It's supposed to be *cool*. Don't ask me why but check out the
"Freak Brothers" film. Some have said it lets them *feel* the
air better with their feet and so they can fly better - hogwash.

The top 10 reasons why people wear sandals or jump barefoot.

10. So your dogs can breath.
9. To cover up the smell of your farts in the plane.
8. So you can pick your toes on the ride to altitude.
7. If you're sandwiched just right, you can pick the toes
of the person behind you.
6. So the wind can tickle your tootsies in freefal.
5. To cool off on a hot summer day.
4. To look cool.
3. Some skydivers don't know how to tie shoe laces.
2. Because Tom Piras sometimes skydives barefoot.

AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON TO WEAR SANDALS IS.......

1. Because sports equipment manufacturers sell "specially
desgined" "SKYDIVER SANDALS."

I wonder if Roger Clifton (our Aussie friend) takes that stuff
into account in his freefall simulation programs?

Why do I see so many skydivers wearing sandals or
jumping barefoot?

No, Al, it *is* cool. Way cool. And it is possible to fly much more

precisely using your toes as individual control surfaces. If you're
really hot, you polish your nails, which reduces parasite drag, giving
you a faster fall rate and flatter track. You may scoff, but
have you ever watched anyone's shoelaces whipping in freefall?

Sandals are something of a compromise. They reduce toe authority, and
while they don't have as much drag as those moon-boot Reeboks, they
can't compare to (aerodynamically) clean bare feet. However, they
make a bad spot easier to forgive, and just might save your tootsies
when you miscalculate that front-riser hook onto the taxiway...

This may sound corny to you, but I like to feel the air flow with my
feet! Further more, both my main and reserve are squares and so far I
have never come close to injuring my feet when landing. (I wear sandals.)

Because once you're down to tank-top or no top and shorts the next logical
things to remove in order to stay cool on a nice, warm Central Valley
day are the shoes and socks. You live in sunny Fresno, don't you? :-)
