I am Jewish. I have gotten used to Christians coming up to me
in private and attempting to give me their testimonies. In all honesty, that is
old hat, as it has happened to me fairly regularly since high school. But it
has never bothered me. I have always felt that since these were private
matters, I could always just turn my back and walk away. This prayer on the
field was different. We players had to be out there. We couldn't just turn and
walk away. Religion, essentially, was forced upon us. I don't believe that this
was right. I have no problem with people being religious. I am very religious,
as I feel that I have a good relationship with God. But religion should be a
personal thing. Let people live the way they want to live. Don't try to cram
things down their throats. That is what happened here. Besides, I am sure that
there had to be some non-Christians in the stands. I wonder how they felt about
it. I know that the three Jews on the Blue Rocks found the entire thing
inconsiderate and bordering on offensive. As a result, to even things up, so to
speak, we are attempting to bring a rabbi to a game next week. We figure he can
throw out the first pitch, and then make his way up into the radio booth where
he will proceed to lean out of the window during the seventh inning stretch and
sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in Hebrew." The full piece is on link. 2000

Steve Stone - 1980 American League Cy Young winner. Baltimore Orioles.
Currently a sportscaster. His very promising pitching career was cut short by a
severe arm injury.
Lon Strickler - For 20 years, Mr. Strickler has furthered the knowledge of our
Baltimore/Washington D.C. youth in the subject of Jewish sports heroes,
especially major league baseball players.(Editor's note-We put this entry up as
a tribute to the many Jewish sports afficiandos who pass on the knowledge of
Lipman Pike, Hank Greenberg, et. al., to new generations)
Albert Von Tilzer - Well, we could hardly have a baseball category without
mentioning that the composer of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" was Jewish. Von
Tilzer wrote the music. Jack Norworth, whom we are pretty sure was not Jewish,
wrote the lyrics. Neither fellow had seen a pro game when they wrote the song
in 1908. Von Tilzer finally went to one in 1928 and Norworth went to his first
game in 1942.
Phil Weintraub - Outfielder and first baseman who played for the Giants, Reds,
and Phillies (1933-38; '44-45). Lifetime .295/444 games. Referred to as,
"Fumblin' Phil", in a funny Bruce Jay Friedman short story, "When You Are
Excused, You are Excused".
Walt Weiss - NOT JEWISH. THE EDITOR OF THIS SITE WILL GO CRAZY IF THIS INQUIRY
COMES UP AGAIN. He is not Jewish! We have 3 sources incl.--no kidding--a
federal wiretap. And Pete Rose isn't Jewish, either. Not even a little.
Fred Wilpon - Co-owner of the NY Mets. When in high school, he played on
Brooklyn basketball teams with Sandy Koufax.
Steve Yeager - World Series MVP, catcher for the LA Dodgers, from 1972 through
1986. A very good player whose career stats do not really convey how valuable
he was. Yeager converted to Judaism after marrying daughter of Holocaust
survivor and a visitor relates that the poor guy was circumcised at 40 (ouch!)
In 1999, two of Yeager's children were at the Jewish Day Care Center which was
attacked in Los Angeles. Fortunately, neither were injured.
Kevin Youkilis - Second team All American for University of Cincinnati year
2000. First team Conference USA. Holds single season home run record at UC.
Career leader in on base %, walks, runs scored and many other records.
Eddie Zosky - ACTIVE PLAYER Milwaukee shortshop who was up for a little time in
1998, but is currently back in the minors. His father is not Jewish. His mother

but he has yet to appear in a game.//Back in the minors as of the start of the
2001 season.

corporate attorney and counsel to the Brewers. She is Bud Selig's daughter.

member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. The first link is to Red's enshirement
in the NY Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. The second links are more descriptive and
describe the importance of the winningest coach in NBA history. Auerbach was

local sports legend, Scott Moscovich. 2nd team All-American at Illinois was
drafted #13 by the Baltimore Bullets. After a contract dispute and a stint in
the U.S. Army decided to make aliyah. Enjoyed a successful international career
and helped Israeli basketball immeasurably.
Larry Brown - Larry Brown has been just about everywhere and done just about
anything anyone can do in basketball. He was an All American player with
University of North Carolina (played 1960-63). Played five years in the old
ABA. He was part of the gold medal winning US team at the 1964 Olympics. He has
coached almost too many teams to count. Currently the head coach of the
Philadelphia '76ers. Full biography and career stats on link. Brown Bio
Howard Carl - All-state basketball player for Chicago's Von Steuben High.
All-American player at DePaul U. (Held school scoring record until broken by
Mark Aquirre.) In B'nai Brith"s Chicago's Jewish Hall of Fame.
Mark Cuban - Always described as the "most visible owner in the NBA". He owns
the Dallas Mavericks. Cuban was born into a fairly poor family in Pittsburgh.
His company pioneered the technology of bringing audio and video over the
internet. Yahoo bought him out and he was left with a bundle (as were a large
number of employees). Some people like his "hands-on" ownership style and some
people don't. Frankly, he seems to act like a lot of relatively sophisticated
fans would act like if they had the money to buy an NBA franchise. Sometimes
they would be jerks; and sometimes they would show some smarts. In any event,
Cuban is a lot more fun to argue about than some faceless corporate owner. Too
bad we all cannot afford to indulge our fantasies. He will probably calm down
in time. Even Steinbrenner is practically a pussycat these days.
Norm Drucker - Top pro referee in the NBA and the ABA for decades. Played pro
ball in the 1940s. Drucker Bio
Nolan Fine - Current NBA referee. Mr. Fine has been officiating in the NBA
since 1988.
Larry Fleisher - Attorney who helped organize the NBA players association and
served, for twenty five years, as the general counsel to the association.
Fleisher took no salary during his years (1962-88) in this position. The
players association negotiated pensions for players and free agency. All of
this was accomplished without a players' strike. Fleisher died in 1989. He was
inducted in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a "contributer" in 1991. Bio

