Will be attempting my first P-tex repair tomorrow night. Will be using
iron and ribbon. Am concerned if using the citrus based solvents will
really do the best job of cleaning out that last bit of wax residue so
the p-tex will stick optimally.

Traditionally, I'm a die hard solvent sniffer. Never switched to the
water based stuff for my parts washer in bike maintenance because I
never met a water based cleaner that could equal the organics. I am
content to use citrus in occasional board cleaning, but really want
the best for sticking P-tex....

Should it be MEK? Acetone? Laquer Thinner? Benzine? Other? I promise
to ventilate.....

Saw an old reference to ski cleaning with Varsol. Not sure what that
is in real solvent names.

TIA

I use BioAct VSO citrus based solvent. Its made by Petroferm in Fernandino
Beach, Florida. All natural, 100% safe for the environment. Hell, I think
you could even drink it.
This stuff strips wax like there's no tomorrow. @ around 15.00/gal its
pretty reasonably priced. Use it in your parts washer too.
After stripping, I wipe the board down with a little alcohol to remove the
last of the solvent and its ready for repair.

Good luck,
Joe

You will be fine using an organic solvent, such as Citrasolve, to clean your
base before the repair work. Be certain to clean the area thoroughly. Let it
dry completely. To assist the p-tex in bonding etch or gouge the divot to
provide teeth for the bond. Avoid using chemical solvents when cleaning your
base. Organics work sufficiently, and are less harmful to the environment.
In any case, if you use a base cleaner of any type be prepared to wax
immediately - base cleaner dries the p-tex. It's harsh! (In your case, you
will wax after the repair is completed).

Does anyone recommend/not recommend Simple Green as a base cleaner? I just
happen to have a gallon of the stuff in my garage and was wondering if I
could/should use it?

Simple Green is essentially the same composition as Citrasolve, which means
it is fine to use for cleaning the base.

How can I get hold of this VSO stuff in So. Calif?
$15/gal sure beats $7 or $8 for a few onces!

Thanks,
Kerry
