I need a new helmet, and am thinking of getting a freefly helmet to use
for both skydiving and snowboarding. How do the composites hold up to
the cold? I like the looks of the Nvertigo, and know there will be
tons of opinions here.

Thanks,

Vint

All of the skydiving helmets I've worn (Bonehead, Hawkeye, Nvertigo)
haven't had much in the way of padding inside. I doubt they'd do much
for you if you ran into a tree snowboarding.

You might be better off with a ski/snowboard helmet skydiving.

I have a Boeri skiing helmet that I use for jumping. It's not too
big, and it's got a lot of padding too. They come in some pretty cool
patterns and styles and don't cost nearly as much as some of the
skydiving helmets.

I've tried using my skydive helmet for outdoor sports activities. I find that
skydiving helmets are quite uncomfortable if
- you have to wear them for several hours. Skydive helmets were designed to be
worn for a couple of minutes, not for a whole day of snowboarding.
- if you are doing something that makes you sweat. Skydive helmets are not
designed for transpiration.

On the other hand: snowboarding/skying with your skydiving camcorder on your
head gives great footage, especially if you do some snow-RW with a friend (or if
you follow him in the snowboarder's funpark!).

Cold is no problemo (unless you're snowboarding above 15000ft?).

True true. One thing though, is that if you close an eye to aim your
shot it tends to throw off your depth perception, which is not a good
thing while skiing, especially while looking in one direction and
skiing in another.

While you're at it, try blasting down a narrow tree lined trail on a
snowmobile with your skydiving helmut cam. That's some scary video.
Motorcycles are good for that too.

No video here, but some pics of doing that kind of thing:

Do you keep one eye closed while shooting skydivers? Are you using a wide-angle lens?

With some of them I find it's best to keep both eyes closed! ;-)

TREES we're not afraid of no stinkin' trees!!!!!
Actually BJ Worth's daughter received her Bonehead Helmet immediately
following Symposium last year.
Just a few weeks later I received a call and e-mail. Guess what...

She ran into a tree head first...... She claims the Bonehead saved her life.

At Bonehead we actually have a sport helmet available now that can be used for a
wide range of sports as well as skydiving.
It is being tested on the ski slopes by professionals and has gotten only positive
reviews. Low Profile. Sexy. Strong Carbon Fiber.
Anybody that would like to see a picture of it please just ask.
