With the addition of place of birth lists at Baseball Reference, I
decided to make up All Time teams for Missouri state and the St. Louis
region. Feel free to give any alternative players. Feel free to do
your own for other cities and states.

Yes, I do know there are 36 players here. Just think of this as a
winter roster. :)

For the St. Louis region, I was just going to use the counties of the
Metropolitan Area of St. Louis, but I ran accross a web site that was
showing the history of the St. Louis Region and it covered the
counties just beyond the Metro area. I expanded to the counties just
beyond those when I found restricting myself to the smaller area was
losing me too many regulars. As it is, I may be making a mistake by
including Sangamon, the county including Springfield, Illinois and
leaving out the county including Springfield, Missouri, since
Springfield IL may be oriented more towards the major league teams in
the state, the Cubs and White Sox, than the team of the closest city,
while Springfield MO has always been a Cardinal fan region. Anyway,
here are the counties I allowed.

St. Louis, MO-IL Region:

Illinois Counties:
Bond, Calhoun, Christian, Clinton, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Jackson,
Jefferson, Jersey, Macoupin, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery,
Morgan, Perry, Pike, Randolph, St. Clair, Sangamon, Scott, Shelby,
Washington

Missouri Counties:
Audrain, Bolinger, Callaway, Crawford, Franklin, Gasconade, Iron,
Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Maries, Montgomery, Osage, Perry, Phelps,
Pike, St. Charles, St. Francois, St. Genevieve, St. Louis City, St.
Louis County, Warren, Washington

The players and pitchers on the career and single season teams are the
same, but different men are starters if somebody with a less
noteworthy career had a better single season. Rank is the rank given
by Bill James in the New Historical Abstract. WS is the Win Shares
assigned to the player for his career or single season.

Billy Rogell's 1933-34 seasons are a perfect illustration of the
stability of James' Win Shares allocations. Rogell earned 25 Win
Shares in 1933 and 24 in 1934, and his OBP, SLG, and fielding did
indeed drop a little bit. The seasons also show that the system is
fair for players on both good and bad teams because the 1933 team
scored 722 runs and allowed 733 and had a 75-79 record while the
legendary 1934 team that played the Gas House Cardinals scored 958
runs and allowed 708 runs and had a 101-53 record. Rogell with similar
OPS in both years goes from 67 runs, 57 rbis in 1933 to 114 runs, 100
rbis in 1934.

Bake McBride was actually ranked 107 as a right fielder but since I
only had two ranked left fielders from the St. Louis region, I moved
him. I'd have picked Max Flack if his 26 Win Share season hadn't been
in the Federal League.

Pardon the split stats, minimal spacing, and initials but it was the
only way to do away with really messy word wrapping when putting these
stats in a newsgroup post via Google groups.

What, no Garagiola?

Well, maybe he could be the announcer.

That reminds me. The following are the choices available for manager:

Dick Williams, Earl Weaver, Whitey Herzog who would be the top
candidates, but also Dave Garcia, Dick Sisler, Vern Rapp.

Hank Bauer and Red Schoendienst would also qualify, but they are
players on this team.
