When Toronto was presented the World Series Trophy, instead of giving them
some well deserved praise the presenter said that they had beaten a very
good team being the Atlanta Braves (which is quite true). Couldn't they
have simply congratulated the Blue Jays and praised them for the tremendous
effort they gave (I don't care which team you are a fan of, it was a
tremendous effort). Then they had just as many Atlanta interviews as they
had Blue Jay interviews in their post game show. Pathetic! Their post game
show only lasted a few minutes. Some fans love to see the celebrations
after the game in case you haven't forgotten. Oh well, I guess the
billions of dollars paid for the TV contract somehow hurts when the trophy
is captured by a foreign team.
Oh, but I forgot. The Blue Jays aren't a foreign team. They don't have a
Canadian on their team. Who gives a shit! Are all of the Atlanta Braves
American? I doubt it. This is another thing that bugs me about the
Yankee media. Yesterday they were conceding the fact that a team based in
Canada won the world series and the trophy would be outside of the States
for the first time but it didn't matter since none of the players on the
team were Canadian. That makes me sick! Give the team credit! They were
the better team and they won. Isn't that how team sports is supposed to
work.
As for the netters who can't see how come a whole country goes mad when a
team in one city in that country wins the world series, I say get a life.
If you only have two teams in your country participating in a league
dominated by teams from another country of course the whole country is
going to support their team, win or lose.
Nothing would be sweeter than seeing a TORONTO BLUE JAYS vs. MONTREAL
EXPOS World Series next year. Absolutely nothing!!!

"Sweeter"? Wouldn't that just give Canada something else to be divided
about? Believe me, I'm very sensitive to the referendum being voted on
today and its history and what's at stake with it. But considering how
much I've read on the net lately arguing about whether and why the Blue
Jays' win should excite (and unite) *all* of Canada, I just naturally
wonder what having 2 Canadian teams in the Series would do. Yes, I realize
having 2 U.S. teams in it doesn't necessarily "divide" the U.S. (in a
literal, meaningful sense). But having only one U.S. team in it didn't
exactly "unite" us, either--especially since many of us (myself included)
were pulling for the Jays ;-) (Also nothwithstanding how all the "Us vs.
Them" bozos--including CBS--tried to polarize the Series
nationalistically.)
BTW, I thought the banner in Toronto during Game 5 was interesting: "God
sent a Blue Jay to unite Canada." What did Canadians think about it?
Oh, well. We're back to this again. Everybody is convinced that
the broadcasters were somehow biased for the other guys. Last
year we had lots of Braves fans who were convinced the
guys in the booth were rooting for the Twins and lots of
Twins fans convinced they were rooting for the Braves.
So this year the announcers were in favor of the Braves, huh? I
guess that's why Sanders dumped the water on McCarver.

Would u beleive it, they did not even show the MVP-trophy
being awarded to Pat Borders.
It is disgusting indeed.

Anybody can say anything they want - the fact remains clear. The
Toronto Blue Jays are the WS Champions of MLB for 1992.
From my seat, I don't think of, and never have thought of Canada
(except Quebec) as a foreign country. A different country than the
USA, yes. Foreign, absolutely not. It is sad that some small minds
will think in terms of *foreigners* taking what they perceive as our
(USs) trophy and WS Championship, but the larger picture should
prevail here. This has been a great Series, with the Blue Jays finally
winning it all. For those who understand BASEBALL, this is a GREAT day
for Major League Baseball - players, owners, and especially fans -
true fans - not some of the phonies we've seen here, who can't see
beyond their idiotic prejudices. Toronto has come of age, a long way
since their organization began, and they deserve all the glory for
their achievement. And it is a victory for Canada (yeah, even Quebec)
as the Blue Jays are the first Canadian team to win the World Series.
Enjoy, Canada!!!

I would love to see this myself.

The postgame show *I* saw was quite long (so much so that some local
non-baseball fans were mad that the news was starting even later than it
already had to--because of the extra innings--because of the postgame
coverage). And the only Braves interview I saw was McCarver's short
interview with Cox. So, I can't figure out what *you* were watching!
(Actually, I would have been interested to hear what Braves players had to
say right then--but not at the expense of Jays interviews, of course.)

