We all know CBS doesn't care about the regular season, from the
television schedule. Now we know that they also assume fans don't care
about the regular season.

When each batter came up for the first time last night, CBS gave his
ALCS stats, not his regular-season stats. For most batters, the
regular-season stats were never displayed; in later plate appearances,
you would sometimes get something like batting with runners in scoring
position, or batter-pitcher matchups.

The AL crew seemed to be better than the NL crew, bringing up fewer
ridiculous quotes and stats. But they still thought they were
broadcasting a football game (often trying to make a point with a
chalkboard or chart and then getting interrupted by a pitch), and there
were a few things which they should have known better, such as a
reference to Abner Doubleday's invention of the game.

The ALCS seems much better; Kaat and Gumby are tolerable, and you
can bring in Harwell on radio for a great listen. For the NLCS,
McCarver is about to make me give up baseball. McDonough is ok, but
Tim - SHUT UP! On radio, we've got Coleman; I'm able to tolerate him
now after 15 years of being desensitized by
"Rich Folkers is throwing up in the bullpen"
"Winfield slides in to second with a stand up double" etc.
Coleman does give the score and recap the game on a regular basis.

There are so many good broadcasters in the game, and only Harwell ended up
on the CBS team this year. He sure is a pleasure.

That he is; head and shoulders above anyone else that CBS could find. Where
are Vin Scully and Jack Buck (he's fine on the radio, despite what you've seen
on tv)?

Interestingly enough, I was listening to the radio about an hour ago
when an ESPN Extra Point with Chris Berman came on. He was waxing quite
poetic about Harwell, a pleasure which seems quite new to him.

Now if only he'd take a few notes.
