Hi,

I recently bought the K2 Mod X after demoing several pairs of the
season's best rated skis. I took them out 4 times and only on nice,
groomed runs. The shovel cracked laterally within the base (there are
no scratches on the surface but you can see the inner core).
Thankfully, Princeton Ski shop is replacing them but they did not have
any in my size (181). Instead, they are giving me the K2 Axis which is,
supposedly, the 2002 Mod X. As far as I can tell, the only difference
is that the Axis' don't have the piezo electric dampening. The shape is
the same. Does anyone have experience with the Axis? Do they ski the
same as the Mod X?

Thanks.

I called K2 tech today. It turns out the Mod X was so popular they ran
out of stock. So they started shipping the Axis out to meet the demand.
The tech said the two skis are the same except for two differences. They
removed the piezo dampening from the Axis. They said it was redundant
with their core structure. Also, they moved the head board (I'm not sure
what this is) to correct the problem that I had (internal, laterally
cracked shovel). The tech said blind tests indicated the two skis ski
identically (they have the exact same shape down to the factory set,
edge bevel). I'll write in with my opinion after this weekend (I'm
headed up to Mt.Snow, VT).
