On the GAME OF THE WEEK Saturday (April 14), well into the
game, Chicago's Harkey was pitching to Bonds. McCarver
remarked that Harkey looked like he's getting STRONGER.
The other announcer said that he once told that to Bob Gibson
and Gibson said, "That's the Dumbest thing I've ever heard!
How can you throw 90 pitches and get stronger...??"
McCarver then said he was surprised Gibson was so blunt.

Who was the other announcer? After picking up the game early on (around
first or second) his name was not mentioned once. I'm sure it is
someone I should know. Having said that, to all you Tim McCarver dislikers,
Ithought the pair did a good job. They never got too inane but managed to
keep some interesting chatter going, while calling the game well. Early on
especially, I found their insights quite incisive. Comments?

After one sentence, all baseball fans should know who the
play-by-play man was. It was Jack Buck, Brent's replacement.
Of course, Brent wouldn't be able to hold Jack's jock in the
broadcasting booth. I even found McCarver to be tolerable alongside
Buck. I thought CBS did a very nice job with the ballgame, and I
especially liked Ernie Harwell's narration of a Roger Angell
passage to open up the broadcast... And, the quote the
original post-er has above was a classic!
Hearing Jack Buck makes one think of a hot summer's night in
St. Louis. That's pretty good on a cold, dreary April
afternoon...

Well, Gibson is entitled to his opinion; as an ex power pitcher, it is not
surprising. But Randy Jones, ex sinker specialist, used to claim he pitched
better when he was tired, sine his sinker had more break. This maybe isn't
"stronger" in the physical sense, but his pitching was "stronger".

I agree! I thought these two did a pretty nice job together, even though
I'm not much of a McCarver fan. I thought Jack had an excellent sense of
humor in the booth, which is something I missed whenever I listened to him
on the radio. Well, this year, he'll get the recognition he deserves, and
he doesn't even have to be named Brent. BTW, anyone know if Buck and McCarver
ever worked together before?

around (I'm listening to him the the Cards game as I type. Yes, I'm biased:)

I didn't hear Tim's comment (once again, I'm biased, as McCarver was
my boyhood baseball idol, when he caught for the Cardinals.), but I'm
amazed that he could be surprised by Gibby's comments considering he
caught Gibson from about 1959 to 1971 or so. Also, anyone who has heard
Gibson talk, knows that he says what's on his mind, just as he'd throw
hard and inside to keep batters off the outer half of the plate.

Well, I'm not sure I get the point of this. If it's that McCarver, of
all people, should know how blunt Gibson can be, OK.
But otherwise, I can only recommend a look at ol' Catfish Hunter, who
sure used to pitch games where he got progressively less hittable. This
was well-known around baseball; he was sort-of his own relief pitcher.
Howard Cosell (when he used to do the Series) would say in his ignorant
way that Hunter was starting to tire (he'd say this if Hunter gave up a
hit or threw a ball outside and low in the 6th inning or after); the
other announcers (and 25million fans) would just nod and go about their
business.
On the other hand, the other announcer was Jack Buck, who's called Cards
games since before sliced bread. So I guess he a) knew McCarver, b)
knew Gibson, c)had McCarver's respect.
And if you think McCarvver's stupid, think back to game 1 of the 88
nlcs. "Look at the Dodger CF! He's playing way too deep for gary
Carter, there, He's playing him like the Gary Carter of old."
Two pitches later, Carter makes his contribution by depositiong one
EXACTLY where the CF ought to have been.

McCarver was KIDDING about Gibson being blunt! As Tom points out,
Tim caught Gibson for about 10 years.
I figured net readers would go for McCarver because he often uses his
squeakiest voice to say "IN MY OPINION..." :-)
Tim is a fine analyst and the pairing with Buck could work. I'm not familiar
with Buck's work, but I'd be surprised if he hasn't spent a great number of
hours broadcasting games all by himself. The two of them need time to get
used to each other.
One thing I hope we don't see from CBS is NBC's "moral of the story"
reporting. Vin Scully & co. would try every game to point out why the
winning team was going to win, and why the losing team was going to lose.
They didn't trust the viewer to understand that the baseball season was
162 games long, even when they had a broadcast every Saturday. Maybe they
were trying to make blowout games "interesting" for us. Anyway in close
games they couldn't be sure who was going to win so they would shut up about
it.

p.s. As a Mets fan I have to say how much I love Bob Murphy, an announcer who
always has a good word. He described Dwight Gooden's 2-day old daughter
as "a beatiful baby girl" without having seen her, and you know he meant it
too.

I don't think they have. After McCarver's playing days, he got his start
broadcasting with the Phillies. He left them to go to NY to become famous,
ie. a bigger market. He did Mets games and worked with ABC baseball
telecasts. They do, however, know each other from many years ago, when
McCarver was the Cardinals' catcher and Buck did the broadcasting of
St. Louis games.

Sorry my McC posting was ambiguous. I wasn't so interested
in whether McC knew how blunt Gibson was.
I was more interested in the getting STRONGER.
Sure Catfish got less hitable, but I don't think he
got STRONGER! By Strong I mean the physical sense.
Not, I think, like Capablaca's a strong player.
I don't think McC was using the word strong in the
Capablanca sense. no?

After finding out that Jack Buck was the St. Louis announcer I asked a
friend of mine from St. Louis about him, and his comments were the same
as yours, which is good. But he still reminises about the old days when
Harry and side-kick, who I believe was there through nepotism, were
drunk as skunks in the booth. On long games towards the end the side-kick
shut up unless prodded by Harry to say it was Busch time.
As regards Tim McCarver and Jack Buck, I think they are an excellent team.
While neither is the best as announcer and colorman, both are excellent
professionals and much of their comment was very interesting.
