Daughter wanted Dad to hunt with her, after getting her all set up, decided
I didn't want to invest another 600 bucks on myself. (and I thought cars
and funerals had lots of accessories) ;)
Buddy gave me an old left hand Bear Whitetail Hunter. No instructions.(he'd
got it from a friend, then decided not to hunt, so sat for years collecting
dust)
The draw length needs to be shortened, and I'd like to decrease it from 70
to 55-60 to start shooting. I'm in a place where the "archery" shop is a
large sporting good store with 18 year old "experts" that had a heck of a
time adjusting daughter's new bow, so am really leary about asking them to
help me with this old beast.
Would really appreciate a scanned manual, or who I might contact. Have
looked at the Bear website, and no info on the old stuff.

Thanks
Mark

I don't have a scanned manual, but I have posted the catalog pic and
information for the 1981 Bear Whitetail Hunter.

Decreasing the draw length will probably be next to impossible,
because you'll need different eccentric wheels for the bow, and I
seriously doubt you will *ever* find any wheels available. If you
really need to adjust the draw length you might be able to take it to
a real bow-shop with some knowledgable bowsmiths, and they may be able
to adjust the cables and shooting string lengths, perhaps a half-inch
or maybe even an inch, but that may prove to be very difficult in
itself and may make the bow inaccurate when shot. But then you'll also
be putting some money into an older bow, which might be better passed
on to a beginner that the bow already fits. I'd personally try to find
another moderately-priced used bow on E-Bay, or in the local want ads,
that was made sometime within the past 5 years.

The draw weight adjustment, if it is in the early 80's model with the
adjustable center idler wheels near the handgrip, will be to remove
the buss cables from the wheels nearest the grip on the bow, loosen a
pivot arm allen screw on the wheel bases and adjust the poundage down,
rotating it away from the handgrip into one of the other notches.
Adjust each idler wheel equally so the bow stays in tune.

Another issue you might have to deal with on an older Bear WTH, is
getting accessories made today, to work with an older-model bow, like
center-shot rests/trigger releases, etc. Before you buy any
accessories, find someone locally who knows more about older equipment
to see if they think an accessory will work on that older bow, because
archery technology has changed quite a bit from back then.

Email Bear and they'll send you a photocopied manual. That's what I did, but
then I sold the bow some time later, wish I'd kept it!

same here

I emailed bear, about a manual for my Bear black Panther, actually a manual
for all their compounds, and it has a section dealing with shortening the
drawlength, all you need to do is put the bow in a bow press and move the
cables to a different slot in the wheel or cam, there is on my black
panther, 4 different positional slots each relating to an inch of
drawlength, seems my bow is customisable from 27 through 31 inches of
drawlength.
the draw weight is 65lbs with I think a 65% let off.

The Bow is sitting in a closet now - I've moved back to traditional archery
with a recurve, of which I have 2 - a 40lb shakespear 'the Mancos' and a
bingham projects 60lb.

laters all
