Death of a legend---- Jim "Kong" Bohr, a father of modern RW dies in
Illinois.
------------------------------------------------------
Weird Telephone message, a voice out of the past singing, "Ding-Dong Kong
is dead, found him shot-in-the-head…. 10,9,8,7,6… five little Indians
left…" I figgured that it was a singing telegram telling me somebody died.

Jim Bohr shot and killed ------
Jim "Kong" Bohr, The captain of some of the best teams in the USA, part of
the 1st 8-way built outside of California, mentor to Freak Brothers Carl
FB#1 and Roger Nelson FB#2, and Cicero FB#3 was caught dead this week.
C.O.D. bullet in the back of the head. Jim was the most agile and
coordinated human I have ever met. He was a high-diving champion; Xth
degree black belt in several arts, semi-pro football player, champion
skater, pilot… an amazing man.

*The Art of Freefall RW*, The 1st book on skydiving, is dedicated to Jim and
people like him who defined perfection in flight with their skydiving.
Jim’s 10-way teams were the best in the world in the early 70s. Andy
Keech’s book, *Skies Call* is dedicated to, "The James Gang, who took me
into their world of team precision." Several years before there was a word
for "sequential RW," Jim Bohr’s James Gang Team was the 1st doing
formations. After the speed 10-way, we would do a backloop-10-way. Or: a
sequence of other formations.

Jim was a BIG believer in skin-tight jumpsuits and a fast fall rate. He
popularized the cloth *frap Hat.* He was part of the Hinckley team, one
of the few invited to the first 10-way National Championships (1972—we
placed 4th). Trained by "the Boogie King" Fedo, Jim jumped for years first
at Hinckley and at Roger Nelson’s DZ.

Ding-Dong, Kong is dead…. -- Jim, who was also known as "Kong" (as in
King-Kong, another big, mean dude) loved conflict. The local police would
call him to go into bars and break up fights. Incredibly aware, most of us
believed that the only way to "take him out" would be to shoot him from
behind. Yep.

"… five little Indians left…" Then there were five. Of the 10 skydivers on
the James Gang, (1970-72) there are just five still living.
Dead James Gang:
"Kong" Jim Bohr, Captain, 1996, gun shot
"Streak" Jim Mahr, 1992, pilot, Hinckley Beech crash
"Waldo" Lou Jecker, 1976, bounced at Z-Hills with Exitus
"Dirty" Billly Bishop, 1975, car crash, Mexico
Joan Jurney, 1975? Car crash (I think was 1-of the world’s best
skydiver’s, one of only two females competing then?)

Not yet dead James Gang:
"Fedo" Bob Federman, the boogie king, still lives in Aurora Ill with
his wife Jeanie.
Tim Titava -- whereabouts unknown
John Tierney, communications Tech. In Florida.
"Pirate" 1-legged skydiver -- whereabouts unknown
Pat Works, does vRW and FreeFly skydives at Perris

So, here is a toast to a damn fine skydiver, Jim Bohr!!!

--- To love Jim Bohr was hard; to respect him was fundamental
smooth/automatic.

Hi Pat, I know this is very, very old, but... Lou Jecker went in at the 1975 Turkey meet, not 1976. Sabrina Gruber when in 40 minutes later from the same C-46.

I will always miss Jim, Lou, Roger, Carl, Whitey, etc. My list of departed skydivers I knew has grown to double digits...
