I started x-country skiing about 2 years ago, and bought
Karhu metal-edged waxless with Alpina boots and NNN-BC
bindings. I ski mostly southern Sierra, almost never
on groomed trails, often backcountry. I have learned to
telemark a bit, but my Karhu's (sorry I don't have the
model number) are designed for backcountry/trail use, and
do not tend to 'float' like a true telemark ski. Anyway,
I have been thinking about getting a pair of telemark skis,
and would like to use my present NNN-BC Alpina boots (the
high-top ones with cinch straps), which seem adequate.
Does anyone have any experience with using the NNN-BC
binding with telemark skis? I have only seen 3-pin/cable
systems, but this would require a complete new set-up, and
I am too cheap to buy new skis, boots and bindings.
Thanks for your help.

definitely, if they are the new high top double boots, the other
alpina's probably won't easily drive a really fat ski.

unfortunately no, but i can tell you to check the binding for horizontal
play when the boot is not in the binding. this seems to vary on the
display models i've seen (the auto was actually more solid than the
manual, though some people claim that you should use the manual for
teleing).

I'm interested in this information also. I have seen quit a few
heavy duty NNN style boots, but it seems to me that the NNN
binding does not provide enough support for cranking tele turns.
I use the original RIVA cable bindings and find that they
provide plenty of support.
Thanks in advance!

My mate skis NNN-BC on Morotto teles and has no problem skiing along
with my Riva cable 75mm set up. He uses a half plastic/leather boot
which also comes in for its share of flack.. but loves them.
(they are on voile release plates.. )
In extreme conditions like head walls, he gets a bit crossed up..
but then who doesn't?? :-)
only the downhill/randonne set up really gives me an advantage over
him here.
ps. He is looking sideways at my T2s.. fortunately not his size.

I tried rentals with this sort of setup; the ski's were Black Widows,
don't remember the boots. They worked adequately in a groomed area
(but including some off trail skiing and bumps.) I did not like
having the ball of my foot off the ski, but if you are already
comfortable with telemarking on NNN-BC gear that shouldn't be a
problem for you.

I admit that I haven't skied an NNN-BC set-up. I have tried on the boots
and flexed them in the shops and this is exactly why I don't like the idea.
IMHO you can't make a strong tele turn unless the ball of the rear foot is
solidly on the ski. As a beginner I often had too much fore-aft separation
and did not get the ball of my foot down on the ski. This resulted in
several small quadriceps tears. The way the quads function (at least for
me) is different when I am on my tip toes rather than settled on the ball of
the foot. The latter position is just MUCH stronger, for me.

Having skied the Riva cable and Voile 3-pin cable with Merrell Supercomps
for three years, I'm finally switching over to the NNN-BC with Cabletrak.
The NNN-BC/Cabletrak system is lightweight, simple, elegant, etc. I seem
to be quicker edge-to-edge and the binding clearance is far greater.
Mike Miller, at "the Telemark Shop" (800) 221-0598, has tweaked the
standard Rottefella BC binding with a stiffer bumper and cable setup, and
it's bomber. Mike is the only one selling Cabletrak at this time, as far
as I know (it's his baby, after all...).
I've skied the system with a new pair of Alpina BC-5000's, and while
they're about half the weight of my old Supercomps (not to mention half
the price!), I don't feel that I'm sacrificing any control.
Check out the "Fat Skis" article in Chronicle de Couloir this month - they
tested boots with Mike's NNN-BC/Cabletrak system.

You have an interesting point. I can't bend them with my hands but they
bend on my feet. It might have been a problem to bend them in my early
days of telemarking. Now I get a lot of weight on the rear foot. They are
really super boots. It could be that the NNN-BC with cable, now coming on
the market will also be a very good system. A lot of us, like me, already
have a lot of $ invested in 75 mm stuff.
Are you at Cambridge? I was there in Sept. for a conference. What a
beautiful place! Denis