Jerry Fleishman - Played on first NBA championship team with the Philadelphia
Warriors in 1947. Ended career with the New York Knicks in 1953.
Eddie Fogler - Head Basketball coach, University of South Carolina. Played
freshman ball at North Carolina for Larry Brown
Don Forman - Second team All-American with NYU in 1948. Played guard. Also
played pro ball with the Lakers. Why are they called the Lakers? Because they
were in Minneapolis for a time.
Marty Friedman - Max "Marty" Friedman was one of the greatest defensive guards
in the early history of professional basketball (1910-27). He went on to coach
several teams and was instrumental in making basketball a popular international
game and an Olympic sport. He is in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame

Harry Glickman - The founder and long time general manager of the NBA's
"Portland Trailblazer." Active in the Jewish community, he attends many of
Portland's Jewish events.
Tamir Goodman - Goodman was a media sensation in 1999. He was billed as "the
Jewish Jordan". He is an Orthodox Jewish kid who was (then) playing basketball
for a Maryland Jewish religious school. He was all set to go to the University
of Maryland. However, he declined to go there because it became apparent that
the University could not easily honor his need not to play or practice on the
Sabbath. He went, instead, to Towson State, Maryland. Unfortunately, it does
not appear that his early promise will be fulfilled. He only grew to 6'3 and he
certainly has not been a dominant player in college ball. It doesn't look like
we will see a guy wearing a yalmulke in the NBA. Goodman College Stats
Joel Gotthoffer - Shikey was the reputedly the highest-paid professional
basketball player in the pre-NBA days. (Before WWII). Among the teams he played

Edward Gottlieb - Basketball coach of the Philadelphia Warriors from 1947-55.
Owner of the club from 1952-62. In Basketball Hall of Fame. Gottlieb was called

for Milwaukee, Kansas City, and for the NY Knicks (1982-86). After retirement,
he worked for the Knicks in a variety of capacities--rising to General Manager

University. During his junior year, he was all-league (Pacific Coast Athletic
Association). During his senior year, 1977-78, he was again all-league and was
league player of the year. Kramer played for the Phoenix Suns from 1978-79
until 1983, when he retired. His first three seasons were his best. He played
every game, averaged around 5 points per game, and was a strong rebounder. The
Suns made the play-offs all three seasons.
Rudy Larusso - Born in 1937 in Brooklyn. Larusso, a forward, was a star

Buddy Baer - Brother of Max Baer. Lost heavyweight title fight to Joe Louis.
Giant in size, he appeared in over a dozen films including "Quo Vadis".
Max Baer - Heavyweight champion 1934-35. Fought with a Star of David on his
shorts. There has always some dispute whether he was really Jewish; or whether
it was a marketing ploy. During Baer's era, a boxer could get a strong
following by claiming to be one ethnicity or another. Claiming to be Jewish
helped bring in Jewish fans in the major cities where most fights were held.
The consensus of most Jewish boxing mavens is that only Baer's paternal
grandfather was Jewish. (Although you will find Baer described as Jewish in
countless sources). Father of Max Baer, Jr. who played "Jethro" on "Beverly
Hillbillies". One note: Whatever Baer "really was" it was probably a good thing
that he fought with a Star of David on his shorts. In the 1930s, Jews needed,
perhaps more than ever, the moral support provided by athletic champions.

time. Reputed to have fought some 1,309 bouts.
Keith Holmes - Current world middleweight champion. This entry is for
informational purposes only. Holmes is a member of a "black Hebrew" group. As
noted elsewhere, there are many African-Americans, and other peoples of
"color", who are Jews and accepted as such by all other Jews. However, Holmes'
group is not accepted as Jewish by any mainstream Jewish group and, in fact,
contains strong elements of Christianity. A small number of the group Holmes is
associated with settled in Israel in 1969. (They came on tourist visas and
stayed) To make a long story short, a confusing and politically charged
situation was finally resolved by allowing them to stay as temporary permanent
residents. After 30 years they have become part of the mosaic of Israeli
society. Only time will tell whether they will formally join mainstream Judaism
through conversion or assimilation. The links take you to a quasi-official
statement on the history of the group and an article on Holmes in the Jewish
press. (Addition--to end the same questions--based on what we know--which isn't
complete--welterweight champ Zab Judah also appears to belong to a group that
calls itself Jewish, but whose theology is not recognizably Jewish by even the
most "liberal" standards. We take a very liberal view on Jewhoo on listing
people. If they have a Jewish parent we usually list them. If they have a
Jewish grandparent and practice Judaism, we list them. We do try to tell the
visitor how the person identifies. However, with all due respect to Zab Judah,
a great fighter, we have to draw some lines. And one of those lines is that we
unequivocally maintain that someone is not Jewish, by religion, if that person
practices a religion (whatever it is called) that includes strong elements of
Christianity. Granted, Jewhoo does list some persons who do practice
Christianity. However, these persons have an "ethnically" Jewish parent.
Listing persons with one Jewish parent who practice Christianity was a
difficult editorial decision. It is based on the odd status of "Jewishness" as
both a religion and an ethnicity. If Zab Judah practiced something recognized
as mainstream Jewish practice, we would give him an entry. If he was
"ethnically" Jewish, i.e., if he had a parent who was generally accepted as
Jewish by most Jews,--again we would list him. However, he does not appear to
fall into either of these categories. If anyone has information on Judah that
contradicts what we have gathered from several sources--please inform us right
away. Thank you.) Status in Israel Holmes Profile

Robert Kahn - Who is he? He is the real-life model for Robert Cohn, the
Princeton boxing champion in Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises". In the book,
Cohn is criticized for fighting for "the wrong reason". The right reason being
the joy of athletic competition or some other mystical Hemingway macho stuff.
The real Robert Cohn never made it to Paris and, in later years, hardly anyone
remembered him from his Princeton days. He was a quiet young man who didn't
want to have to take an insult from anyone. Therefore, he studied boxing and
became Princeton middleweight champ in the 1920's. He apparently never had a
college fight outside the gym.

