**********STYLE KING*********
To take a look at the evolution of the snowboard clothing industry
you'll find a fast and furious mutation of wide ranging styles and
functions. The whole sport of snowboarding has leapt at such a rapid
rate that constant change has became inevitable.
I remember 1985, coming back from the CSUS Ski Swap. I had a
pair of top of the line used ski boots and a water resistant (unless it
got wet) ski jacket. No I wasn't a skier I just needed some liners for
my Sorel boots and a jacket that didn't have fur around the collar.
You see at this time, snowboard companies were still trying to figure
out the snowboard, so they left the apparel to the huge ski industry.
The rest of my ensemble consisted of a yellow rain slicker pair of
pants that gatored to the boot via duct tape. A pair of Hot Fingers
ski gloves (named after the method of purchase) and a wool beanie
that my dad had used in 50's to check his oil. Regardless of the
jumble that I was wrapped in, it did serve its role in the game of
elements and after it is function, never fashion.
When I got to the hill I could hear the chuckles before I even
entered the parking lot. But I was here on a mission, determined to
govern the path of this sledding machine. The lady in the ticket
window told me the snow park was one exit back, but that poor
women would never know the calling. So there I stood amongst the
elite Bogner, Descente and North Face. Intimidation blanketing
my spirit I hobbled to the lift line avoiding any eye contact with
those supreme beings. With one plank below me like a sore thumb I
advance the mountain alone still unsettled with my fetish. As I
reached the top my feeble legs struggled to find some control for the
exit. The uncertainty weighted my finesse as I jerked and flailed
down the run way then on to my face. This wouldn't be the last time
doubt overcame an endeavor. In fact it's that same apprehension
that drives me to fall every time I go. Fear is the mind killer and
every fall is a hurdle in a race that I don't want to win.
Back to today....
So there you stand with your quadruple stitched hypertech earth
tone jacket with a label of supremacy. Those gangster funk mob
pants with built in accommodations for another. The fly ultra-
function beyond-breakage gloves and boots that would make any
java swell head done it before twice as big dude die for. You're so
fucking cool you tell the resorts the sick lines for the trail maps. The
snowboard companys hire spies that follow you with telescopes just
to get a glimpse of the shape of your board that you cut to make you
the ripper that you are. Shred hard hip guy, the flock is at your feet.

Public SK8 Park In Redding???? Not yet, but if Gabe Davidson has his
way, there will be soon.
The skate scene in Redding has been pretty dry since the YMCA shut
down their skatepark a few years ago. It seems that Redding is one
of those progressive cities that has made skateboarding illegal in the
city.
There is one ray of hope though. The YMCA donated all the ramps
(vert, mini & bowl) to Gabe and his crew, and all they need now is a
few grand to get things rolling. Well actually they need nine
thousand dollars. Ouch.
So, if you can help them out in any way, contact Gabe at 11873 Hard
Pan Lane, Redding, CA, 96003. (916)244-3409. They have a detailed
business plan they'll send you. They're also planning some benefit
shows and contests, so if you can help out with that, that'd be cool
too. Wishing you guys luck.....

Little People is not the name of a race of midgets, or a pre-school
either. It is however, the coolest snowboard zine that we've received
in the Heckler PO Box as of late. Published out of Bend, OR by Nick
Schuder and Kevin Porterfield with contributions by Quinn Shields,
Jim Graham and a host of Bend locals. Little People has everything
that makes a zine good: Attitude, attitude, and more attitude. Besides
that, they cover the Oregon snowboard scene pretty well with
profiles on riders and some stuff on riding the area. The layout and
writing are both cool. Kinda' sloppy, but intentionally so, sorta' artsy
and with plenty of soul. You should definitely check this one out if
you're in or are planning to be in the area. You might be able to get a
copy by calling Kevin at 503-317-1093

One More Late Zine Arrival: Merry Fraud #3
We got this one right before we went to press, so we didn't have
much of a chance to actually read it. It looks pretty cool with the
standard xerox and typewriter style layout. I think the attached
letter summed it up pretty well:
"I am a woman. My creative outlet in the middle of culture free Reno
is this zine. I put out about 300 of of each issue. I'd dig it if you'd
review it. I can't pay for an ad. This is a product of exploiting a mean
company's xerox w/out permission. " You might be able to get a copy
by writing to Benayshe-Ba-Equay, 12460 Creek Crest Drive, Reno, NV

Rumours have it that Heckler Staffer Matt Kennedy picked up a real
shiner at his X-mas party. In unrelated news, he recently bought
some boxing gloves for his girlfriend, Nicole.

Cardiel's birthday bash goes ballistic.
Last years broken jaw turns into this years bloodied face via the
Roach Bros. Alcohol induced horseplay goes crazy.

Palmer's Sponsor supported plush van to hold his motorcycles was
recently stolen from his driveway in South Lake Tahoe. He was in
L.A. at the time and due to the stupidity of the S.L.T. police force he
couldn't file a report over the phone, so he had his buddies try, no go.
When I called to get his Farmer intro (see page_), about a 2 weeks
after the van was stolen I asked did you write farmers thing? "Well I
started writing it.. I got to go get my van dude, it's in a field, buried
in snow. I got to get a fuckin' snowplow and plow a road through this
field to get it out. Besides this, is Palmer now the reigning king of
Racquetball in South Lake, if you are willing to put up anywhere
from $100.00 to $500.00 bucks Palmer will school you. In a game bet
that is.

