Hey,

I am looking into jumping a Viper and was wondering from those who have
jumped them what are the pro's and con's of the canopy and how do they
compare with the Stilettos and Batwings????

Thanks for all your rec.skydiving help, and only 44 days to the boogie
in LODI!!!

Blue ones!
Shawn

I've owned both a Viper 120 and a Stiletto 120, and put about 250 jumps on
each.

They have very similar flight characteristics. The Viper seems to surf a
little farther. The Stiletto has more consistently-soft openings. The Viper's
toggle range is a lower.

I like my Viper a lot.

the viper isn't touted as a high performance canopy as the other two, but the
viper has better turns and swoop than the stilettos. the stiletto has a faster
forward speed though(keep in mind that the viper has a higher wing loading
capacity, basicaly- if you fly a stiletto 150 then a viper 135 will suite you
fine). Compare the loading charts at www.skydepot.com. I've never jumped the
batwing but it seems to be a little less popular than the stiletto. bottom
line the viper is a great buy especially at 795 dollars on sale or at end of
the year.

I have over 550 jumps on my 120 Viper. Flys great, swwops are long,
toggle and riser pressure are light. It outflys the batwing. I don't
have enough jumps under a Stilletto to compare the two.

how are your openings? 2 huys on my dz (viper 170 and 120) say the openings
are really long...800+ consistently on the 170..... yes/no ?

I never really cared for the Batwing, and I usually jump a
Stiletto 150. I've put several jumps on a Viper 120 and the surfs are
great. The Viper has a very powerful flare, and fairly light riser and
toggle pressure. I don't think that the Viper is as 'radical' in the air
as the Stiletto 120 I've jumped. Both are great canopies, so if you're
limited by funds, the Viper would be an excellent choice. The Viper
packs easier too!

My Viper 172 opens very crisp, even when I roll the shit out of the nose. Then
again, I am probably still going kind of fast when I open (freefly transition
to track transition to flat to pull). Another guy I know broke a line on his
Viper after not allowing enough altitude to slow down after a vertical jump. I
did a belly jump (after packing like I normally do, rolling the nose tight) and
scared the shit out of myself with the long opening (first time I heard that
third alarm on my Dytter). Overall, I love my Viper; even though I don't do
hook turns or anything radical like that I still get what I consider adequate
surfs and soft landings after a few mild turns coming in. Plus, it is so easy
to pack...not slippery at all. I've noticed the prices have been creeping up
over the past year, but you can still get good deals through the website (I
bought mine used for $700 and it was almost brand new; from a heavier camera
guy who thought the openings were too hard). Good luck,
Leif

dood, u must be opening headdown without a transition............you roll it
and it still opens hard? ........everyone i know that jumps one snivels
forever......hell, i cant roll the nose or it takes too damn long, in fact, i
kinda try to open the nose before i pull the tail around and i still snivel for
almost 1000 feet.........opening a viper in a track will give you a
lineover......it dosent like that

Have to agree, I don't roll my nose at all and I have a partial mesh
slider and still snivels for 1000 ft. I also never heard of a "crisp
opening Viper"

I've had plenty of "crisp" openings on my Viper 120 (even with the nose
rolled). My Stiletto 120 was definitely better behaved as far as openings are
concerned. But the Viper seems to be better behaved now that I've slightly
modified my packing. I use it for video without much concern. And I love the
landings (longer surfs than my Stiletto 120 had).

Once you spend a day jumping an Extreme, you'll never be able to go back
to a "regular" elliptical.
It is one amazing parachute. It's everything they hype it up to
be...and then some.

So have your money set aside before you demo it. You'll need it right
away....trust me. :)

Never flow a stilleto so i have no opinion there
as for my viper i love it

opening are soft 800 to 1000 snivels
flies great and swoops well

best way to find out though is to fly both and form your own opinion

I know Dave, I know. I've put about 35-40 jumps on EXTreme's ranging from 77
to 93 sq ft. That's why I'm itchin' so badly for one!

It'll have to wait until...dare I say it...next year.