was undefeated over the next 11 years except for a disqualification loss to
Jack Britton for Welterweight title in 1922. Leonard was beating Britton when
he inexplicably fouled him in the 13th round. After his retirement in 1925 he
returned to the ring in 1931 and won 18 out of his next 19 fights (1 draw)
until he was knocked out by Jimmy McLarnin October 7, 1932. Overall record,
89W(71KO), 1D, 5L, 115ND.
Artie Levine - Middleweight (1941-1949). Most famous fight was with Sugar Ray
Robinson (11/6/46) in which he almost KO'ed Robinson in the 5th round. A long
count might have saved Robinson. Robinson managed to rebound and knock out
Levine in the 10th round, but he never could remember the fight after the 5th
round. It has been claimed that Robinson said no one ever hit him harder than
Levine did in the 5th round of that fight. Levine never got a title shot. His
overall record was 50W(36KO), 6D, 15L.
Battling Levinsky - One of the few guys known mostly known just by his
nickname. He was light heavyweight champion between 1917 and 1925. Born Barney

to have fought over 400 professional fights, although his early years'
engagements are not recorded. The guy loved to fight.
King Levinsky - Heavyweight (1928-1939). 79W(41KO), 7D, 33L. During his career
he beat the likes of Jimmy Slattery, Tommy Loughran, Primo Carnera, Jack
Sharkey, Leo Lomski.
Ted Lewis - Known as Ted "Kid" Lewis. World Welterweight Champ, 1915-16;
1917-1919. Born Gershon Mendelhoff in England. Tough, hard-hitting fighter from
London's East End. Held many British and European titles. Lifetime: 170-30-14.
There is an interesting story about Lewis on the following link. But it is too
good not to share the heart of it here--even though the excerpt is a little
longer than we normally use. In 1929, Lewis accepted a position as a bodyguard
and physical trainer for British politician Oswald Mosley and his "New Party".
Mosley's party began as a "populist", but anti-Communist party that was
non-racist. However, by 1932, Mosley became a follower of anti-Semitic fascism.
Lewis came to Mosley to find out if the rumors of Mosley adopting anti-Semitism
were true. Mosley said that they they were true and outlined his plans to Lewis
(TK). The account reads: "Mosley almost smiled at TK's naivety. 'Yes' [He was
anti-Jewish]. Then he rose from his chair and told TK in measured tones ...his
full plans and began to explain there aims. TK's face was dead white. Boxing
fans who had seen him fight would have intrepreted the danger signs. ...Mosley
kept on talking and then eyed TK as if to gauge the effect of his words on TK.
Until then TK had not moved. Then, like lightning, he struck with an open hand
across Mosley's face, sending him and his chair crashing against the wall. The
two brown-shirted men came round the desk and grappled with TK. He ducked under
the man's arms and shot a short right hand to his jaw, sending him to the
floor, out to the world. ...TK hit him (the second man) with a left hook and
dropped to the floor like a sack of potatoes. ...TK took my hand and we walked
down the stairs past the two guards at the front door. About twenty yards up
the street, TK told me to wait a minute. ...he walked back to the entrance,
mounted the steps and postitioned himself between the two guards. He eyed them
for two or three seconds, and then, like lightning, swung a left hook at one,
spun around with a right hook to the other, and calmly stepped over both. He
walked down the steps and joined me, grinning from ear to ear." Postscript:
Oswald Mosley was jailed as a security risk during WWII and spent the war in
jail. His union of British Fascists never acquired much of a following. But, he
does show up in a number of historical/literary references because he was
married to one of the famous Mitford sisters. Two were fascists; one was a
communist for a time (Jessica); and the fourth--novelist Nancy, mostly steered
clear of extreme politics. Full story with Pictures

world championship when he defeated George Chip, then champion, who was
standing in for a fight scheduled with his brother Joe Chip. He Ko'd George
Chip in the first round. He was thereafter derogatorily referred to as the
"cheese champion" for being a light hitter who lucked into the championship,
and for fighting many No Decision bouts (like most fighters of the day).
Actually, he may have fought as many as 137 fights before losing for the first
time in 1917 in a championship fight with Mike O'Dowd. Not too shabby, cheesy
or no.
Daniel Mendoza - Sephardic Jew who became a famous boxing champion of England
in the 18th Century. He did for English Jews what Jackie Robinson did for
African-Americans two centuries later. Mendoza gave them pride in a champion
who represented his people. Mendoza is credited with introducing "scientific
boxing" to the sport (called, believe it or not, "the Jewish School of Boxing",
during this period). A Mendoza descendant was actor Peter Sellers. Sellers'
mother, whose name was Mendoza, was Jewish. Sellers's son wrote that Peter was
somewhat fascinated by his ancestor and by the "yellowing" prints of the
champion that had been passed down in the Mendoza family. Sellers and his
ancestor, his son wrote, bore a striking physical resemblance to one and other.
There is a short biography of Mendoza on the following link. Mendoza

became the family's support. He was a war hero and becamed addicted to morphine
for his wounds. Sucessful fight back from addiction was made into the movie
"Monkey On My Back". Born Barnet Rashofsky.
Mike Rossman - Won WBA Light Heavyweight title in 1978 and wore a Star of David
on his trunks. However, we have received very credible information that only
his stepmother was Jewish. He is in fact a non-Jewish Italian-American and his

accurate.
Shamil Sabyrov - Won Olympic gold medal for USSR as light-flyweight in 1980.
Dutch Sam - (Samuel Elias) 1775-1816. International Boxing Hall of Fame. The
second great Jewish fighter, after Mendoza, though in his weight class probably

Allie Stoltz - Lightweight contender (1937-1946) Lost controversial title fight

rounds. To most observers Stolz won the fight. 73W, 2D, 10L.
Lew Tendler - Hall of Famer, who unfortunately had to beat Benny Leonard for
the World Light title, and didn't quite make it. Had Leonard dazed and on the
ropes (figuratively speaking), but Benny outsmarted him (1923). Then barely
lost 15 round decision for World Welterweight title to a heavier Mickey Walker
in 1924. Considered by some the best southpaw fighter of his day in any
division.

