The openings continue: Sugarbush, VT; Killington, VT (reopen); Vail,
CO; Sunday River, ME; Okemo, VT; Wolf Creek, CO; etc., etc. The
season is off and running now.
So are the No-Bull Ski Reports. Now that mountains are opening,
people are posting trip reports already. Stop in to see what others
have posted, and post your trip report while you're there.
With regard to Wolf Creek, can you imagine opening with 60" of natural
base??!! Contributing Writer Troy Dodgion has provided an in-depth
report, complete with photos to make your mouth water and your ski wax
melt with envy. It's in "Features".
The last photo of "When Skiing Was" from Mt. Mansfield has been
archived, and a new one has been rotated to the forefront: skiing at
Dickinson's Farm in Lisbon, NH (near Franconia) in the late 1930's.

to the attention of the Attorney General's office.
1) "Dennis R. Moore" today wrote my service provider to accuse me of
sending unsolicited e-mail. How can that be when *he* opted to
subscribe, *he* confirmed the subscription notice, then *he* never
unsubscribed? No class. Get a clue. Simply follow the
instructions, go to www.listbot.com, and unsubscribe or use
FirstTracks...@listbot.com. Seems to be simple to me.
Apparently, not to everyone. <g> Apparently it's not geared to he
lowest common denominator.
2) There's one - count 'em, *one* - cookie on the entire site, one
which only asks your name to personalize the greeting and tell you
what's changed since the last update. How does this translate into
"tons of cookies"?
3) I have no advertisers. How can I be a "blatant spamming
advertiser"??!!
4) If java script is crashing your system - and no one else's - why do
you return??!! Sorry, but I don't have a gun to your head forcing you
to visit the web site.
5) If anyone has trouble unsubscribing, they've never written to me
about it. Geez, my e-mail address is all over the site, plus I post
to Usenet 1x/week - how hard can it be to find me to ask?
Get a life, people. There are too many compliments that we receive
from the service to be dragged down by you two. Folks, don't believe
everything that you read.

Woops, one java request for my name followed by 5 cookie requests
cookie requests (declined of course) repeated every time i change pages.

As Mike Naughton pointed out, those banners are placed there by
FortuneCity, the web service provider in exchange for providing free
web hosting services. A buddy of mine is setting me up on his own
server, at which time all of that goes the way off the dinosaur. That
said, it seems to be taking a bit longer than exxpected.
>all that said, the content looks pretty interesting - I just hate repeatedly
>clicking no on all the cookie alerts.
I'm surprised that it asks you more than once, because it only exists
in the main welcome frame. Maybe it's time to rethink that strategy,
I'll grant you. However, given the fact that the data isn't collected
and all that it does is give you a reference point for the last time
that you were there, I'm wondering what harm does it cause?
>uh great PR Mark,
>even if I was lying about the number of cookies on your site,
Well, if you're going to have a valid complaint, the least that you
could do is be honest about it. To exaggerate in this instance isn't
employing hyperbole, it's flat-out lying. What was the point in lying
about it? To make yourself look better, or to make the site appear
worse than you really think it is?
>dont you think a more conciliatory attitude would make you look better
>in the eyes of those customers you are seeking to attract
Well, I'll tell you this: when Dennis writes to me today (as well as
my ISP) complaining that I'm sending him unsolicited e-mail (I'm not,
he not only specifically requested it, but did so *twice*), then has
the balls to write to me calling me an "ASSHOLE" (his choice of words,
and choice of capitals - not mine) because he hasn't got the gray
matter to simply unsubscribe as the e-mail itself instructed him to
do, well....my feathers get rustled, not to mention when "Jonathan"
writes:
>this site sucks raw eggs
Such a way with words...
>endless cookies
lies...
>and never mind java
Show me a web page that doesn't...
>blatant spamming advertiser
More lies....
Tell me, you wouldn't be defensive and pissed??!!
How many times do I have to go through this? I do this because I love
to. I don't make a friggin' dime off of it. I *spend* money on it.
I do it because I love promoting the sport, and it's the "thank-you"
e-mails that I get that make it all worthwhile. Period. If you want
to stomp on a guy for doing that, be my guest - that seems pretty low
to me. Seems to me that if you're not interested, simply don't visit.
Period.

