I think JUMP is the mother of all skydiving video background music.
some really excellent ones:
"the whole of the moon" by the waterboys (about BASE)
"fall free" by alan parsons project
"one day to fly" by alan parsons project
the usuals:
"high speed dirt" by megadeath
almost anything by joe satriani
"free falling" and "learning to fly" from tom petty
"jump" and "right now" by van halen
"mighty wings" top gun soundtrack
some others:
"skydiver" by marty balin (sucks) "cut it away" by jackson browne
(nothing to do with skydiving, but funny title) "eight miles high" the
byrds "spirit in the sky" norman greenbaum "don't fear the reaper" by
blue oyster cult (great for static line) "knock on wood" by ??? (actually
about a whuffo, not a skydiver, but it's fun) "fly like an eagle" steve
miller band
some cool clips from the above songs:
-----------------------------------
the door was opened and a wind appeared
the curtains blew and then he appeared
saying "don't be afraid
come on baby
don't fear the reaper
you'll be able to fly . . .
----------------------------------
fall free
freedom's in the air
it's calling you
your heart is there
----------------------------------
yes you climbed on that ladder
with the wind in your sails
then you passed like a comet
blazing a trail
too high too far too soon
but you saw the whole of the moon
---------------------------------
picture a wing held together with string
then one day to fly
---------------------------------
i'm not a coward i've just never been tested
i'd like to think that if i was i would pass
i look at the tested and think "there but for the grace go i"
i might be a coward - i'm afraid of what i might find out -
-----------------------------------

also "I believe I can fly" by R. Kelley
"Fly like a beagle(oops) eagle" Steve Miller or Seal
"Momentary lapse of reason" Pink Floyd

here's a cute little tune, whose length (1:06) will
actually fit the time of the freefall part:
"45 Seconds of Ecstasy"
written: Martha Minter Bailey
vocals: Susan Wood
can be found on the Meat Loaf album:
Welcome to the neighborhood
(goes s.th. like: 45 seconds of ecstacy, how it comes
right back to me, fly so high and feel so free,
45 seconds of ecstacy, ....)
another one I sometimes listen to on my way to
the DZ is a Blood Sweat & Tears song, goes like
" ... hideho hidehi, gonna get me a piece of the sky,..."
and it's great to holler along. (yeah ... that's why
I s.t. arrive rather hoarse at the DZ)

A lot of stuff "sounds good" with things happening at high speed, even if

"I Wanna Be Sedated" - Ramones ("Take to the airport, get me on a plane, hurry

Anything by "Gravity Kills"...(Goes without saying)
"Crash" by the Primitives (preferably the '94 mix)
"Long Way Down" - band name escapes me

Don't bother with static line. Go freefall and get anything from Dick

Daniel Zacharias
Airsu...@aol.com
"Sir Chops-a-Lot"
Raven II, 4 Micro Raven 150, Micro Raven 135, Strong Tandem Reserve
"Careful with that Axe, Eugene" might be another good one, especially
if the overdub syncs the scream with your exit. Wish I'd thought of
that for my first jump. Come to think of it, there's probably a lot
of good jump soundtrack material in early Floyd.

"Fall Down" and "Fly From Heaven" by Toad The Wet Sprocket, on the

The videographer on my Tandem used "Fly From Heaven" for all the

Oh, good ... I'm not the only one with alternative style
preferences in skydiving video music ...
I prefer classic Osmonds ... let's see ... One Bad Apple,
Sweet & Innocent by little Donnie ... and perhaps even
Down by the Lazy River (good background for those off-dz
landings) ... classic Jackson 5 is good too ... the really
old stuff ... The Love You Save and ABC (particularly good
for those debriefs where your jm is telling you how simple
the maneuver you just *ucked up is)
Shame a lot of this stuff is hard to get on CD, though ...
Funny, I've never actually gotten any of my "requests"

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that Steppenwolf covered 3DN...
Reminds me of when I realized most Led Zeppelin tunes were covers...kind
of disapointed at first and then thought wow the original is really cool
too!
By the way, Run DMC didn't write "Walk This Way"...hey: Sweet Emotion
would be a good background song as well.

come on lets have some originality it seems every single skydiving video
around has jump on it i reccomend song 2 by blur it is going to be our
team song and it makes a great background.

Here's a few that come to mind from my CD collection that no-one's
mentioned (most except for the first few would be crap for skydiving
videos, but they have appropriate titles).
Supergrass - Sun Hits The Sky
Radiohead - High and Dry, Ripcord
Oasis - Up In The Sky, D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman, Live Forever, Cloudburst
The Stone Roses - Where Angels Play
Primal Scream - Higher Than The Sun, I'm Coming Down, Big Jet Plane
Inspiral Carpets - Going Down, Irresistable Force, Party In The Sky,
The Wind Is Calling Your Name
The Bluetones - Expecting to Fly (OK, so it's an album- but it's got
the sound of a plane taking off at the start...?)
I could go on all night.. (hmm, I feel a compilation tape coming on..)
Hope you've heard at least some of these . o O (Hmmm, I know Oasis- they
sound too much like the Beatles- I know, I've heard _both_ their singles
on the radio :-)

You've been watching Drop Zone !!!!!
Yup that is an excellent tune for skydiving a video .
I just heard one that might work - I don't remeber the name of it, but
it's about space...something about Captain Tom and the Spaceship, I think.

Magic Carpet Ride by <choke> THREE DOG NIGHT??? <gag>
Try Steppenwolf. You know, John Kay & Co.
Why Me? by Planet P is a good choice.
Also Sprach Zarasthura is a perennial favorite.
Don't Touch Me There by the Tubes might
work for funneled formations, and Mondo Bondage
could be good for Tandem.
Depending on the flow of the skydive, there are many
possibilities.
I think you'd have to bounce before rap would be
appropriate ("I'd rather die than listen to this!" thud).
Blue skies,
Winsor
Not really a skydive theme, but one I've seen/heard for AFF that I liked
is "Where the streets have no name" by U2. There are probably also
others from them that would work. "Bullet the blue sky" maybe?
Anyway, find something that you like and that conveys the feeling of the
dive *for you*, rather than trying to find something with a fitting
title.

Actually, there were two songs similar to that. The Bowie tune that Draper
mentioned, and the version I think you're talking about by Peter Schilling (I
think. It's from the first half of the 80s).
The Bowie song is slow. The Schilling song almost has a dance beat to it.
The "4,3,2,1 earth below us drifting falling floating weightless coming coming
hooooooome" was from the schilling version.

The Stones' "waiting on a friend" does it for me. Of course there's
always Boston's "more than a feeling" which *must* be the basis of a
great skydive clip somewhere.
The local favorite for tandems however is "walking on sunshine", which
is not as corny (or obvious) as VH's "jump", but still says it all.

One late night hanging out in the video shack we were playing around with
rhythms for CRW. We finally came up with ..... classical. Yup, that stuff on
public radio. My personal favorite is "Piano Concerto #1" by Keith Emerson
from the Emerson, Lake & Palmer "Works Vol. 1" album. Granted ELP isn't
exactly classical but the rhythm is right.