was all pro several times. He died in 1992. He attributed his death, from
cancer, to the anabolic steroids he started taking in 1969 to build up his
muscle mass. Alzado's father was Puerto Rican and not Jewish. His mother was
Jewish and he was bar mitzvah. A visitor pointed us to a site that has a
picture of Alzado's grave. There is a cross on the headstone. We do not know if
this cross reflected Alzado's beliefs at the time of his death or it something
his widow decided to do without his prior approval. Editor's note: you will
read varying stories on Alzado's religious background. We have our information
from an impeccable source. Interesting article on Alzado on following link.
Alzado
Harris Barton - Now retired former all-Pro Offensive Lineman for the San
Francisco 49'ers. For obvious reasons, did not participate in pre-game prayer
warm-ups of some other players.
Mitch Berger - Punter for the Minnesota Vikings. I'm not sure about him, but he
was mentioned in an article that was critical of on-field religious displays,
like having all the players gather after the game for a prayer cirlce. The
writer asked how Willie Green felt about this, being a Muslim, and then Mr.
Berger, being Jewish. Worth checking on. And he's a hell of a punter too! (Ed.
Note: We are posting this entry unedited. If anyone knows for sure on Berger,
contact us) UPDATE: WE have got definite information that he is NOT Jewish.
Sorry, sports fans.
Alex Bernstein - Lineman for the NY Jets last season, cut. Picked-up by Browns
and just cut. Looking to be picked-up again.
Art Bluethenthal - (1891-1918) Princeton center. All-Amer. 1911-1912. After
graduation became coach. Joined American Field Service in WWI, served at battle
of Verdun with 129th Inf. Awarded Croix de Guerre with star. Joined French
Foreign Legion Air, was killed, awarded 2nd Croix de Guerre (but with palm).
Norman Brama - Former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles. He owned the team from
1984 to 1994. He was not loved, to say the least. Known for his tight-fisted
style. But no one ever loses on an NFL franchise and he sold the team for
almost three times what the paid for it. His wealth principally comes from
Florida car dealerships.
Norman Braman - Owner of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1985 to 1993. Leader and
contributor to the Miami Jewish Community.
Noah Cantor - Defensive Tackle for the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian
Football League.
Al Davis - Former coach who became the owner of the Oakland Raiders. Moved them
to Los Angeles and back to Oakland. The editor of this site lives in the Bay
Area and was not happy when the Raiders moved. But, Al Davis is clearly one of
the greatest figures in the history of football and deserves his place in the
Football Hall of Fame. He hired players and coaches on the basis of ability.
Not race or ethnicity. He didn't talk, he acted. He put black players into
certain positions years ahead of other owners. He hired black and Hispanic
coaches. It is no accident that four players have asked Davis to introduce them
when they were admitted to the Football Hall of Fame. Almost to a man, his
former players and coaches speak of Davis as someone who was color blind in the
best way--he found people who could win and he built an astonishing number of
great teams.
Brad Edelman - Played center for the New Orleans Saints in the 1980's.
Jay Fiedler - Currently (8/00) the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins.
Formerly with the Jaguars, Vikings, and Eagles. Set school passing records at
Dartmouth. He grew up in Oceanside, LI and according to our source was a math
genius in high school. Calling numbers obviously presents no difficulties for
him. Fiedler is, by the way, a distant cousin of the late Arthur Fiedler, the
famous conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. His grandfather was Arthur's
second cousin.
Leonard Frank - University of Minnesota tackle. All-Amer 1st team 1911.
John Frank - World Champion SF 49'ers Tight End (NFL)

pass, kick). Early College Hall of Famer. Played pro ball (1927-1934) for
Cleveland Bulldogs, Detroit Wolverines, NY Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers (yes
there was a football team). All-Pro, 1927-1931. After pro ball went into
coaching
Steve Furness - Defensive tackle. Played for Steelers from 1972 to 1980. On
four championship teams. He was a convert to Judaism. Died 2/10/2000 of a heart
attack at age 49.
Sid Gillman - A very good college player who became a legend as a coach.
Gillman is considered one of football's great offensive innovators. He is
credited with the idea of using game and practice film for coaching; using the
two-platoon system; and he was the first person to place players' names on the
back of their jerseys. In the early 1930s, Gillman was an All American mention
(offensive end) with Ohio State and was co-captain of the team. He coached the
University of Cincinnati for five years and compiled an incredible record. In
1955, he left this job for the pros. He coached the LA Rams for five years. He
switched to the new AFL Chargers in 1960 (they became the San Diego Chargers in
1963). He compiled a great record with the Chargers. Later, he had shorter
stints with other teams. Al Davis and Bill Walsh were students of Gillman. He
was named to the pro football Hall of Fame in 1983. NFL Hall Bio
Malcolm Glazer - Owner, Tampa Bay Bucaneers.
Marshall Goldberg - All-American running back for national champion Pittsburgh
Panthers in the 1930's. Then went to the pros and played for Chicago Cardinals.

1969, named to NFL's all-1930s team.
Lenny Gotshalk - Back-up offensive lineman for the Atlanta Falcons, 1970-80.
Drafted in the 8th round. Father, Jewish. Update: While Gotshalk's father was
Jewish--Lenny became a Christian at a young age and his father eventually
converted to that faith.
Randy Grossman - Tight end on Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl teams of 1970s-80s
Sigmund Harris - Known as "Sig" Harris (1883-1964). Univ. of Minnesota.
All-Amer 1903-1904. Was the signal caller for team that was 27-0-1 over two