OK, the cookies are gone. So is all of the java, save for the Beatnik
plug-in and the drop-down Table of Contents list. That stuff that was
removed was experimental, anyway. 'Tis gone.
>misquouting me out of context does not mean I am admitting I lied about
>that. I did not lie, nor will I indulge in exchanging accusations with
>you after this post.
Uh, Jonathan, this is what you wrote in an earlier post:
>uh great PR Mark,
>even if I was lying about the number of cookies on your site
Then you wrote:
>Even worse, I do not like being
>called a liar.
Uh, Jonathan: you called yourself one.
I'm not into having a flame war, other than defending myself against
childish rants. Like you, I too don't like my comments taken out of
context, which is why I responded as I did, above. As pointed out in
an earlier, separate posting, the one cookie and most of the java is
gone. If it was bugging people that much, who am I to argue with
that?
What set me off this morning was having some joker accuse me of
sending unsolicited e-mail then ranting here about it, when nothing is
further from the truth. To me, that's the epitome of poor Netiquette,
and to have those accusations broadcast throughout Usenet really
frosts me.
>OK, the cookies are gone. So is all of the java, save for the Beatnik
>plug-in and the drop-down Table of Contents list. That stuff that was

Sorry for the fifty milllion postings on this subject tonight, but I
wanted to add one more thing for the naysayers - the audio tracks are
gone, too. I just spent 4 hours finding them all...
FUCKING SHUT UP THE PAIR OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I say again, nice site - lots of content that I will explore at my leisure.
Your responsiveness to complaints is also an example to others.
That said, there are still 2 cookie requests per page. Not heinous but
thought you would want to know. Given what you've done, I assume your page
host is the
source. In regards to your question: "what's the harm", my answer is,
none.
No harm - no foul. However, I dislike cookies as a matter of policy - don't
like
anyone writing to my computator. Don't like having liddle bits of info
about me
scattered all over the net. I'm no techie, and I don't really understand it
all,
but since I've turned on options to alert me of all cookie requests - and
turn them
down always; I've been receiving less spam.

I made two attempts at unsubscribing via the listbot address given in
Marc's e-mail. Both unsubscribe messages bounced. 3 messages were sent
to Marc's address, asking to be removed from his list. All were
ignored (they did not bounce so I assume they were received). The
complaint to marc's isp was borne of frustration. Now comes Marc to
insult my intelligence, claim that I am clueless and lacking class.
Draw your own conclusions.
Thank you for listening. Crashing is not much fun. Now please post the
non-java URL along with the home URL.

First of all, chill out. I've gone in and manually removed you.
Believe me, not only am I happy to get you out of my hair, but I'm
more than happy to do that for anyone who, for one reason or another,
can't unsubscribe. You, by the way, are the first one who hasn't.
>3 messages were sent
>to Marc's address, asking to be removed from his list.
Let's set the record straight from my end. I got 2 messages from you,
both received nearly concurrently (and both read by me at the same
time). The first was whining that you've begged me on numerous
occasions to stop sending you unsolicited e-mail. I fall back on my
earlier explanation that it was hardly unsolicited as you registered
to receive it, and I had never - I repeat, *never* - heard from you
before.
The second message was the one where you referred to me as "you
asshole", and said that you were contacting my ISP (which you did, you
pain) and said that next was to contact my "advertisers" (which I
don't have).
>All were
>ignored (they did not bounce so I assume they were received).
When you assume....
>Draw your own conclusions.
That's the only place where we agree, Dennis. Draw your own
conclusions.
>This e-mail address belongs to a Washington State resident.

Geez, a little anal about that, aren't you?!
>Thank you for listening. Crashing is not much fun. Now please post the
>non-java URL along with the home URL.
Actually, there is no "true" non-java URL. The only trouble that
turning off java will cause you is due to the primary mode of
navigation being java-based. If you click on the "No java? No sweat."
link, it takes you to a conventional Table of Contents list, to allow
you to navigate the site without using java.
It's difficult for me to make a non-java mirror of the site. For one,
as was pointed out earlier FortuneCity automatically puts banner ads
on every HTML document that I upload, and it has java controls. For
another, the site is over 9 Mb of material - to make a duplicate, even
if I could prevent FC from putting their banners, it would nearly max
out my server allowance. Again, I haven't been paying for the site
because it's not designed to make me money, it's just a hobby - and
one which is taking much too much of my time. Much more, and my
wife'll be dragging me into divorce court by my hair (and I'm not
saying if it's by the long ones or the short ones!).

has been to our "Ski News"section. We use four different robots to