REWARD!!!!
On Nov. 27th, some toughguy rammed his car through the new
Auburn Boards 'N Motion shop and ripped the store off. Now, Wendy
is hella cool and just recently opened her new, bigger shop and that
amounts to better service for those in the area. It only takes one
asshole to ruin it for many. Any information leading to the recovery
of product and/or the conviction of the thieves would remain
ANONYMOUS, APPRECIATED and be REWARDED! So let your
conscience take over and call (916) 888-7873.

Ride For Free...
If you wanna ride for free this year, you can hook up with the Alpine
Junior Skiers Ski Club to be a volunteer chaperone for weekly trips
up to Tahoe starting in January '95. Could look good on a resume.
Also, kids age 8 to 17 who ski or snowboard, this club is accepting
applications for membership, which includes many cool benefits. For
the 4-1-1, call Dave Ross @ (916) 368-6004.

Davis Police Support Teen-Age Drug Abuse
The Davis, California Law Enforcement Agency have just beefed up
their police department to include a Skateboard Taskforce
according to John Walton, owner of Room Nineteen (formerly the
Borderline) and Davis citizen skater. First, they outlawed skating
downtown. Now, there is no skating within 300 feet of any city
building, a $60.00 fine, board confiscated & court to get a board back
if caught. Even the teen center won't allow skating. The department
have hired 3 undercover cops and 2 bike cops to keep a watchful eye
out for the terrible crime of skating. This is fucking bullshit! This
reminds me of stories I've heard about the country Ghana, on the
continent of Africa, where police roam the streets to enforce curfews
and "proper" behavior. If you step out of line, you can be thrown in
jail or even shot! It may seem unrelated, but having police to outlaw
skating is ludicrous! These laws and punishments not only limit kids'
activities, it could very well have a harmful backlash. If kids can't
skate, they will find other ways to stimulate their young, thirsty
minds and it probably won't be birdwatching. As a matter of fact, it
could very well lead to more crime and more drug use. Please, Davis
citizens, parents and City Council, hire more police to stop real crime
like, oh, I don't know, maybe murder, rape and carjacking.
Skateboarding is not a crime!!!

And all this from a supposedly liberal college town. What Davis
needs is some real crime so those Birkenstock wearin', Volvo drivin',
granola crunchin' Davis folks can go back to testing drugs on animals
and leave the skaters alone....

Poetry Corner

Falls so slowly,
melts so fast,
kicking skiers
in the ass.

White, bleak, falls,
without a sound as
I'm standing on
the ground, shifting
moving over their
now I pulled a
method air.

Handed perfect, hit
the log rail slided
in the fog, I'm almost
to the bottom when
dam fucking skier
cuts across my path.
So I had to clip his
ass. He hit the
ground, as I point
my board straight
down. When I get to the
bottom the skier
said "I had a gun"
all I wanted to to
is have a little fun.
So I'm sitting in
jail and to my
delight someone passes
me a number and
I'm cool all night.
-Jason Cotter

FUCK OFF:

I hate those punks who ride the snow and say jib-bonk and dude,
they buy their clothes and rent their boards and are just fucking
rude.

They cut the lines, the runs the course, the pipe they'll even barge,
any chance to cut a skier young or old they'll charge.

From the chair he'll spit and yell at yard sales down below,
he thinks it's cool and it's alright 'cause someday he'll be pro.

But what the hell does pro mean punk? It means you ride for free,
you get free clothes, your face is know they see your on TV.

But pros are only "Gods" in 10% of the ski industry,
not that pro is bad, but is that all you want to be?

Fuck off you worthless skinny punks, get off my God damn hill!
To what you've done to the sport I love it makes me almost ill.

You take the line the whole pack does, you ride one chair all day,
you are missing backside powder, trees and hits so hey.

You call yourself a snowboarder, you've got the lingo down,
but we've been riding long before you or your terms were around.

Old school, new school, fuck all that, just ride the God damn snow,
don't barge the lines and cut me off, I don't care if you're pro.

Local riders at Boreal are as good as you, you know,
so don't get cockey, high and mighty, it's us who buy your shows.

Your attitudes can suck my ass, I'm sick of all this shit
have some couth or decency or off my mountain get!

You slide, you grab, you spin and clear the gaps, but so do I,
you have that sorry attitude, all I can ask is why?

Why getting good should make you stoked and happier than hell,
you turn to vicious punk ass pricks, I wish your boards you'd sell.

To all you sorry "jibbers" you can keep this in mind too,
there's a lot more of us soul surfers that ride the hill than you.

For those of us who ride the snow to set our spirits free,
these punks that come will also go, it's still our industry.

-Hilary Lewis
(Hilary says "I wrote this at the end of last season. I was angry. I'm
not angry anymore. I'm very happy! What a great season we're
having! I work at Excell Skates in Reno. Thanks.)

Blockbuster Video Reviews
Silverlake Life
This documentary film is about two people who love each other. One
of them dies of AIDS and was filmed doing so. This film should be
required viewing, but few people will have the courage or lack of
prejudice to do so. Be one of them.

Endless Summer II
The road trip surf movie continues. The cinematography is beyond
excellent and is all shot to film. There is yet to be a snow or sk8 film
that is filmed this beautifully. This movie is like a National
Geographic special filmed by Spike Jonze.