Robert Kraft - Owner of the New England Patriots.
Al Lerner - The owner of the new Cleveland Browns franchise which has restored
football (and the Browns name) to a city that deserved to be treated better.
Chad Levitt - Running back currently with the Rams. Listed as Jewish in one
source; not in another. Viewer help welcomed. UPDATE: In a wonderful example of
"Jewish geography", two seperate visitors have assisted us: One was on Chad's
high school wrestling team; the other had Chad's mother as her 5th Grade
teacher. He's Jewish. Thank you, Jewhoo visitors! Update: Levitt was picked-up
by the Chicago Bears at the end of the 1999 season. However, he was cut in
September, 2000 and his (three year) pro career is probably over. At Cornell,
he sent running records.
Marv Levy - Levy had a great career as a coach. He will be inducted in the pro
football hall of fame in August, 2001. He is in several Jewish sports halls of
fame and is on the board of several of these halls of fame. He was and is an
erudite scholar. However, like Bud Grant, he will be remembered most for losing
four Super Bowls. Levy, who won two titles in the Canadian Football League, was
the coach of the Buffalo Bills from 1986 to 1997. He did a great job, overall.
He lead Buffalo to four consecutive AFC titles and those four Super Bowl
appearances (1990-93). Levy joins three other Jews in the Pro Football Hall of
Fame (Sid Luckman; Ron Mix; and Sid Gilman.) Fun and interesting piece on Marv
on the following link. Marv, your a winner in our book!
Benny Lom - (1906-1984) Univ of Cal, halfback. All-Amer 1927-1929. A triple

team 1909, 1st team 1910
Jerry Markbreit - Former NFL Referee.
Mitch Marrow - All-Ivy League Football player from Penn who was a "workout
warrior" at the 1998 Indianapolis Scouting Combine. His size, speed and monster
bench press catapulted him to the third round of the 1998 NFL draft, where he
was taken by the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately, a serious back injury
prevented him from ever playing a down in the NFL and he reached an injury
settlement with the team. Probably the only Jewish player in combine history to
receive the Tony Mandarich/Mike Mamulla award for "all-combine.
Josh Miller - Punter currently playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ron Mix - Offensive tackle for the San Diego Chargers in the 60's. Several
times All-Pro. In the Professional Football Hall of Fame.
Art Modell - Owner of the Cleveland Browns who broke a lot of hearts when he
moved them to Baltimore.Belongs in the Walter O'Malley (Brooklyn to LA Dodgers)
hall of shame.
Harry Newman - (1909- ) Univ of Michigan. All-Amer. 1932 (Douglass Fairbanks
Trophy as Outstanding College Player). College Hall of Fame. Played pro ball
with NY Giants. Led them to title game against Chicago Bears in 1933, but lost
23-21. In 1934 he broke some bones in his back. Made a comeback in 1935, and
again led Giants to a conference championship, but retired after season. In a
weird sidelight, Newman and some other retired football players were hired to
be bodyguards for Ford executives during the labor strife of the late '30's. A
Jewish quarterback working for Henry Ford, Sr. was, to say the least, a weird
development.
Ed Newman - Played Guard for the great Miami Dolphins teams of the early
1970's. Quite active in the Miami Jewish community. Now a judge in Miami.
Newman Bio

Joel F. Rottman - Mr. Rottman is the owner of a leading goal post manufacturing
company. In the 1960s, he invented the "single post" or "one piece" goal post
which is now the standard form of the goal post on NFL playing fields. Most
colleges and many high schools now use this type of goal post, too.
Adam Schreiber - Veteran Guard currently with the Atlanta Falcons.
Allie Sherman - Allie played quarterback for Brooklyn College. He then played
professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1943-47. New York Giants coach
from 1961 to 1968. Led Giants to three NFL championships (1961-63). Member of

Brilliant. Won the Championship in '72. Refused to play, and lost it. Joined
Christian cult groups, made anti-semitic statements. High school drop-out who
is a textbook example of the pros and cons of having an extremely limited world
view. Update: Fischer is still crazy, in July,' 99 he had to be yanked off a
Hungarian Radio station for his insane and disgusting rantings.
Boris Gulko - Former USSR Champion and current US GM.
Issac Kashdan - Former US Champion and Grandmaster.
Gary Kasparov - Born 1963. World chess champion from 1985-2000. His (late)
father was Jewish, his mother is Armenian and not Jewish. His original last
name was Weinstein. But, after his father's death, his coach suggested that
taking a less "Jewish name" would help his career. During the Soviet period he
was shunted aside in favor of non-Jewish players by the Soviet chess
establishment. (As hard as it is for an American to understand this--it drove
some Soviet political figures crazy that, except for Victor Korchnoi, there was
not a single Soviet world chess champion who was not "fully" or partially
Jewish). Kasparov has certainly not been reticent about talking about his
"Jewish half" and he has visited Israel several times. In 2000, a heavily
funded Gary Kasparov Chess Academy opened in Tel Aviv. The Academy is designed
to promote chess worldwide, especially among young people. Long Profile

Mark Spitz - American. Spitz (born Feb. 10, 1950) has won more gold medals in a
single Olympics than any athlete in Olympic history, and is tied with Matt
Biondi (swimming) and Carl Osburn (shooting) for the most medals ever won by a
U.S. Olympian (11). He first gained fame at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City,
coming home with two gold, one silver and one bronze medal. However four years
later at the 1972 Olympics, in Munich, West Germany, he won more gold medals in
a single Olympiad than any athlete to precede or follow him. Spitz won golds in
the individual 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle races and the 100-meter and
200-meter butterfly races, setting a new world record in each. He was also a
member of the three winning medley relay teams, each of which set a world
record (7 golds). Many people will recall that Spitz had to be escorted from
the 1972 games because of the attack on Israel athletes and he flew back to the
United States before the games concluded. Spitz became a dentist following his
1972 retirement from swimming. But he couldn't help but give it one more try.
Spitz made a surprise announcement that he would try out for the 1992 Barcelona
Olympic swim team at the age of 40. Competing against younger Olympians Tom
Jager and Matt Biondi, Spitz finally had to concede defeat. Spitz is arguably
the greatest Jewish athlete who has ever lived. His absolute dominance in his

Tiger Woods today, competing at a level way above the entire field.

