New York Yankees outfielder Darryl Strawberry became the Eddie Murphy of
baseball late Wednesday when he solicited an undercover policewoman for
sex while fortifying himself with cocaine stashed in his wallet.

This was apparently the reward he gave himself for successfully
undergoing chemotherapy six months ago as part of his colon cancer
treatment.

Since the late 1980s, Strawberry has done baseball proud by racking up
such legal tussles as assault with a deadly weapon against his wife, a
paternity lawsuit, charges of assault against a girlfriend he was living
with, federal tax evasion charges and failure to make child support
payments.

Even Yankee fans, who seem to forgive even the biggest morons so long as
they can win a nine inning game, must be pondering the depths of
judgement possessed by the low-digit IQ Mr. Strawberry.

As reported by CNN: "Major League Baseball suspended him for 60 days in
1995 after he tested positive for cocaine. The previous year, he
entered the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and spent
four weeks undergoing treatment of a substance abuse problem. In 1990,
he entered the Smithers Center in New York for alcohol rehabilitation."

We are certain many will criticize the free-spirited Mr. Strawberry and
question why he would ingest brain deteriorating illegal drugs and chase
skank $50 whores only two months after making his debut as the
spokesperson for the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence.

To those Doubting Thomases, we say, "Let Darryl be Darryl." (Indeed, we
also say, "Let O.J. be O.J." for it is the sorry lot of inner city
sports thugs who rise out of the ghetto thanks to their raw talent--only
to chase a self-fulfilling prophecy of drugs and alcohol that sees them
crawling right back home again on all fours like the animals they truly
are.)

In the case of Darryl Strawberry, we applaud this numskull’s slow
descent into a Purgatory of his own construction.

Society should throw no lifeline to a coddled, privileged and over-paid
weakling who squanders his gift with the self-destructive zeal of a true
self-hater.

Mr. Strawberry shames the memory of Willie Mays by cavalierly trading
his spot on a baseball card to serve as the poster boy for black
failure.

The path Mr. Strawberry has selected for himself concludes only at the
end of a dark alley littered with used syringes and a cold, dead body.
We urge him to proceed as quickly as possible to the fatal overdose that
will be his destiny.

Mr. Strawberry, society looks forward to clearing away your body with
the same disinterest that we dispose of all foul, rotting trash.

Oh, I see, you're one of THOSE. You sound awfully righteous, but you
pigeonhole and stereotype like a champ. Excellent work.

My favorite Darryl moment was when he was on the court steps after his
tax evasion trial giving a press conference. As Darryl was trying to
talk some guy off camera was screaming DARRYL-DARRYL-DARRYL.

This is perhaps one of the most racist items ever written. I would
like to see you defend your assertion that people who are from
inner-city areas are animals, as well as this "black failure" to which
you refer. You seem to be in need of some serious education about the
facts of real life.

Or maybe, just maybe it is an unfortunate and tragic relapse of a drug
addict. Strawberry screwed up big time, but is this anger you seem to have
towards him really that necessary.

1/26/90- Strawberry is arrested for alleged assault with a deadly weapon,
alleged to have hit her with an open hand and threatened her with a .25
pistol3/9/90- same case, L.A. authorities announce that no charges will be
filed for the above incident
9/4/93- arrested for allegedly hitting Charisse Simons, his live in
girlfriend
9/21/93- NO CHARGES ARE FILED BY SIMONS FOR THE INCIDENT (they remain
married to this day)
4/25/95- Ordered to repay $350,000 in back taxes and sentenced to six
months of home confinement
6/24/96- charged with failing to pay $300,000 in child support by June 24
deadline
7/5/96- Promises to use $260,000 signing bonus to make restitution for
child support
As for the paternity lawsuit, Strawberry was found to be the father of
the child. So what, is that a crime? No, so WTF does that have to do with
anything. So for your litany of charges against him, we have two
accusations, no charges filed. One case of being late with child support,
which he later repaid. And one conviction of failure to pay taxes. Wait
until you know the outcome of things. It doesn't seem as bad now. Though
for people like you, the actual accusation equals guilt.

Most people are wondering about his judgement, which is horrible. Though
it seems to me forgiveness should be a more viable option. Especially by
us, he's only disappointed us. The only people hurt here are his family.
Even the Yankees are only disappointed. He wasn't integral to the teams
hopes anyway.

Millions of Americans have entered rehab. Millions are addicted to
substances. What is the point of this? Yeah, he's screwed up a lot, too
much. Addiction is a disease, much like other diseases. You'll say that
the choice is made unlike other diseases. Let's see, alcohol is a legal
substance, so all those alcoholics must want to be ones. It's no different
with illegal drugs. Addiction is not something that you choose, it sucks a
person in.

We should criticize his judgement. I'll wait until they convict him
though. Doesn't matter how much he screws up. He is still innocent until
proven otherwise. I know its an antiquated notion in our media saturated
culture that allows us to rush to judgement once all the allegations are
in, but I kind of like it.

Wow. What a truly amazing statement. How do you manage to equate O.J. to
Daryl. Please let me know. Except that both were found innocent in a
court of law. Let's take your idea of guilt though. Daryl is accused of
soliciting a prostitute and possesion of cocaine. O.J. was accused of a
double homicide. Oh, I get it, drug users are just as bad as murderers.
Brilliant moralizing there. "Inner city sports thugs", another great
phrase. Wouldn't you know it, the vast majority of them don't go crawling
home on all fours. Drug/Alcohol abuse isn't a self fulfilling
prophecey.

No of course not. We should never ever do anything to try and help those
with a disease. No, let's keep building more prisons. Damnit that's where
he belongs. Let's lock up all those drug users, he's no better than the
other guy. We should maybe try more treatment. He screwed up, again.
We lose some trust. He's an addict, relapses happen. He will always be
addicted to cocaine and alcohol. Hopefully this serves as a wakeup call
for him.

> Mr. Strawberry shames the memory of Willie Mays by cavalierly trading

But he honors the memory of the great American hero, Mickey Mantle. The
Mick if you don't remember died of chirrosis of the liver. The result of
years of alcohol abuse. Let's remember a lot of things have changed, we
now recognize domestic violence as a crime. I wouldn't be too shocked if
Mickey smacked around a gal or two while he was on one of his benders. How
the hell does Strawberry serve as a poster child for black failure? As a
matter of fact what is black failure? Is it the lack of funding for public
schools? The complete failure of federal low income housing? Lack of
public transportation to the open jobs in the suburbs? How about the
governments war on drugs, especially the briliant 10-1 crack/cocaine
sentencing ratio, that has resulted in the targeting of black males? No, of
course not, none of those have anything to do with black people being an
economic underclass, no it's people like Daryl Strawberry. Hey what about
Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Bonds, Kirby Puckett, Ozzie Smith. Oh, I know, they
don't count. No you see all the successes we don't hear about are
outweighed by one man's failure.

Me too, me too. I want everyone who screws up to die. Let's just shoot
them out of hand. They really have screwed up my life. Good idea.

Always a good idea to take the moral high road, huh.

Basil, a quick dejanews search shows that the "cattlovrr" is not merely a

Ignore him/her. This individual is a troll who takes delight in pissing
off many at a time with ranting, ignoring posts. Don't humor this "person"
by replying.
