I'm looking for info on weight vests. What is the starting weight people
need, what are good weight increments for adding weight to the vest, what
are the expected prices? I'm looking at possibly making some out of chain
maille (fabric made out of interlinked steel rings like knight armor) and
want to get an idea if there is any market for what I'm thinking. They will
cost more, but they are comfortable, maintenance free, evenly distributed
weight that can keep a branch out of your ribs if you should be so unlucky.
Please reply to the newsgroup, I don't check the reply email I post to avoid
spam.

The February issue of Parachutist had a feature article on a clinic on
wearing weights. You might look for one of them.
You might also talk to Jimbo. He was featured in the article photographs,
and must have learned a lot from the clinic, because Rev Jim says he doesn't
float any more. Can't hurt to ask.

How about a bullet proof vest. Weigh the same as my purse, easier to hang on to
in free fall.

Well if it worked out that well for you, I hope you tipped the clinic
director well.

JAKAL (rk_l...@hotmail.com) wore a chain mail weight vest during the
300-way attempts in 2000. He made it himself. He occasionally posts
here.

4 pounds is about the minimum that people wear, it's not worth the
hassle for less than that. Increments of 1 pound are normal.

I have never liked the vests because they dig into your shoulders.
I use weight belts made from ankle weights. They can be bought at
Wal-Mart, KMart Target etc for about $12.00.
For $5 more, I got a local rigger or jumpsuit repair person to sew them
together & add a snap fastener on a tape belt.
These can be worn on the inside or outside of your jumpsuit. Either way
they can be readily jettisoned in case of a water landing.