People Magazine's current (2000) "most beautiful" list. Krazelburg won three
gold medals at the 2000 Olympics. In the 100 and 200m. backstroke and in 400
meter (team) medley relay. Add Lenny to the pantheon of Jewish sports heroes.
Mazel tov, Lenny, you did good. An Israeli visitor tells us that Krayzelburg
has just (9/2000) agreed to appear at the next Maccabi games in Israel.
Jason Lezak - Member, US Olympics team, 2000. 400 Meter Freestyle Relay. Lezak
won the silver medal as a member of the 400m. freestyle relay team.
His absolute dominance in his
sport in 1972 has never been approached by any other swimmer. He was, like
Tiger Woods today, competing at a level way above the entire field.
Dara Torres - Ms. Torres' father is Jewish, but she does not identify as
Jewish. An American, she was the winner of four medals in team 4x10 relays or
medlay events (1984, Gold; Silver and Bronze in '88; Gold in 1992). She went on
to a career as a fashion model and as the host of "Tae Bao" infomericals. She
decided to make a comeback at 32, and competed successfully in the 2000
Olympics--winning several more medals.
Wendy Weinberg - American. Bronze medal winner in the 800 meter freestyle at
the 1976 Olympics.
TENNIS
Boris Becker - UP with a big disclaimer. Boris Becker, of course, is one of the
greatest players in the history of tennis. Simply clicking on the hyperlink
(his name) will link you to scores of web sites that list his accomplishments.
However, in terms of him being Jewish(?) Well, in a April, 2000 interview with
"Inside Tennis" magazine, Becker stated that his Czech-born mother has a
"Jewish background" and "fled the Russians" and lived in a displaced persons
camp in Germany after WWII. Becker's father is Catholic. What Jewish
"background" means is still unclear. Becker related these facts to explain his
admirable opposition to racism. And great credit should be given Becker for his
stand against racism in Germany and elsewhere. However, since this interview
came out no more information has been published in any media outlet that we are
aware of. We are skeptical that Becker's mother was just "plain" Jewish. Maybe
it is a question of Becker's use of the English language. But Jews rarely fled
the Russians (they may have fled fighting) during WWII. Living under the
Russians was not highly desirable, but it was better than being exterminated
under the Germans. Therefore, it is hard to assume that Becker's mother was
"fully" Jewish by faith and/or ethnicity. The few details related do not sound
consistent with the experience of the few Czech Jews who managed to survive the
Holocaust (approximately 90% were killed).
Elise Burgin - She was a top 30 player in the 80s. A fine doubles player.

known for his smart, tough game and was consistently ranked in the top 40
players. He became Andre Agassi's coach in 1995 and is credited with reviving
Agassi's then lagging career. Interesting interview on link. Gilbert Interview

professional player out of Chile. His mother is Jewish. He has broken through
at a number of important tournaments, surviving into the quarter-finals.
John McEnroe - World famous tennis champion of the '80's and '90's. A visitor
just reminded the editor of this site of a fact that he had read in the Long
Island newspaper "Newsday", years ago. McEnroe's mother is Jewish. McEnroe, so
far as we can tell, has never identified in any way as Jewish, so it was easy
to forget. Correction: We have been informed that a new McEnroe bio says
nothing about his mother being Jewish. As time allows we will check our source
and report back.
Tom Okker - Top pro player in the late '60s through the mid-1970's. Dutch Jew.
Lost in the US Open Men's Finals to Arthur Ashe. In 1973, he was part of the
winning Men's Doubles team at the French Open. He won the same title at the
1976 U.S. Open.
Renee Richards - Became famous as the first player to play on both the men's
and women's tours. She was born as Richard Raskind. Later underwent a sex
change operation. (In a recent interview, said she regrets the surgery. She
should have learned that you gotta watch the ball.) Re-named herself Renee
Richards after the operation. Played on the womens Tour from 1977 to 1981.
Reached as high as #21 or so. Made the U.S. Open womens doubles final in 1977.
Later coached Martina Navratilova.
Pete Sampras - We don't need to list his accomplishments. Sampras has a Jewish
paternal grandmother. He was raised and is Greek Orthodox. As noted in the
FAQ's, we rarely list someone who has one Jewish grandparent or less and does
not practice Judaism. But to end endless inquires, we will note Sampras'
background. Here is what Sampras said in an interview, "I'm 75 percent Greek,
25 percent Jewish. My Dad's Jewish. My Mom was born and raised in Greece; she's
100 percent Greek. My Dad's mother was Jewish, but his father is Greek." From
another article, "But, Pete, who's never set foot in a synagogue, says: 'I was
raised as a Greek Orthodox and went to Greek Orthodox church. [My parents]
decreed that was the way it should go'." (Since it is his paternal grandmother
who is Jewish, he is NOT Jewish by traditional religious law AND he is not
Jewish by faith or primary identification. But, he is, without question, a
great player and a gentleman.)
Richard (Dick) Savitt - Probably the best Jewish player ever. Wimbeldon Singles
champ, 1951. Australian Open Singles Champ, 1951. Savitt Bio
Vic Seixas - Wimbledon champion
Abe Siegel - South African player active in the '60's who was on the S.A. Davis

Siegel at Wimbeldon and loudly shouted "look Mum, a Jewish tennis player!" He
relates that his mother wanted the floor to open up at that moment.

World mark (Melnik's) by more than two meters. Fania broke the Olympic record
in each of her three final tosses. During the next four years, Melnik topped
her own World record several more times. Although she managed only a fourth
place finish at the l976 Olympics in Montreal, she had her best career throw
that year, a toss of 70.50 meters--making her the first woman to break the
70-meters mark. In 1977, she won the first World Cup Discus competition in
Dusseldorf, Germany. Melnik is a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall
of Fame in Israel.
Irving Mondschein - United States decathlon champion in 1944, 1946, 1947.

