Can anybody help?
I've seen a very interesting ski watch. It's called an
Avocet Ski Vertech (I think). It seems to be able to tell
the following;
Altitude
Temperature
Barometer
Runs skied
Descent rate
Total vertical
I'd like to get some more information on the watch. Unfortunately
I saw it in a shop window in Chamonix. The shop was closed and the
price was just what you'd expect in Chamonix, FF1000!
Can anybody let me know what the street price in the USA, Australia
or the UK is.
Many thanks in advance
Duncan
UK price is about 120 pounds I think (from Field and Trek
in Brentwood). Bet they are a lot cheaper in the USA :-(

This watch was mentioned many times in the rec.skiing.* newsgroups. I
never found a shop offering it.
Is it possible to mail order this Avacet watch?
Does anybody have the address and fax-no. of Avacet?

I think the cost is about $100 +
the watch cost approx. $120 US.....you can buy it through many
ski stores as well as bike shops....Bike Nashbar and Performance
sell it....
jesse
Anyway, the watch sells locally for about $120 (US) Several mail order
places carry it (like Bike Nashbar)

It is $120. Almost never discounted. A good place for non-US people
to buy it is from the BIKE-PRO bike store. They do a lot of
international bussiness selling bike parts and I had friends in
Germany that were quite happy with their service. They are on the net
at at http://www.bikepro.com/ and have a huge on-line buyer's guide.
The Vertech is described at
http://www.bikepro.com/products/computers/avocet.html
Below is their ordering info.
Hope this helps. - Andrei

I do not believe Avocet sells directly to the public.
The customer service number is 415-321-8501 (probably 9 am-5 pm Pacific Time).
Note that the company can be contacted via email at avoc...@aol.com
Colorado Cyclist, a US mail order company, carries the Vertech ALPIN, which is
the hiking version of the ski watch. It is US $130.00, and they will ship
overseas. Their phone is 719-591-4040, 8 am-5 pm Mountain time.
Note that I have given the standard toll numbers since I am not sure if
you can call the US 800 toll free numbers from Europe.
As a cyclist, I have been very happy with both companies service
(AVOCET is a US company that makes bicycle computers: mileage/speed/cadence).
Either should be able to tell you where to get the SKI version by mail.
The ALPIN watch has all the same functions as the SKI watch. Differences are
- the colors of the function buttons ( purple or red vs green),
- the wrist strap (buckle vs elastic band that slips over a parka sleeve)
- logo (a small hiking figure vs a small skiing figure)
- factory preset (comes in Alpine mode instead of Ski mode)
(in alpine/hiking mode, ascents or descents are measured at rates of feet per hour
while skiing is feet per minute. In both alpine and ski modes, you can measure
either descents or ascents).
One note: the watch has a two year warranty that is handled through the factory
in California. The battery is a standard lithium cell that lasts about 2 years.
For the current version of the watch, it needs to be replaced AT THE FACTORY.
At that time they replace the O-ring seals and recalibrate the watch. I tried
to do it myself, and the watch measurements were significantly (10%) off.
Future versions could have an auto-calibrate at reset, but you would still
have to worry about the seals.
Even though it was my fault, customer service had me return it and they sent
me a NEW watch (and didn't even cash the US $5.00 check I sent for repair fees).
Unfortunately the new watch fogged up during ski season due to a bad seal, so
I sent it back and got another NEW watch.
