Hy Everybody!

I am thinking of buying a new canopy - I don`t know wheter I should take a PD SABRE 170 or a PD SPECTRE 170. Could someone help me making the decision easier for me.

Thanks Shiva

Hi Shiva, i have flow both these canopies in these sizes and smaller. i found the spectre a little faster and was a tad more agile. having said that i think the sabre is a great canopy to convert to after student status, if you already have a few jumps under your belt and have been jumping a sabre but want that 'little' extra, i would go for the spectre.

Packing might be a deciding factor, sabre 9 cell, spectre 7 cell. the 7 cell will pack a smaller volume.

i think eventually the standard PD canopies will be replaced by the sabre as the entry level canopies.

price wise there is not much in it ...... a few dollars/pounds at most.

try and find a canopy that you can 'test' jump a couple of times or go to a DZ and rent both types.

at the end of the day it's a close call ........ and when this happens i look for the 'yes' factor when flying.

judge it by the amount of upward lift you get at the corners of your mouth :-)

Spectre handles a lot better, better turns, better flares.  It's a nice canopy, better than the sabre

You can buy a new PISA Hornet for around $950. It's a very lightly elliptical all ZP canopy good for a beginner, made of the same ZP fabric as the Triathlon, so it easy to pack. Turns quicker than the Saber but its not as radical as a Stiletto. Opens as soft as a Stiletto, may just a little quicker, and glide is a little flatter than a Saber. Landings are similar to a Saber, flattens out nice and shuts downs nice with lots of lift . Its a much nicer canopy than the Saber.

Call PD. They will send you a Demo canopy for 2 weeks for about $25
(actually about $40 by the time you ship it back). The 170 is there most
popular size in the Spectre. I loved it but found a used Batwing for a good
price so went with it instead.

I jumped both and bought the sabre.  I liked the spectre too, but it opened a lot slower.  If you pack the sabre right, it won't slam you, but will still open in a few hundred feet.............KM

Sabre's are like skydiving.. You can do everything right and something bad can
still happen. It's not a matter of if, but when. I promise that if you always
pack it right, one day it will still slam you.

I agree, I have a Spectre and made over 100 jumps with it. All I can say is:
get one you won't regret it.

Most Sabre owners won't "want" to agree,
finally correct information from someone
who has/is jumped/ing a Sabre. "the Grand slam"
is it a "threat" or a "promise" ?
looking forward to the:
"my canopy opens nicer than yours" thread...

A novices 2 cents worth.

I have a Sabre 170, loaded about 1.4:1 (I put on some weight since I
bought it - it's all muscle 'cause of working out - honest)

Anyhow, I just push in the nose, no rolls, make a front and back pocket
out of the slider (important) and roll the tail about the same as I have
for every other canopy. About medium.

My biggest problem is it can open very slowly on sub terminals (dropping
static line students, then getting out after)

It's never slammed me, and the only nasty opening I've had on it is a
brake coming unstowed (at quincy in a busy sky - not fun).

I've got 100+ jumps on it, I keep hearing bad things about Sabers, but it
opens nicely, and consistently almost every time.

My only gripe is it's glide ratio sucks. And it falls out of the sky in
turns - but that's cause I'm now at 240+ lbs exit weight

I'm looking at getting a Saphire 190 in the early summer. Flatter glide
ratio, turns as fast, and a more practical wing loading for my number of
jumps. I've heard good things, but I've got to try to do a few jumps on
one. The down side is there are none in Ireland. So I gotta get state
side for a few weeks.

Unless Icarus do a demo program and will ship to the Emerald Isle ????

Does any of you guys have experience landing a heavily loaded spectre lets
say 1:4 or 1:5 or more? how do they behave, what about in a straight in
landing?

At 210 body weight, I loved the Specter 170. The 150 probably would have
been fine as well. Great surfs even if I made straight approaches (of
course not as long). Nice tiptoe landings. It will dive out of the sky
though.

I jumped a rental sabre until buying my own gear which is a spectre.

After being slammed by the sabre, I really do appreciate the slow
openings of the spectre. If you make enough jumps in a weekend, a
slow opening canopy is a necessity.

I'd recommend the spectre over a similiar sized sabre anyday.

If you want accurate information on any Performance Designs canopies, call the
manufacturer. The advice you get from one man might be relevent to him and not
to you. Things like wing loading, experience, drop zone elevation, and plain
flying style should help you determine the canopy for you, just be wary,
opinions are like you know what, everyone's got one.

I have about 2000 jumps on Sabre 150s. I got a Spectre 150 demo
from PD last fall. Spectre packed smaller than the Sabre. Flew
and turned faster and landed about the same. I now own 2
Spectre 135s. Since I jump camera, I got Darcon line (cushy
openings). I couldn't believe how much difference the lines
make in airspeed. The 135 with Dacron is slower than the 150
with micro lines. And yes, no matter how you pack a Sabre, it
will introduce you to the Goddess of Whack
occasionally.

The Safire sounds like it could be a good choice for your needs.

It will open progressively, fly fast, have a safe stall speed, and fly stable in slow
flight. It is also a very competitive and zippy turf surfer when loaded.

Icarus do have a European Demo program. Email sa...@icaruscanopies.com.

Also Icarus offer a 31 Day Satisfaction Guarantee. So you can just buy one if you
wish and if you don't love it you've got 31 days to return it for a full refund.