Part Jewish.
David Rigert - Soviet mid-heavyweight. Won Olympic gold metal in 1976.
Correction: While Riegert is listed as Jewish in several sources-we are
informed by a former Russian Jewish athlete that this is not the case. Part of
the evidence, sadly, is that he was made head coach of the Soviet team around
1990. No Jew would be given this position.
Valery Schary - WEIGHTLIFTING Gold medal winner in the Light-Heavyweight
division. (less than 182lb). His name is sometimes spelled, "Valery Shariy".

the millions of dollars (we didn't know how financially big this sport was
until we looked up her record). Anyway, American Jewish volleyball fans, she
sometimes appears in the States---so go out there and give a cheer for this
Jewish woman from the other side of the equator. Career Stats/Photo

better, but he could not race for Mercedes in the 1930s because Mercedes, of
course, is a German company and he was a Jew. Fortunately, the French Army sent
him to America in 1940 to race in the Indianapolis 500. Thus he avoided being
trapped in occupied France. He joined the American army when America entered
the war. After the war, he opened a famous French restaurant in New York that
become a gathering place for the international racing set. Nice biography on

converted away from Judaism. He is too famous a figure too ignore. So he is

status of a "full" matador. Franklin was a friend of Hemingway and the great
Spanish writer, Garcia Lorca. Hemingway lavishly praised Franklin's skill in

1987. A picture of "Papa" Hemingway with Franklin is on the following link.

Kornheiser gave an amusing interview about his son's bar mitzvah. He told the
rabbi he might speak and make a few jokes. The rabbi said such, "shtick", was
inappropriate for a bar mitzvah. Kornheiser said the rabbi then "stole" his
best jokes and used them in his son's bar mitzvah sermon. (Our favorite
Kornheiser joke: Sol and Sadie have just gotten married. Sol is 86, and Sadie

(starting with the subject line on this).

Try reading the name of the newsgroup you're posting to.
It's rec.sport.baseball. On topic is appreciated, and
posting the contents of a website to a newsgroup is a
violation of copyright law, normally, as well as a violation
of netiquette.
I've used AOL before, I know you have to agree to certain
standards of behavior before posting. You probably clicked
"okay" without reading them, but you're still bound by them.

Ima, while you are allowed to disagree with my messages, you are not allowed to
threaten me over them!! Hint: You are also bound by your ISP TOS!! Every
service has 'em!! Secondly, pls. don't make me contact my DREAM TEAM OF
ATTORNEYS!eh You seem to be taking your "cursor characters" way too
seriously!! As it stands, you are bordering on CYBER HARASSMENT, LIBEL &
FRIVOLOUS TOS INTENT!! In the end, there is no law which says that I cannot
segueway to another sports topic in this forum! DOH! Get a grip, Ima!! -D
Firstly, Jews come in all different shapes, sizes and ethnicities!eh There are
CUBAN-GREEK JEWS (Jamie-Lynn Sigler, "Meadow" on the Sopranos), SEPHARDIC JEWS
(Paula Abdul, singer), AFRICAN-AMERICAN JEWS (Slash, Lisa Bonet, Lenny Kravitz)
and there are CHINESE JEWS. Secondly, I am an American born Jew of
Ashkenazi/Sephardic ancestry, whose name is DARRIN (GAELIC). DOH!ehh Remember,
there is no set law that says, "your first name has to be HEBRAIC." There are
plenty of Jews who have GOYISHA names! -D
Yes, and unlike you, I haven't violated it. Copyright
infringement is a violation, and posting a significant
portion of a website is generally considered a violation of
copyright.
Every
>service has 'em!! Secondly, pls. don't make me contact my DREAM TEAM OF

Go ahead. I'll end up suing you for a frivolous lawsuit.
Not that any attorney would take your case. But feel free
to waste your money trying.
eh You seem to be taking your "cursor characters" way too
>seriously!! As it stands, you are bordering on CYBER HARASSMENT, LIBEL &
>FRIVOLOUS TOS INTENT!!
Umm, no. Not even close. Nice of you to threaten a lawsuit
over somebody objecting to you posting copyrighted material,
insulting other people (as you've done repeatedly without
cause), and violating a contract you entered into with AOL.
You must really be good at charming people.
In the end, there is no law which says that I cannot
>segueway to another sports topic in this forum!
No, but as I said, it's a violation of netiquette. The law
you're violating is copyright law, posting the work of other
people, verbatim, in a public forum. Heck, you didn't even
properly attribute it.
>DOH!
Are you Homer Simpson? You keep saying this.

BTW, a basic grasp of English would tell you that I haven't
even threatened you in any way. I merely pointed out that
your posting of a website's hard work was a violation of
AOL's TOS. I've never reported anybody for TOS violations
(although I've been tempted). You are the one who
threatened, with attorneys. (which does not reflect well on
your grasp of law)
I'm starting to seriously doubt the 15 million number...you've named
more than that here by now, surely?

Well, when my family came to these shores in the 1800s they were
Jews, Catholics and Buddhists. A quick survey of my generation would
reveal mainly Protestants and Atheists.
That's the way things turned out, but I could have just as easily been
been a Jewish Asian-American.
Nelson, I'm a little surprised to have to tell you of all people to
wake up and realize that you are living in America in the 21st century.

Tom, believe me, you are not alone in wanting to disbelieve!ehe Now do you see
why Jews are God's Chosen People!? Jews have a special gift. The gift of
invaluable talent: talent in every field of human endeavor. All in spite of
comprising just 1% of the world's population, thousands of years of
persecution, and the Holocaust. Jews are the oldest of any people on earth
still around with their national identity and cultural heritage intact!!
Abraham is the father of the world's 3 major religions: JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY,
ISLAM (ancestors of the Hebrew & Arabic peoples). JESUS (formerly known as
"sweet Jewish Jesus" ehhe) is still worshipped by billions more. Jews have been
able to exert an influence on world civilization more profound and lasting than
any other ancient
culture. Remember, Jews have been consistently excellent since the dawning of
time! This is why anti-Semitism exists! ECONOMIC JEALOUSY, plain & simple!! Not
only do we excel on the playing field, but we are also the owners,
commissioners, broadcasters, agents, etc, etc. We inhabit every echelon of
ATHLETICS!!

From the website of the U.S. Copyright Office
Copyright protection subsists from the time the work is
created in fixed form. The copyright in the work of
authorship immediately becomes the property
of the author who created the work.
http://www.loc.gov/copyright/circs/circ1.html#wci
It took all of 45 seconds to find this - you might try
researching before spouting off.
In other words, registering with the copyright office makes
it easier to enforce the copyright, but is not required.

