Trading Griffey was a great idea (for me)

Hey everyone
I had quite a few discussions with friends and people in here several weeks
back when I pondered trading Griffey in my 14-team mixed league. At the time, I
was in 12th place and going nowhere and Griffey's poor average, lack of runs
scored and steals were killing me. So I dealt Griffey for Magglio Ordonez and
Tony Womack and am now in 8th and continue to move up thanks to Ordonez, who
has been magnificent, and Womack, who has given me much-needed speed.
The key to the deal, for me, was getting Ordonez since I needed him to
provide comperable numbers to Griffey. Well here's what's happened since the
deal:
Ordonez .365-12-45 with 31 runs and 6 steals
Griffey .233-15-33 with 30 runs and 2 steals.
Obviously, Ordonez has been the far superior player as Griffey continues to
struggle with NL pitching. He's putting up great power numbers but nothing
else. I speculated at the time that it could be a season-long struggle for
Junior and it's looking like that may very well be the case.
The point? At the time, the people who told me not to trade Griffey did so
saying you had to wait for the "superstar" to heat up. Well that would've left
me dead had I not made the move since I acquired a tremendous young hitter in
Ordonez and a solid middle infielder (which I needed) in Womack who has started
to run more since the trade and helped me in steals.
So bottom line, if you have Griffey and have been waiting and waiting and
waiting for the rest of his numbers to catch up to his power, you may want to
float him out there in your league to see if someone will bite. I don't know if
you can get a deal as good as mine has worked out but I'm willing to bet
there's at least one owner in your league who's convinced Junior will "bust
out" eventually. If you can find him and he has something you need (I was
looking for power, average and speed for example and got all that with Ordonez
and Womack), then don't hesitate to move Griffey.
It's beginning to reach the point where I think we have to just accept the
fact that while his power numbers will be very strong, the rest of his
production this year is going to be well below what was expected and thus he
will be a detriment to your team since he won't live up to what you paid for
him in an auction or where you drafted him in a straight draft league.

That was definitely a good trade.

Let me throw something out here: the current percentage numbers that Griffey
is putting up is just a few months away from not being an aberation but
rather a trend.

1999 post-All Star: .255/.360/.522 (274 at bats)
2000 pre-All Star: .232/.383/.529 (293 at bats)

Those numbers are eerily similar. Junior's second-half dip last year was
attributed mostly to park effect of Safeco. But now I am beginning to
wonder if his career is just in a tailspin.

Great job unloading Griffey. I play in an auction league $260 draft day with an
in season salary cap of $300. I watched as owners blew big money bidding on
Griffey $36, Green $33, Walker $40 etc... I know I was doing myself right by
getting Bichette $13, Preston Wilson $14, Derek Bell $13 etc... What I am
saying here is that let the owners who swear that you need the big studs to win
spend their money foolishly and you can do much better by getting 14 everyday
players that will put up better stats collectively than say Griff, Walker and a
bunch of $1 bench guys. Owners look at my O and say how does this guy have 51
points in O and I have these studs and only have 33 points. We use com.com in
my league and I have been in 1st for 12 of the 13 periods and currently am 15
points ahead of the 2nd place team. If you play in a fantasy football league
the same holds true. Let the other guys bid high on the studs and you can win
by getting a well rounded 2nd tier group. I will continue to win with both
Boone's and the JT Snow's of roto baseball and the others can suffer with the
big studs.
Good luck to all,

It certainly is something to think about. The "struggling to adapt to a new
league" idea would hold more merit for Junior if there weren't two other
left-handed hitting OFs having great seasons in their first year in the NL
(Edmonds and Green). So I think it goes beyond the new league and all that
although there's no question Griffey's #s against the AL in interleague play
are far superior than against the NL.
I don't know if he's in a career tailspin but my point has been since the
day I traded Griffey that this idea that you must wait for a superstar to "bust
out" is foolish. The longer you hold onto a guy having a bad year, the more
problems you could have--especially if that player is a star you built your
team around.
Granted, I've been lucky that Ordonez has just gone off, but even the
Magglio of 1999 would've been fine with me--outstanding average and excellent
power. Womack isn't on a 50-60 steal pace but he's helped me in steals where I
was flopping.
So if you have Junior and there are some areas of your team that need help
(pitching, average, etc ...) I suggest finding an owner in your league who has
what you need and see if he's one of those guys clinging to the idea that
Junior will "bust out." Even if he does, if you make the trade and get what you
need, your team should improve in the long run.

As an aside, I am curious who Womack replaced in your line-up. Though
still in your favor "to date" and may continue to be through year's end
on the Griffey-Ordonez difference, the other side is also a comparison
of Womack to someone you replaced in your lineup.

He replaced Homer Bush who I would've cut even if I hadn't made the trade.
As far as I'm concerned, Womack for Bush is a huge upgrade.

Go ahead and trade him if you want, but especially for keeper leagues I
would keep him or even trade for him if I didn't have him.

There's no question he's gotten hotter the last few games. But my point was
in my mixed league (non-keeper league) I couldn't afford to keep him any
longer. He was a guy I had built my team around and he was murdering me in 3 of
the 5 categories (avg. runs scored and steals). So I went out and made a trade
to improve in all 5 categories which has happened since I added Ordonez and
Womack.
For me, it was a no-brainer and it's worked out far beyond what I hoped
since Ordonez has been better than I expected. I knew there was a chance
Griffey would get hot but I didn't know when. The fact it happened nearly 2
months after my trade is further evidence that I made the right move because if
I hadn't, I would've fallen so far out of the money it wouldn't have mattered
what he's doing now.
By making the trade, I have a much better offense without Griffey than I had
with him. I've moved up substantially in every offensive category and now have
a chance to make some money in this league.