I too would have been furious if I hadn't been able to see Pat get his
much-deserved award. But I think the people you have a gripe with is your
local CBS affiliate for cutting off the main CBS feed of the postgame
stuff, not with CBS itself. Like I mentioned above, our CBS affiliate
didn't start its late news program until after CBS signed off from
Atlanta. So call your local CBS station and give 'em *&@^#%$@!!
What?! There was *one* Atlanta interview, the obligatory heartstring-
pulling number with Bobby Cox. On the Toronto side, I recall interviews
with Paul Beeston (Pat Gillick was also with him, I believe), Cito Gaston,
Pat Borders, Dave Winfield, Joe Carter, Jimmy Key, Mike Timlin, and (I
think) Roberto Alomar. Except for the interview with Cox, the entire time
was spent in the Toronto lockerroom. You sure you were watching CBS?

Who is "they"? Who in the media actually said that "it didn't matter"
that the team was based in Canada? I heard no such thing.

Personally, I thought CBS did a really good job. It was a hell of a lot
better than when the Jays played Minnesota last year in the ALCS. You
couldn't blink fast enough before the announcers would come out with another
statement putting down the Jays. IMHO, they were more than fair this year.
If it wasn't for the Bill Geist piece, I would have said that they did an
excellent job.
The best slip up by an announcer during the World Series was when, after Game
2, Pat O'Brien said, "Well, there you go. The Blue Jays have won their first
World Series." I didn't think Atlanta would concede so easily. :-)
Wayne
That is the fault of your local affiliate. I saw the rep from Chevrolet
present the MVP tropy to Pat Borders. I never new what it looked like.
I think it's a cool looking trophy.

(I can barely speak for myself, you expect me to speak for my employer??)
They were objective. You pointed out yourself! What you wanted was CBS
to fawn all over the Blue Jays, which would not have been objective.
Let's look at what you said:
>When Toronto was presented the World Series Trophy, instead of giving them
>some well deserved praise the presenter said that they had beaten a very
>good team being the Atlanta Braves (which is quite true). Couldn't they
>have simply congratulated the Blue Jays and praised them for the tremendous

Bud Selig, acting as commissioner of baseball, said some nice words on
behalf of baseball congratulating the Blue Jays. He's not a Blue Jays
fan, he's "acting as commissioner of baseball." There's a certain
amount of impartiality he has to show (besides, he's president of the
Milwaukee Brewers). He CAN'T fawn all over the Blue Jays just like he
couldn't have fawned all over the Braves if they had won. It is just
NOT done!
>tremendous effort). Then they had just as many Atlanta interviews as they
>had Blue Jay interviews in their post game show. Pathetic!
That's called balance. That's called objective. Get the reaction from
the winners AND the loosers. Did you notice that all the Blue Jays
interviews were done in the clubhouse while the celebrating was going
on, yet the Braves interviews were done in an area OUTSIDE the
clubhouse? Oh, but getting the reaction of the Braves is not objective
because home-boy here thinks all they should have showed are the Blue
Jays. Sorry, that's not objective journalism.

They did not forget anything. You saw the Blue Jays clubhouse in
celebration. While you remember is CBS paid for the contract, what you
forget is they have to make money some how. First, they have to run
commercials. If it cuts into the interview time, so be it! The
contract has to be paid for and commercials pay the freight. Second, I
think you forgot that the game went into extra innings. The longer the
game went on, the less time they could spend after the game. Why? CBS
has time restrictions. They have to balance how much they can get on
the air (including commercials and running the credits) before they have
to get off the air and give the local affiliates a chance to run their
late news. Yes, CBS affiliates HAVE to run the news... that's HAVE to
if they want the revenues. The realities of US-based television is that
the individual televisions stations (the networks can only own six of
their "affiliates," the rest are independently owned) make a lot of
money from their local news programs. Having the World Series is fine,
but news pays a lot more of the bills.
BTW: If the Braves won you would see the same thing. The realities of
the money and time constraints do not change based on who won.

They... define "they!" I do consulting for one of the television
networks and not only did this network mention the World Series and who
won, but they pointed out that this is the first time a Canadian team
won. This has been in all the newspapers and on the television I've
been watching. They... show me concrete examples of THEY!