People, now do you see what I mean about NITPICKING!?eheh RMK, you just

Wrong. Anything you write is copyrighted the moment you write it.
Registration adds to the remedies available, but failure to register your
writing does NOT deprive you of the right to enforce your copyright.

What theories!? That he managed to wipe out 6 million of my people, and it
still hasn't hampered the success of the Jewish religion!? LOL! If that isn't
a testament to Jewish perseverance, I don't know what is!! HITLER is forever
rotting in hell, while Jews continue to excel in every echelon of life!
Remember, race exists, and like it or not, race does matter! Strictly speaking
from a socioeconomic and intellectual point of view. Furthermore, comparing
Hitler to a Jew (yours truly) is nothing short of BLASPHEME!! If you're
incapable of differentiating between non-threatening pride in your own race
with facilitating the hatred and death against certain groups of people (while
claiming to be superior), then you are in dire need of mental intervention!
Every race is subject to fallibility, but not every race comprises 1% of the
world's population! Not every race has been as consistently excellent as the
Jewish people. Not every race has lost 6 million of its people and have been
persecuted for centuries. Point!? Jews have truly overcome!! Lastly, since
LITTLE HITLER could not compete with the EUROPEAN JEWISH MIND, he chose to
inact BRAWN over BRAINS!! Jews have always been used as easy scapegoats for
the misfortunes of others. Anti-Semitism = economic jealousy, ignorance &
social antipathy.
I cannot imagine that this poster is actually interested in raising the esteem
of the admirable Jewish people, who tend overwhelmingly to be commited to the
concept of racial equality. This could very well be an anti-semite trying to

I saw Goody Rosen's name in the earlier alphabetical list. My father
told me a story once - that a lot of Jewish fans were upset one day at
Ebbets Field when some guy named Fred Sington they had never heard of

I cut this quote, which used to be available on the Baseball America web
site, where Stein wrote a player journal this year. He wrote some
pretty interesting stuff, and as a journalism major with an injury
history, writing may be his future, not baseball. I don't know if he's
playing this year, but he got shut down before the end of the season
last year. This year, Baseball America has a Royals farm hand named
Darren Fenster writing a journal. I don't know his religious
background, but I have heard of Jews named Fenster. It was in one of
Fenster's entries that I learned that Jose Bautista is a coach in the
Royals farm system.

Here is the response I got from the Jewhoo webmaster. The 'he hasnt been

page reproductions--etc. I would really appreciate that. The fact of
someone
being Jewish is not copyrightable. But our stuff is.
Do you have any thoughts on how to proceed against him? I can threaten
legal
action---but thats an expensive road to hoe. I will ask him politely and
hopefully it will end. Thank you for making me aware of this.

Yes.

No. But one can copyright sentences and paragraphs. And that's what
you're stealing.
What's funny is that his response illustrated your point
far more effectively than you could have. I didn't even
see the entire subject line because it was too long and
didn't know whether your comments were called for, before
I read his reply.

You might want to send these updates to www.jewhoo.com, the
site these were originally "liberated" from. I'm certain
the webmaster would like to post them.
This guy is starting to sound like Avraham Buker/Bukman (?), who
posted in similar fashion in the 24hourhelpdesk.support newsgroup
awhile back, threatening people with lawsuits when they didn't
completely agree with his idolatry of Jewishness. He got a VERY rough
ride in that group...

You're a brave man, and apparently trying to end the thread. The "H"
guy's name is one of the great ways to do this, I understand...

Tim, under Talmudic law, the matriarchal lineage is what determines Judaism.
Secondly, Judaism is a religion that is comprised of varied ethnicities. As
the great JEWISH-GERMAN (not GERMAN-JEWISH!eh) philosopher MOSED MENDELSSOHN
(1729-1786) once said, "You don't cure a headache by decapitation, and you
don't solve the pain of being a Jew in a non-Jewish world by giving up your
heart and your soul." Point!? Get in touch with your Judaic roots and never be
ashamed of your Jewishness.
>philosopher MOSED MENDELSSOHN
Typo: MOSES
No wonder he was a wild man and a Hollywood manwhore, those damn Catholic
scoundrels!
Hmmm, way to feed the greedy money grubbing Jews stereotype. You are on a roll.

Puh-lease!heh Nobody does "the funny" better than the Jews!hehee The greatest
comedians of the 20th century have always been Jewish: Jack Benny (Kubelsky),
George Burns (Birnbaum), Woody Allen (Konigsberg), Mel Brooks (Kaminsky),
Milton "Uncle Milte" Berle ("father of tv," Berlinger), Sid Caesar, Danny Kaye
(Kominski), Jerry Seinfeld, Howard Stern, Andrew Dice Clay (Silverstein),
Groucho Marx & The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges, Rodney Dangerfield
(Cohen), Jerry Lewis (Levitch), etc, etc. Once again, who deemed you the
keeper of comedy, let alone content!?eheh David, you wouldn't know funny if it
sat on your face and did the CURLY SHUFFLE!eheheheheheeeeee

see, david, it's a syllogism:
many jewish people are funny;
darrint68 is jewish (i presume); therefore
darrint68 is funny.
similarly, if many jewish people are successful in sports, their success
adheres to darrint68, because he is also jewish.
Ben
>Afterall, there would be no Christianity without the Jews. Thank you!
Tim, or life as we know it!eheh P.S. You're welcome! I thank you and my people
thank you! LOL!
Maybe he is not ashamed of it, maybe he just thinks it's a bunch of bull shit.
(Not ashamed of MY Jewish blood, also not ashamed to totally reject Judaism)
Cpro, why are you such a YENTA!?heh And why is your nose up everyone's
TUCHIS!?eh If you are indeed a Jew (highly doubtful from the self-loathing tone
of your above doozy!eh), you are a disgraceful one at that!! Here's a vowel,
now go buy a clue!eheh DOH!
Why are you such an asshole?
hehehehe.

What was self-loathing about it? I am not Jewish, I think its bullshit. I don't
loathe my self for being Jewish, because I am not, I have Jewish blood, big
deal. Not ashamed of it, just don't have the Jewish ideals.

Here's a vowel?
