I ran across this in a "wierd law" listing on the net:
Florida:
1. Women may be fined for falling asleep under a hair dryer, as can the
salon owner.
2. A special law prohibits unmarried women from parachuting on Sunday or
she shall risk arrest, fine, and/or jailing.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
3. If an elephant is left tied to a parking meter, the parking fee has to
be paid just as it would for a vehicle.
4. <SARASOTA> It is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a
swimsuit.
5. Men may not be seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown.
I don't know if there is anything to it, but I thought I would pass it along.
Is there any Fla. lawyers out there who could verify this?

I'm not a FL jumper, but I am 98% sure that the law does exist.
If I wasn't a lazy SOB, I'd look it up just to remove the 2% of
doubt. However, since I'm not being *paid* to do the legal
research required to verify the law, I respectfully decline. ;-)

I'm not a fla lawyer or cop, but this does come up every once in a while.
I'v seen that same law posted before, and never seen it refuted. There
are a lot of stupid laws still on the books. Like in Texas, it's illegal to
carry a pair of wire-cutters across the county line. (throwback from the
cattle rustling days)

Ok, then what happens if a single woman jumped out of a plane on Sunday
in Florida but got married in a CReW stack on the way down?
Cheryl
I'd guess she'd be in violation. If, however, she got married in freefall,
she'd be okay, since she hadn't technically _parachuted_.
If she got _annulled_ in a CRW stack, she'd be in trouble again. So it'd
be best to consummate the marriage while still in the air....

Don't know where you heard it from, but it's false. I just checked the statutes and the
only listing for parachutes are definition sections on airports and littering. There is
no listing for skydive (or any derivative).

Don't you think its just a little strange that it would be against the
law in one state but not in any other state/province in North America?

No. Many states/counties/cities have laws/ordinances unique to a
particular locale.

No. States are sovereign entities in their own right.
Whatever powers are not constitutionally reserved
for the federal gov't are considered to be within the
states' purview. One of the basic ideas behind this
is that states are better able to meet the needs of
their citizens than a federal bureacracy that could
be thousands of miles away. At least, that is
basically how we do it in the US.
How the great state of FL ever decided that it was
in the best interest of unmarried females to not
skydive on Sunday is beyond me. Maybe they
thought these women should be in church looking
for decent husbands instead of hanging out at the
dz. Maybe FL wanted to get rid of skydivers by
making it difficult for us to procreate? ;-)
If I ever get around to it I will try to look up that
law to see if it does or doesn't exist.
